You could do a similar spot against Windows ME saying "Windows ME: why 2001 won't be like 2001."

Or a documentary type of commercial, showing how the multitasking technology was sat on by Microsoft for about ten years, anyhow. Squeezing as much profit out of as little technology gain as possible.

"Does your computer live up to your expectations? The role of MS in keeping technology down ..." Roll the film of all those companies that died, or were absorbed. Just the facts. All those technologies that never saw the light of day.

You know that someone is going to come along with a remake of the infamous Apple 1984 commercial, promoting a rebellion against the Beast. Maybe with a take on the old myths of hell, where all of the people think they are eating the finest grub, but instead are revealed to be eating ashes and slime from the Abyss. The number of Advertising campaigns that could be mocked up around this are amazing.

And irony of Ironies, they could even be paid for by IBM. I can even imagine a voice over that says something like "hey we thought we were evil. Then we met Microsoft, evil on a scale that is simply awe-inspiring." Or mock commercials with the Ferengi advertising for Microsoft .Net

Can someone explain to me *why* a developer would strip off copyright info

For it to make sense, you have to accept the idea that there may be people who seem to be part of your community, but are not, because they do not share your sense of ethics and fairplay.

If you have a couple of newbie developers who want to show off their programming skilz and want to short cut the process of doing the work themselves. Then it is easy to cut'n'paste and hope you don't get caught.

In this case, because of the conscious choice that has to be made when you select to do a cut'n'paste, you have to assume a conscious choice was made to omit the copyright data. You certainly would not want an unconscious choice being made.

The response to this by the original author is very generous, he just needs his work properly credited.

But honestly, all the other work of those developers is now under suspicion. It will have to be gone over to make sure they didn't do this someplace else. This is a real drag for RedHat, and the crew that has to go pick through the work. These guys also have to develop a sense of ethics and fairplay.

Maybe they have a future at MS... [joke!]

There was that article on F**cked Company and here on Slash about the guy who sent out the memo detailing his rage at people who were only putting in 40 hrs a week on the job. (can't find the link quickly, but I remember it)

How many weeks can you run at 80+ hourd a week before you start to burn out? even if you have been sold on that dream of the company going big?

Reminds me of one gal I know who was hired at a company at big bucks, and went max out for the first month or so. When she cut back to more human levels of effort, people had gotten used to her level of production, and had started to depend on it. This was not a good thing.

So some companies can also get used to people producing at maxed out levels of production. This is not a good thing.

So I can understand people making the justifications they do. But it was sort of a trap of the spirit, baited with greed. Once you are in the trap, it is hard to find a way out, even if you wanted to.

For example, because of all of the companies that had all their key people located in one place at the trade center, and the resulting loss of people and their knowledge, many businesses are probably looking more at how to decentralize to reduce the risk.

There is also the now probable recession, just given the drop in business for the travel and entertainment industries. So many businesses are likely cutting back.

How does this effect Microsoft? Many businesses have reasons, now more than ever, to NOT go through with the Microsoft upgrade program.

And then, there will be the cost efficiency of Linux. Businesses will add up the costs, recognise that the FUD about reducing the cost of business with Microsoft is in fact a financial trap.

Microsoft, if it is smart, may change their policy to extend or eliminate their deadline.

The business enviromnent may have become the wrong time to do a major product launch.
