And that's just the CEO's office!

  4. Be a part of the solution! on RIAA Wants Taxpayer-Funded IP Police · · Score: 3, Funny

There's a future in music, at least we hope so, and much of that future will be online. If we are able to construct a new global marketplace dominated by legitimate businesses rather than pirates, we will be able to reach niche markets with unprecedented efficacy.

Well, why doesn't the RIAA focus its' efforts and resources on bringing about this marketplace instead of trying to prosecute the pirates!

  5. Things will change as we get older on Is Programming a Dead End Job? · · Score: 2

I've been programming for pay about 12 years now, and some of what Mr. Ganssle says is true: the pay doesn't increase as fast as a management or sales job does, and many managers will opt for hiring the young programmer, fresh with knowledge about the new technologies, as opposed to the old guy with his experience in COBOL and Assembly.

However, on the second point there is a solution for us aging programmers: stay knowledgeable on the new technologies! If you are a programmer who keeps up with the trends in technology, you are a much more valuable resource than the newbie fresh out of college! As the industry (and workers) get older, there will be companies that need programmers who know their way around the old systems AND who can program with the young guys too! If you keep your skills up-to-date, you should have no problems finding a great paying job!

Dead end job?? I think not.

  6. SOL if you have a 4000? on ReplayTV Switches To Subscription Model For New Unit · · Score: 0, Interesting

This new pricing model does not apply to SONICblue's current ReplayTV 4000 or to prior offerings, which will continue to include a lifetime service subscription. The ReplayTV 4000 line will end of life with the launch of the new ReplayTV 4500 series.

Hmm, doesn't that mean that your subscription would expire if you owned a ReplayTV 4000? Guess you'll be forced to get a 4500.

  8. This issue will never go away on The Culture of CD Burning · · Score: 2

It will continue with more and more people burning DVD's as well as CD's, as the technology progresses and hardware becomes cheaper. I don't see how the RIAA can stop people from burning CD's for their own personal use.

As for burning CD's and selling them, I think that is clearly illegal, but the same problem is how to curb that, while still allowing people to burn CD's for themselves (only).

  9. What about the robots? on Will Robots Cheer Up the Elderly? · · Score: 2

Who's gonna cheer up the robots? This is a bad idea, as it will only create a generation of maladjusted, angry robots. And we all know where that will lead us, eh?

  10. Streamlining=Different Game on Everquest Coming To the PS2 · · Score: 2

"It's going to work in a similar manner (to the PC game,) but its very much a streamlined interface and to a degree streamlined game play," he said. "We're making sure it's very easy to get into it and start doing things quickly."

IMO, this will cause the PS2 version to be different enough from the PC version so that it won't be as successful. Add to the fact that you will need a bunch of peripherals to chat for the game (can you say 'expensive'?), and this will drive away all but the really hardcore Everquest gamers.

  11. I doubt this will ever work... on Talk ... Without Speaking · · Score: 4, Interesting

Think about it, don't most people move the muscles in their mouths slightly different when they are mouthing words, as opposed to actually speaking them? I would venture that the technology wouldn't be able to discern the subleties in the way we speak.

Other than that, it sounds like an interesting technology.

  14. What about interoperability? on Microsoft's CLR - Providing a Break from HW Vendors? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Why does everyone have to see the evil in whatever MS does?? True, they have done some evil things in the past, but can't people see that the CLR is part of an effort to accelerate interoperability of software that we developers will be creating in the future, regardless of what language it's written in?

I'm tired of reading about how everything M$ does is evil...they are a corporation, and they have their best interests in mind, just like other corporations(i.e. Sun). Let's stop focusing on the negatives and start focusing on the positives, like the fact that MS and Sun have done alot to work together to further the standardizion of the SOAP protocol!

  15. RTS games are soooo boring! on Beta Sign-Ups for WarCraft III · · Score: 1

Seems to me that WC3 doesn't bring anything new to the RTS table for gameplay. Sure, there are new races, units, items, and a 3D world, but this has been done before(Starcraft). It won't be long before some 12 yr. old will have the game boiled down to the best race, units to build, and building order so that he will be unstoppable!

Can you say "bloodlusted-ogre attack, followed by a few death-and-decay spells"?

I'll stick with Baldur's Gate: at least that game has more challenges that last longer, making the game playable for longer!

  16. The real reason. on Is the Unix Community Worried About Worms? · · Score: 2

Microsoft systems are more susceptable to worms(IMHO) because the level of compter knowledge is way higher for Unix users that it is for Microsoft users. I mean this sincerely, and not just as flamebait.

Consider how many Unix users would actually just open their emails and run attachments blindly. I would venture that there are a ton more Microsoft users that actually do just that!

  19. Very Misleading Article on "Extreme" Programming · · Score: 2
This article is very misleading in that it implies that extreme programming will solve all the woes of programming in today's business world.

Hogwash, I say! Using XP will not solve the problems if the project is poorly managed, or there are no clear requirements. These are some of the problems that cause productivity to fall, not the method of programming!

While I think that XP can be beneficial, the article makes you think that solitary programming is inefficient and counterproductive by nature. This can't be farther from the truth! If a programmer is disciplined (and well-trained), they can be just as productive as the xp programmers. All this, and only charging one programmer's rate to the customer to boot!

A final thought: If you put two bad programmers together for xp, what assurances do you have that they will produce good code at all, not to mention more quickly than one good programmer? I can see it now:

Bad Programmer #1: I'm creating a global variable for the user's password, okay?

Bad Programmer #2: Sounds okay to me, we should also put all his personal info in global variables too!
