  1. Re:you may not believe this on Inventory Tracking & Purchasing · · Score: 1

Perhaps. The big trick is unifying the underlying calls. Nobody, not even I, wants to go to the command line and invoke grep, and other utilities to get basic work done. It all comes down to ease of use. A slick UI would probably be a good thing, but reliance on third party (in this case open source) utilities is not exactly safe. One small change to the utility that changes the way it calls or returns information can break the application. The only way around that would be to never update those utilities, but that would do away with security patches.

No, they just want their shit to work. They want to hit the power button on the computer and have it jut work. When they install a sofware package they just want to run the installer and have it ready to use in a few minutes instead of untaring a file, configuring, and making the software.

Yeah, Linux is superior to Windows, but untill it 'just works' even to the extent that windows software 'just works' then it'll still be just a tinkerers operating system. Nothing more than a hobbyists wet nightmare.

It's like any media. Ads support the media cost, and lower the cost to the end user. If magazines, for instance, did not have ads the magazine cost to the reader would be above what it is with ads. It's inevitable that ads get into video games in one form or another. Small claims court can be used. A subpeona is good from any court.

"He'll have to pay court fees and spend hours, if not days, on this and when he gets them, the police won't do a damn thing."

I always get the police to act even if they don't want to act. All I do is ask the officer(s) if the police department is abdicating it's responsibility in the matter, and if so, to put it in writing. If they abdicate then the responsibility falls on me, and then tell them to stay out of my way, and not interfere with me in pursuit and resolution of the matter. So far, I've had no takers, and the police do their job.

"If, by some small miracle, the police catch the perp, there is virtually no chance of getting any money from the perp and the bank has more lawyers than he does (and $2000 isn't much when you're talking legal fees)."

By doing nothing you do two things. You tell the criminal that it's ok to steal money from others, and you tall the other criminal (the bank) that it's ok to allow your money to be stolen.
