If somebody spray paints the text to a copyrighted poem on the side of a building, shouldn't the building owner be held responsible for copyright infringement?
If the building owner somehow made a lot of money from the poem then yes.
Huh? Article says: "Thousands of vehicles were bogged down Monday in a more than 100-kilometre (62-mile) traffic jam leading to Beijing that has lasted nine days"
Now maybe my reading comprehension sucks, but it sounds to me like there's 60+ miles of traffic and that traffic has been there for 9 days. I understand that a few cars join and other's leave, but it does sound like it's taking days to get through it.
Are you for real? You actually believe its the same cars stuck in there for 9 days and not just a traffic bottleneck being over reported? So later in the article when it says that "The congestion was expected to last into mid-September as the road project will not be finished until then" you actually think the same cars will be stuck in traffic until mid-september?
Damn straight. Heaven knows naming your UAVs something ominous is a sure sign of evil.
Sure is, evil in a big way. Evil like naming attack helicopters after an indigenous tribe they wiped out and stole their land from. Those wicked bastards.
Anyone else note that when ever someone in Iran farts in a slightly evil way its news international headlines. Clearly some precursor propaganda to the war we have no choice but to declare for reasons that haven't been invented properly yet (though the economic warfare has already been declared). All must quiver in fear of their little plastic remote control planes with a cheap web cam on the nose, these evil Persians that we placed in power after murdering and replacing their previously elected government must be stopped so we can take their natural reso.... er so we can feel good about stopping them because they were the baddies in some films a while ago. Hey didn't we do that something similar with the Taliban too? I'm sensing a theme here.
So we should also eliminate or create legal liability for all forms of psychological manipulation? Advertising and political speech come to mind, do we want to protect against that?
Your quoting me out of context there and ignoring a lot of what I said. Try watching some of the Youtube video's on people deleting their Warcraft characters, people who have lost their jobs, homes, wives and kids. I hardly think being manipulated into buying another cheesburger or diet pepsi is going to have a similar effect. At no point did I say that this lawsuit was a good idea, in fact I think its ridiculous. I do however think that as developers get better at nutruring addiction and creating ever more immersive worlds, it's going to develop into an increasingly serious problem that will need addressing at some point.
The fact that these games do use very morally dubious techniques to create a feeling of addiction and endless time sinks to nurture that addiction. There are a LOT of people who's lives have been utterly ruined by MMORPG's and its easy to laugh at them, point fingers and call them weak but the fact of the matter is they are being psychologically manipulated. The problem is only going to get worse as developers better perfect these techniques and create deeper levels of immersion. I would have to agree that at some point a line has to be drawn and lawsuits like this could become more common until someone could actually win one.
The world is vastly over populated. Yes if everybody on the planet each got a knife made out of recycled glass and used it carefully to murder a neighbour, then the whole problem would be halved over night.
Actually that's pretty reassuring to hear. Especially considering the recent media reports about drug price rises of up to 1000 percent over a couple of years (link posted elsewhere in this thread).
>The idea that doctors are routinely getting off their heads on "coke and hookers" at the drug company's expense has zero grounding in reality.
I did mention the coke and hookers were in after parties in hotels. I'm far more interested in the cash incentives for prescribing drugs smoothed over as payments for their time for showing up at seminars and presentations about the drugs. As to what the doctors particularly the junior doctors who are only just getting their hands on large amounts of disposable income do in the after parties is open to debate. Certainly at the junior doctors parties I've been at I have seen staggering levels of debauchery and drug taking. I'm sure it's very possible your family move in very different circles to the guys I've met but your implication that doctors, who have a very stressful occupation don't party hard because your immediate family do not is... well 'twaddle'.
But I am very interested to hear your opinion about these presentations. Do they happen? It's surely likely you or someone in your family has heard about them.
I wonder if Doctors over diagnose ADHD for the same reasons they over diagnose depression.
Friend of mine is Doctor working for the UK National Heath Service and he's told me about how they can be offered cash incentives for prescribing certain drugs, particularly antidepressants. Consequently you go to the doctor with any vague symptoms there is a good chance you will walk away with low dosage Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors(SSRI).
The cash incentives avoid being bribes in a cunning way. If a doctor prescribes enough of a certain pill he gets invited to conferences where they apparently give them more information about the drugs they prescribe. Of course this is out of work hours and the drug companies feel they should compensate the doctors for their time, usually cash in hand with jaw dropping amounts and somehow the after parties end up in hotels with coke and hookers. ''Prescribe our drug and you can come to the next party! ''
I wish I didn't believe him but first hand I went to the doctors with a headache and lethargy and walked away with a months worth of venlafaxine though I never took them after reading the side effects list. 3 years later I passed all the tests to join the Intelligence Core in the British Army but failed the medical because I had apparently previously been diagnosed with depression.
Hi RocketRabbit, pssst uh Steve is that you? You keep parking in my disabled parking spots! I will continue to remove your license plate every time you do that.
From what I had read, sorry I don't have a link to it ATM, but apparently most burglars agree the one truly effective deterrent that makes them go some place else, is a big dog.
The vast majority of young(ish) people nowadays wont watch a film if its black and white. I wonder if that will carry over into 3d eventually. To be honest I worry that I am getting old when I caught myself thinking that films were much better 10-20 years ago; Excessive and graphic violence, frequent swearing and most importantly little to no CGI. I don't care about 3d, colour etc, I just care that CGI has killed the vast majority of films its been used in, especially horrors. Imagine an Aliens remake, crap CGI, gravity defying cartoons strutting about while actors look vaguely in their direction. No thanks! Bring on the 3d if it will send shitty CGI back into computer games where it belongs, at least until most directors learn how to use it convincingly without needing a budget larger than the GDP of Belgium.
Does anyone else find it ironic that the loudest people who trumpet violence in the media as a source of inspiring violence in others tend to be religious groups and they are always calling for games and films that allegedly teach people aggression to be banned.
I would graciously accept the ban of all violent films, games, music and books if they would first pave the way by banning their own hatred and violence inducing holy book.
There is always people very quick to jump on the anti Chinese government bandwagon and perhaps with good reason, but that doesn't mean human rights or big-brother are reason behind every move. I've worked for an online games company and witnessed first hand some of the truly chilling things paedophiles say and try to get kids to do, some of it really chills your blood as you read it and such grooming attacks were uncommon but still far too frequent as getting prosecutions is very unlikely There are no doubt many reasons for this move and I suspect Gold Farming is very likely one of them.
Some estimates put the number of gold farmers working from China at almost a million and as it is illegal under Chinese law I suspect a big incentive would be to catch and fine these people (ie tax).
What is the issue here?
We automate lots of other work, why not this?
I'm looking forwards to when computers automate news readers and chat show hosts. A machine would probably make a more convincing human than most of todays plastic TV talent anyway. Bring on Max Headroom!
Most live bands these days just mime to studio recordings, the only difference here seems to be that the orchestras are actually being honest about it and not pretending.

