    Two different elevators guy. One on mars and another on earth. For lauching payloads from both planets. We are going to eventually have to travel home from mars....

    What functionality does a PDA offer that makes it worth the price tag to someone who is making something in the neighborhood of 20k a year?

    Money is relative I guess, but I use either a Palm or iPaq for my keeping track of my gym workouts. Yes, it's a little geeky, but I find that it works far better than paper for estimating goals and graphing history of bodyfat, weight lifted, reps, etc. They also make great places to hold grocery lists and generic shopping lists around holidays and birthdays.

    Yeah, I know paper works wonderfully for that. But lets face it, for 99% of the world (me included) they are toys that you buy with disposable income. At 20K, you don't have any discretionary income if you live in first world....

    I thought that you only had to proctect a trademark, not a patent? As far as I know, from a legal point of view, you can just sit on something for a while. It's definitely slimy and I'm sure that any reasonable judge would look unfavorably, but I *think* it is legal. Comments?

    You're making an assumption that because he said Intel, he means Windows. What if he runs Linux on it?

    I'm not sure that I notice much of a difference from a developers point of view between OSX and Linux. Having said that, you'll get my powerbook when you pry it from my cold, dead hands. The desktop is superior (in my opinion) and it's nice to be able to run Quicken, Warcraft, etc without having to have another computer.

    In my opion i haven't noticed much of a difference in speeds during my compiles, but then again, i generally don't sit there staring at it either. I multi-task on writing the documentation or catching up on mail....

    Hardly. If you look at the year graph, it's still outstanding. It took a similar dip in August before climbing to dizzying new heights. I don't think SCO has much of a leg to stand on from a legal perspective, but the fact that remains anyone who bought at the last dip and was smart enough to sell a month doubled their money. Not a bad ROI for 30 days.

    I applaud your sentiment, but I have to think of what the poster mentioned in his repsonse about old hardware. Let's face it, linux is a moving target. If the books are old to you, they're old to someone else as well. I realize that it's not exactly true, /bin/ls will always be /bin/ls, but hopefully you get my meaning. It souned they like were fairly current on being able to grab ISO's, etc. I would think the you'd be better off just donating your money and perhaps some of your time. Then again, if you were really intersted in helping and could spare $50, I'm sure they'd appreciate some new tech books as well...

    Unless we invent a new type of microchip, we're probably only going to kick ass in countries without access to EMP technology.

    Oh, but note the drop in revenue from I to II. To me, ~$120M is a lot of money.

    If i recall correctly, Ep II wasn't released in the same number of theaters as Ep I. I think it was a combination of the DLP requirements and the licensing requirements that it be shown on the largest screen, in the best theater, for a minimum number of weeks. This was different than the reqs for Ep I which ended up having a much wider release.

    Personally I thought it was a good movie, but then again, I thought Ep I did a good job setting the stage for the next five movies as well....

    I'm glad someone else mentioned this. I'm not sure how you can complain about rising corporate costs when you regularly fly employees between Texas and the valley on private planes.

    At what point does a stockholder sue them for negligence in managing the company finances? I understand that sometimes you simply have to meet face to face, but what are the costs involved in actually keeping corporate jets versus flying business class or even, shudder, first class?

    agree, $250 for the new iPod is too much, considering a new 15GB Dell DJ is the same price, and has a much longer battery life.

    If I heard everything correctly (the damn video stream kept crapping out), Steve didn't mention anything about battery life; so aren't you making an assumption there? Also, he mentioned they were targetting the 'flash player' market, but I guess we're all assuming this is drive based, since 4GB of flash memory alone would be over $250?

    I remember seeing something about it's location being in a migratory flight path and other wind projects did not have the same problem.

    Total here is over 600,000. These services tend to run about $10 per month, yielding a total revenue of over $6 million per month across all services. iTunes has sold 20 million songs in 7 months, or less than $3 million in revenue. Profit margins on subscriptions are higher as well.

    This is a little apples to oranges (hah hah) and you are strictly comparing song revenue, but repeat after me "Apple is a hardware company. Apple is a hardware company."

    iTunes exists to sell iPods. What's the profit margin like when you factor those in?

    The question you should be asking is why are they still in office?

    I realize that people all over the world are having a chuckle at the recent elections here in Cali. However, if you think about the process (not the 2000 idiots that signed up), we had a governor that we weren't happy with and we basically ousted him. With all the flap over WMD in Iraq and the apparent vast hordes of people unhappy with the current administration, I'm surprised no one is trying to get the president recalled. If this were to happen more often, officials actually might realize that they are in danger at any point in time of being axed, just like the rest of the working world.

    Of course it's not quite that simple and the results remain to be see here in California, but the actual process of getting someone "unelected" is kinda cool.

    It's a bit of a smack in the face to the rest of the world though. Play by the rules, stay legitmate, get shafted (price-wise). Pirate to your heart's content, get discounts. Nice.

    It worked for music. Thanks to Napster and other P2P systems, I can legally get virtually all of the music I'm interested in for $.99/song or $9.99/album at iTunes. Beats the old days of Record & Tape Traders, Waxie Maxies, and the incredibly price-bloated Tower Records.

    That's probably why Cornell's Fedora Project uses a hat as a logo and why Redhat chose Fedora as a project name.

    I've been paying less attention to linux over the past few months since I've moved on to OS X, but I believe that RedHat didn't exactly choose the Fedora name. Warren had been using fedora for his apt-rpm repository for a while and when RedHat merged their desktop distro with his stuff, they simply kept the name. It doesn't really change anything, but I'm not really familiar with trademark law.

    I was just wondering how sure you were. I happen to watch Howard Stern on E!. Yeah, yeah, he's a loser, but at times, a funny loser. They bleep or obscure quite a bit. I always wondered why? It shouldn't the the audience or advertisers, after all what else do you expect on Stern? I just assumed they were afraid of running afoul of various FCC limitations.

    I haven't read the artcile and I don't user napster because i am quite happy with iTunes. I think the key word in your comment is "bought". Sounds more like a damn rental to me. You are basically leasing the music....

    I happen to agree with you that very few people are going to be interested in renting a song.

    IE requires you to have Windows.(They're dropping their Mac port.)

    That's not exactly true.

    They are no longer developing IE6 for OSX, but you will still be able to get IE5 for OSX 10.2.X (haven't checked panther yet). According the MS FAQ it will continue to be supported for a while at least.

    As much as I dislike Microsoft, I appreciate this gesture, because as cool as Safari, Mozilla, etc are, I find that some sites (Bank of America) just work better with IE, no matter how many emails I send them requesting a browser neutral site.
