that I should google first but... I haven't had my quota for abuse today:
Has anyone done any cool hardware hacks to utlize a digital camera's LCD for other purposes? (thinking case mod, mp3 jukebox (like a real jukebox (friend's site), not an ipod) display.
my understanding that trying to use an old laptop's LCD (separate from the laptop) is near unpossible or not worth the effort...
*shrug* some sort of dimented light bulb went off when I saw the post...
As much as I like making my own homebrew alternatives to TiVo, and think competition is a good thing... UI-wise TiVo still has the lead (hopefully they won't blow it)
If it goes into effect (support the EFF, maybe the gov will come to its senses)... Stuff manufactured BEFORE the cutoff date (july 2005 IIRC) is exempt/grandfathered in. So start stockpiling PVR cards for Ebay profits after it goes into effect =(
(sorry for repeat/. ate most of my post) What is really needed in this space is a decoder card that also has a CableCARD slot. I don't care whether the CableCARD is inside the case or has an external slot, it doesn't really matter to me.
Here, Here! Once I was able to get to the 3rd page, I was dissapointed to see that it only supports unencrypted QAM... and if you are lucky enough to be on a cable company that has unencrypted QAM content, how long do you think THAT is gonna last...
I had my hopes up... now they are dashed...
The poster above nailed it... Looking for a PCI card that has a daughter card/slot/thingie for a CableCARD to legitimately (broadcast flag not withstanding in June 05)...
I'm pretty sure they have something like that in europe where you can slide your card into a Nexus-S and get your legitimate paid for Satellite signals... no such love in the US.
The only other way to go, for PC based HDTV digital signal chain that's NOT OTA DTV, is some sort of shennanigans using firewire port on the back of a HDTV reciever... but I haven't seen alot of that software out there (either legitimately or "underground")...

I'm still looking for more info, but I think most of the heavy lifting is done on the software side of this card (not that is an excuse for a lack of a linux driver)
but take that for what it is... (kinda like the old winmodems, sorta...)
Their mysql database just took wretched, so I couldn't get passed page 1... BUT if this is true it's a big boon for the homebrew HDTV, HTPC, PVR, DVR scene (enough acronyms for ya?).
I've got to get my hands on one of these stat!
Anyone who read the whole article know how they are doing the modulated QAM? Is it via CableCards?
if convergance is not desired.... why then do people mod x-boxes and add all sorts of cool functionality (like media centers, file shares, web browsers, etc etc etc)?
heh, I agree whole heartedly... unless there software is a knock out (in this case better than mythtv/freevo)...
I've built a comprable system for much cheaper. So the value must be in that it works out of the box, or the software is awesome... (I guess 1 out of 2 aint bad?)...
*shrug* maybe this is something more for the guys on MTV "Cribs"... i.e. "there's my x-box, playstation 2, and my Telly MC21000..."
doh! I can't believe they are using a software based encoder on an 800 dollar box... an oem hardware based encoder is really cheap, and can provide excellent quality, with lower CPU requirements.
I *ASSumed* they were using hardware encoding...
They might be asking a lot of that little VIA cpu.
But on most via m10k series mobo's, which I believe they are using here... you can EITHER have composite video out via the RCA jack OR SPDIF digital audio out. hence they used the term "optional" as they must set the jumper at the factory for you =)
regarding the cost of ownership... not sure what to tell you. The Telly MC2100 might not be the answer (if they'd even out their software a little from what I understand they could have a solid hight end boutique market, I guess)...
If you are happy with your cable company supplied DVR, enjoy! You are getting pvr/dvr functionality that makes TV viewing so much more enjoyable without a lot of upfront costs of TiVo or DIY... but other people like choices, and expandability, or tinker-ability...
>>>
For that much money, I'd rather build one myself.
+210$ for 250GB instead of 80GB +76$ for WiFi +60$ for a CD burner
ouch! >by Lord Kano How much is YOUR time worth?
