    We have been looking for a Java Programmer for some time, and to alleviate the riff raff we typically give them a Java Test, and SQL Test. The SQL Test is more knowledge base with very little thinking and the Java test is mostly developing algorithms. The sad thing is a lot of the people come in asking for a starting salary twice as high as mine, and can't even pass my fscking test. Sad thing is no one has passed the test yet, so we haven't hired anyone...

    I would say this test is on par with a 2nd semester programming class midterm.

  13. Re:IE often HAS to be your browser of choice on Opera 6.03 - The Wild Child of Browsers? · · Score: 2
    haven't you noticed that web sites are becoming more and more standards compliant? if you keep scripting for an IE only audience, then soon your web sites will be considered 'broken' and your employer (or customers) will be asking you why their website looks/acts screwy.

    Besides there is nothing worse in the world than writing in some form of clientscripting anything that resembles the following line
    ns6=(navigator.userAgent.indexOf("Gecko")!=-1)?tru e:false
    The evils of web development. Customers often ask for a lot to be done, that other browsers cannot provide, or if they can with a lot more hours coding to make them both compliant. Most coporate environments choose to use IE, therefore you make it a specification to develop for IE only. This does save time and money, especially when you are building weblications for their company Intranets that support various things like Remote Scripting.

    But here is where the evil-ness comes in. What happens when the sites become broken? Well the first question you ask the customer is well what browser are you using? If they answer something else other than what is listed in the specification, which often is a legal binding contract, then you don't have to support it and if you choose to support it you can make a couple extra bucks consulting. (The constant circular life cycle of web development)

    To sum the above in two words: Job Security.

    Not giving anything away, it is awesome. There are more lightsabers in this movie that you can shake a errr... lightsaber at. The problem I can forsee that people would have is the acceptance of Anakin being Anakin. Well nobody really liked the first kid so why should we like the second. They are probably going to be some complaints about this movie, but I didn't have any. AOTC definetly has the best land war of any of the Star Wars movies including EOB. Anyway great movie, I just wonder if it would be any better seeing it in one of the digital theatres.

    I'm not going to say Sun should open source Java, but for heaven's sake, make a GUI toolkit that doesn't suck. You can't cite Java's 'newness' as an excuse anymore.

    I love hearing this argument. Yeah Java's AWT is somewhat heavyweight. But it is old, it's been around since JDK 1.0. JDK 1.2 Swing still has a ways to go but has made some significant improvements. However the problem that people neglect is that these Windowing toolkits are cross platform. I guarantee that my Java applications will out perform your VB, with the exception on Win32, on every other platform. Java gives people choice of where you can run those applications.

    However with the advent of .NET and J2EE becoming a larger API, it really isn't going to be about windowing anymore. It's all about Web Services. What can you do networking. Programming VB Data Collection forms will still be important, but soon you will see more and more drag and drop collections similar to VB with Java IDE's. That is once Sun really starts standardizing reusable JavaBeans.

    Actually you bring up a good point and a lot of people seem to have already posted. I agree with you, it does some seem sweet, Web Services, XML Platform. However the compile once, run anywhere is limited to machines that are able to run the .NET CRI or CRL(Common Runtime Interface / Language) I can't remember which one it was. Instead of a Java VM interpreting the compiled Java Bytecode, .NET actually compiles your already compiled .NET code and optimizes it for that machine whether it's 2000, XP, or 9x. It's very interesting, however I don't forsee it being run anywhere unless M$ actually takes over the direction of the MONO project to keep it even with the development of the Win platform. Miguel Icaza and company will probably fail, for they are 6-12 months behind, and the gap will keep expanding until M$ helps out.