Visual proof that there is not enough porn on the internet.

Doctor said he was giving me Venlafaxine and that was written on the box. What's the matter not specific enough for you?
You must be the guy that posts fake under every youtube video. It's nice to finally meet you.

I thought nationalized health care was supposed to eliminate greedy doctors working for profit? How can this be true?
I don't know about that, I do know that if the patient isn't directly at the receiving end of the medication bill the drug companies can get away with things like this http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1295610/NHS-doesnt-care-cost-medicine-Drugs-firms-accused-profiteering-raising-prices-ONE-THOUSAND-cent.html
As to whether the doctors receive kickbacks for prescribing these drugs is largely what I was trying to ask in my original post.

Who cares about a small iPad? I want a big iPhone, damnit.

while on the subject of rare Star Wars footage, check out Return of the Ewok,
I think a quote from the comments section of the video on YouTube sums it up nicely. Better than The Phantom Menace
I've actually heard in France people sometimes employ a Guard Goose or two.

What about when the CIA does it? And we call it "extraordinary rendition"?
You mean like that Iranian nuclear scientist who 'defected'?

What about pictures of drivers using their cellphones to take pictures of drivers using their cellphones to get first post on Slashdot?
You are allowed to use hands free phones while driving.
You are also allowed to use hands free cameras. http://gadgets.boingboing.net/handsfree.jpg
If you develop apps for the new iPhone, can I put in a request for an app that uses GPS to direct you towards the nearest public phone box.
Thanks.