Well, believe it or not some people LIKE putting together PC components, compiling kernels/drivers/etc, fiddling with software, soldering, etc... (note: soldering not usually required for a diy pvr project...)
This place is still news for nerds, right? I mean, if his or your time was worth *anything* would you really be posting here =)
The first generation TiVo was only like a 33mhz RISC processor... and it can encode and decode video fine because of dedicated hardware based encoder and decoder chip(s) (as opposed to doing it on the fly in software which would require more hefty cpu)
Same principle applies here.
Heck I've got a VIA 1ghz PVR sitting right next to me... I've got a hardware based encoder card (hauppauge 350 - which also has a hardware decoder) and has a marginal mpeg hardware decoder "accelerator" built in that helps the somewhat anemic processor playback DVD's, full screen high bit rate MPEGS without too much strain.
" "Offer a software package for sale that will run on any Windows-based PC. TiVo should leverage their name brand recognition and become a powerful software player."
If TiVo were to offer their software separately, why would I buy it, when I can go and get something like MythTV for free?"
besides the work in progress windows based mythTV client, myth isn't really available for windows...
Of course there is GBPVR which is windows and free as in beer.
Sage TV IMHO ( review ) is pretty close to usability as Tivo... and there's also SnapStream's Beyond TV... both are windows based commercial software PVR solutions which there ARE a market for.
So, in short even though YOU'd download knoppmyth or mythtv for free... others would be interested in TiVo on teh windoze platform... (or on linux for that matter).
Regardless of platform (win/linux) if tivo created a software package that installed as easily as the settop box... and was as easy to use it would be of interest to people on BOTH platforms... (even with knoppmyth/etc I don't think it's *quite* easy enough for "anyone" to install and configure... but it's certainly getting there)
IANH, (obviously) but I think he'd be more upset if someone ELSE was making money off re-distributing his stuff, as opposed to just not making additional money for the re-distribution... *shrug*
People tape and encode (& edit?) and push his stuff out to usenet IIRC...
I'm sure if eh could captialize on it he would, but if he saw someone using his content to sell crap on a site or soemthing he'd flip his lid.
But what do i know... baba booey baba booey bababooey... what do you think of stern's pen1s...eff artie *click*
Are you a series 1 or series 2 tivo owner (or satellite tivo)?
Once you do the hack to have it NOT encrypt the mpegs (some hex flag change) and if you have some sort of USB WiFi or etherent adapter plugged in you SHOULD be able to pull off your stuff much easier...
There's also the mechanical hack of pulling the drive and sneaker netting and using some tools to pull stuff off that way... I suppose
Note: My tivo is currently in a virgin state, I do my content retrieval/archival from my homebrew PVR (*gratuitious plug*) which is much easier (for me).
the DTA-111 card only uses software based encoding and decoding... yuck!
I can't tell, but I assume that card only supports OTA digital TV signals... which is the bane (to me) of all these PCI based Digital TV cards...
I'm thinking, since the content delivery companies are unlikely to sanction a PC based "decoder/unencrypter" of their QAM digital HDTV signal... that a Firewire "slaving" type solution is the way PC based media centers can get at the HDTV content on these set top boxes...
It can be both the transmission and the controlling aspect (like using a serial cable or ir blaster with a digitial cable box now, for example but also being a way to transfer the content)
I'm pretty sure this is just to keep Peter Venhkman and his rogue group from stealing Lady Liberty again... They are still cleaning pink goo out of her crevices.
Just because you have some claim in meatspace on some "name", it shouldn't (IMHO) necessarily carry over to the "virtual space" of domain names.
Although it's a different ball of wax see the recently posted (and resolved!) katie.com fiasco... or any of the suchandsuchSUCKS.com cases.
I'd be curious to exactly what was "Jerry Fallwell" was trademarked for/as in context...
Would using Jerry's name to criticize him fall under fair use/free speech?
Who says (besides wipo/icann bozo's) that you have an entitlement to an easily remembered domain name... with his name in it? First come first serve =)
