"With piracy resulting in only 4% loss, why are the studios making such a big deal?"
In fairness to the studios, 4% is a lot. The industry average for shrink (basically theft) in retail is about 1.5%. And how many Loss Prevention detectives are employed these days?
I don't know the true stories behind the movie Quiz Show, but anyone else remember how the contestants who were given the answers all along were made to take a dive on an easy question? This seems fairly similar I hate to say it. Fed Ex is clearly a blue collar job, not white collar. Certainly anyone whos won that many times on Jeopardy would know the difference.
I work in retail and the store I work for also denys returns at the store level. But this is only done when we are positive that the item was stolen. Denying returns to someone who is just the annoying "I'll try it on at home" type is just incredibly bad customer service.
This sounds an awful lot like Kast/Konspire2b. Basically, "channel" owners broadcast out a file (of any type) to others who in turn broadcast it to others and so on. Everything posted to a channel is downloaded by a subscriber to that channel (provided they are online). Sadly this fairly novel project seems to have died off, much like the original Konspire, which was also fairly novel.
I don't know if the reviewer got a different version of kitten than I did, but my kitten could stink up the house like a fat man just back from a chili cookoff.
I was a Nader supporter in 2000, and will likely be voting for you this time around. (In no small part because Nader will not be on the ballot in Massachusetts.) One criticism I've heard from Nader supporters, who are also Greens is that you aren't running to win this election. Certainly, I'm not crazy enough to think that either you or Nader can possibly win this time around, but Nader supporters have a some good points.
Nader is actively campaigning in all states, including the swing states and he doesn't shy away from swinging at Kerry, who he is also running against. You often seem to only be running against Bush, and offer little of the needed criticism of Kerry. Your reluctence to campaign in swing states, though admirably in some ways, leaves many would be supporters with a bad taste in their mouths. Are you at all concerned about alienating your base through what many see as a half-hearted campaign?
I'm not going to pretend to be a fan of Doohan's or even of Star Trek in general. I am however a fan of the movie Trekkies. Although I spent most of the movie laughing and the incredibly obsessive fans (something tells me that a few you/.ers were in the movie), that are lame enough to speak Klingon, Doohan is actually the most memorable person in that movie to me. The story he told about that woman whom he apparently helped through some difficult times was a rather emotional experience, not only for him (if memory serves his eyes were full of tears while recounting it), but for me as well.
I have absolutely no idea about whether or not he deserves the star. Whats far more important to me, is that from the little tiny bit I know about him, he seems to be a decent person. I would rather be remembered as a good human being than have a dozen stars or the admiration of a bunch of dorks. Looks like he got both, so bonus points for him!
Not to inject some seriousness into this conversation, but why doesn't the Mozilla Foundation release something like this for real? They could set up an account with Google and then get paid for all those clicks on targeted ads. And I know what you're thinking, what kind of an idiot would voluntarily install such a monstrosity as an adbar. But c'mon. You know theres plenty of Google/Mozilla Fanboys out there that would be perfectly willing to whore a couple of pixels out to the Foundation!
If an evil corporation is trying to have its way with you, just enlist the assistance of hundreds of thousands of net nerds with nothing better to do (i.e./.) then to harass them, and within 48 hours you will have what a dozen lawyers couldn't have done in 4 years!
... to fuck things up worse. Just what we need, more of the spectrum, and everyones ears, to be invaded by shouts of "WAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSAAAAAAAAAAAAPPPPPPPPPPPPPP PPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!," "Yo bitch where you at?!" not to mention the ever popular "What are you wearing?"
Congress doesn't just need to stop this deal, it needs to outlaw two-ways all together. And while its at it, how bout banning the FCC?
Look, not to sound unsympathetic, but if this is the biggest problem you have with your employer then you geeks have it easy. There are millions of people whose employers won't pay for a cell phone or a dsl line. In fact, these same people also don't get blackberries. Come to think of it, they also don't get paid vacation or health care, or even a living wage.
I feel about as much sympathy for you, as I do for Mr. Burns.
Prehaps we all need to standardize on a fake name? Sure, it exposes us easier to being identified as having given a phony name, but the civil disobiedience effect can not be denied.
I propose Emmanuel Goldstein become our chosen name. Imagine 10,000 arrests filed each month against Emmanuel Goldstein for refusing to give an ID. Seems almost too appropriate to me.
Now, I haven't read the decision, and of course IANAL, but it seems to me that all the supremes did today was uphold the constitutionality of a Nevada statute. This doesn't necessarily make it the law of the land. Another state could pass a law forbidding police from arresting people simply for refusing to provide ID (or tell their name, whatever). Any real lawyers out there who have a clue?
From the article: "You can not only feel the resulting force, but you can also get a sense of the quality of the object you're feeling -- whether it's soft or hard, wood-like or fleshy."
Judging from that quote, it must be a researchers penis.
Very interesting. I'm using K-Meleon, a Mozilla based Win32 browser. Using the default ID string I get that message that everyone else seems to be getting. I identify my self as using IE 6.0 (or 5.5 or 4.0) and the page renders, albeit with a ridiculously small font that is completly unreadable. If I identify as Netscape 6.1 or 4.76 it renders quite nicely. Unusual... yes?
That takes some serious balls to do on the day you release a new version of an OS that is heavily criticized for being anti-competitive.
Peter Jennings just reported on ABC news television that some survivors have indeed been pulled from the rubble! This supposedly comes from the Mayor. Lets keep pulling them out!
Lawyers say the settlement could cost Apple as much as $15m.
Though I'm sure their take will be somewhat smaller than that. Roughly $14.9m for the lawyers sounds about right.

Or maybe he really is just human after all.
Anyone else suspicious about anything regarding evolution that comes out of South Carolina?
Well then I guess this link to Google News is pretty useless too, eh?
Guess I'm part of the 26% who don't give a fuck.

Thank you for answering our questions David.

So much for Coral ending the slashdot effect. I'm just getting a 408 timeout error

That and turkey! Lotsa turkey coming my way!

How about SDL? I know its a bit simplistic, but it is rather cool and runs on an assload of platforms.
