  13. Re:how looks matter on Jornada Killed, iPaq To Live On · · Score: 1

Not sure if this is sarcastic or not, but the iPAQ is only second-ugliest after the new Cassiopeia.

The Jornada was IMHO the best looking of the PPC2002 devices and will only be superceded by the upcoming LOOX in terms of sexiness ;-)

However, you're definitely right about how much looks matter. The iPAQ was just riddled with quality control problems and design flaws (no onboard memory expansion, no simultaneous button presses, dust under the screen, digitizer problems, etc.), but it won the PocketPC battle by a long shot merely because of hype and its 'sleek' silver color (though I personally think it looks like shite).

It's dissappointing to see the Jornada go the way of the dinosaurs because I will never consider an iPAQ after Compaq's history with quality control (not to mention the butt-ugly design). Hopefully another manufacturer will set up to the plate to replace it (Dell?) ... and PLEASE Microsoft, let them design their PocketPCs the way they want to - the limitations on button arrangement, screen type, etc. just stifles innovation and expansion.

Actually, both Doom and Quake are playable on PocketPCs. I've played Doom myself and that runs at 100%, but I hear Quake's still hovering around 10-12 fps which is too slow for me to even bother trying.

PocketPCs are miles ahead of Palm in the game department. The only problem is stupid MS's standards for the D-pad to be in the middle of the device. I'm sticking with my EM-500 until those restrictions are relaxed and another faster device comes out with the D-pad in the proper "gameboy layout".

  21. Re:Damn them.. and yet, cool. on Sega doing PalmOS Games · · Score: 1

Current PocketPCs run GB emulators just fine - in fact they run NES emulators just fine too (though I suppose the processing power is pretty similar).

I overclocked my EM-500 (from 150-180mhz) and that gave me full speed w/ sound on the best NES emulator.

I hear that Genesis/SNES runs around 10-12 fps right now (yes, there are emulators for them - along with Gameboy Advance), so that means that the X-Scale devices should be able to run those games full-speed since they'll be in the 300-400mhz range.

  22. Re:Big market? on Sega doing PalmOS Games · · Score: 1

No, there's not a big market - especially when you consider that you can get all of the "old school" games to run at 100% speed using popular free emulators.

I ... ahem ... know people that have had great success overclocking their PocketPCs and running all NES & Gameboy Color games at full speed with sound.

What amazes me is the Palm-centric slant of slashdot. Okay, so PocketPCs are Microsoft, but they can do so much more! At some point, your love of technology has to take over. I've been playing NES, Game Gear, & Game Boy Color games on my Cassiopeia EM-500 for over a year now (and you can snag one of these for just over $200 now).

Just wait 'till the X-Scale devices come out later this year and we'll be able to play SNES, Genesis & Gameboy Advance games at full speed.
