.. yeah, telling them no would help my wife's disabled nephew no end. They find XP challenging enough - they are *not* ready for linux. I think you have possibly misread my frustration at gates and co as resentment that any member of my family would ask for help with their computer. I am loving the holidays with my wife and sons. Leading by example does work, and I heartily recommend that you try it sometime.
openbox, with pypanel and gkrellm works well for me. It's fast, pretty, configurable and robust. I prefer to start from a minimal WM and add just what I need to the menus rather than start with a load of stuff I don't. YMMV.
it's pretty cool. I can't wait (read "I will wait") until these things do H.264/AVC (MPEG-4 Part 10) instead of MPEG-2. H.264 uses about 40% of the bitrate to record video at the "same" quality, compared to MPEG-2. That will be killer.
Google is now too deeply embedded into most web users vocabulary to be knocked off the #1 spot. A little bit like M$ on the desktop of your average Joe. In the former case an excellent situation, in the latter, a very sad state of affairs. Swings and roudabouts I suppose.
it actually installs under wine on RH9 - at one point it displays a dialog along the lines of "you don't have IE and you don't have the correct windows something or other.." and gives a choice of pressing Yes or No. If you choose Yes, the installer exits, but if you choose No, the installer continues and offers you Typical or Custom !! Classic !!! Unfortunately, none of the exes do very much once started...
when I mentioned that in the UK you guys were paying for that 'privelege', well... I'll leave the reaction to that for your imagination
So who exactly is paying for the TV channels in Canada - The viewers, via increased costs of goods to pay for their advertising, or the viewers, via taxes paid to the state ?

The mustek cameras that do MPEG-4 ASP (~60% of MPEG-2 bitrate) have been out for a while, but only use SD/MMC storage (no microdrives..) - see http://www.mustek.de/eng_/html/produkte/dv5000.ht
- is this a record ?
.. what would you make ?

Wrong. In order to get the stream, you have to be using an approved broadband ISP. See http://www.bbc.co.uk/broadband/info/providers.shtm l
..couldn't resist ;o)
Huh ? The slashdot url tag managed the url !

It shouldn't have a trailing slash -
http://www.interact-tv.com/itvfaq/index.php?sid
As long as it's just encoding, it should be fine. MPEG-2 hardware version is on the way - see http://www.interact-tv.com/itvfaq/index.php?sid=92 60&aktion=artikel&rubrik=007&id=81&lang=en /
