The most rewarding math class I took in college was called "Advanced Calculus" where we basically proved why everything in calculus works, start at a very low level. The thinking required for making proofs is very close to the thinking required for making algorithms...only much more defined. I'd highly recommend getting a background in writing mathematical proofs.

And I think everyone on the planet should take simple probability and estimation courses. People are really clueless when it comes to estimation. Like if I asked how many hairs are on your head...I don't expect the right number...but there are logical ways you could come within an order of magnitude or two. Just simple things like this are useful every day. Estimation is good just for a simple check if your numbers are even in the ballpark. Or just trying to judge how far away something is. People seem to think that a smart person is someone who knows everything..but its more a person who knows how to figure out anything...whether it be by looking in books or asking a friend for help.

Theres a well known community called etree where people list ftp servers and listings of what they have and rules for there server. Someone came up with the idea of trying it with just internet2 users, so i2shn was born. Obviously, the amount of content was kind of small on i2shn...but I guess ftp could be described as p2p. It was still cool and I support this effort. And if people wanted to keep i2 strictly for educational use, they wouldn't allow dorm computers to automatically route through i2. When you give any student at a college the ability to use i2...of course they're going to do whatever they want with it. I checked network graphs for i2 at my school...and we probably never used more than a fraction of 1% of the total resources it provided us. Wicked cool.

Since this has just turned into an RSI discussion, I thought I'd add another overlooked point. In my own personal experience, I feel more pain from using a mouse than a flat keyboard. Resting your wrist on the mousepad with your hand bent up and forward, over the mouse, is very bad. I think its the act of having your wrist bent awkwardly while using your fingers that leads to RSI. Gel mouse and keyboard rests shouldn't be used *while* typing/using the mouse, only to rest when you *aren't* doing that. I switched to a trackball from a mouse and I always try to keep my wrist straight (not bent) when using it, and its made a big difference (in addition to my kinesis keyboard). Figure I'd mention this, as the mouse often gets overlooked.

  14. Re:Couple this with Dvorak... on Keyboarding Love Or Keyboarding Pain · · Score: 2

I probably went a year without typing qwerty, once I started using dvorak. It took me a couple minutes to get used to qwerty again, but I can still type just as fast as I used to. Its kind of weird too....when I picked up dvorak, I started typing more correctly...ie, fingers on home row, using the correct fingers to hit the keys. When I go back to qwerty, I still use only about 2 fingers on each hand and fly all over the place just like I used to. Switching keyboards is a fun mental experiment.

For fun, try remapping caps lock to backspace and vice versa. That alone will screw you up for a while, but is worth it in the long run. (til you use another keyboard).

From the point of view of someone who hasn't read the books, I would agree too. Ok, so before you start telling me to shut up because I can't talk about adapting something that I haven't read, just listen. There were a lot of things about the movie I liked...it was really well made, but I thought the screenplay was the biggest fault. I felt like there was a *lot* that was being left out. For a 3-hour long movie, I expected better explanations of things and more character development, but I thought there was way too little. I wouldn't have cared if it won every award there...as long as it doesn't get best screenplay, and as a result of that, best picture, I was happy.

To everyone who has read the book....you have to imagine seeing this movie without all the extra knowledge you have. I was really disappointed. Everyone tells me that the movie is so much better if you have read the books...well, in my mind, that means the screenplay was severely lacking. And if the people who didn't vote for it haven't read the books, then thats just too bad for the screenplay writer. It should have been more universal.
