I don't essentially think that the public is that stupid. That being said, I know they don't care. Why? Because I make frequent inqueries about the topic to people I meet in my job(University Library Technical Support). The users really don't care. I guess they know better than I do of what their rights are. Perhaps it's because noone they know has gone to prison(of paid fines) for breaking the EULA. They just don't care.

In the "article", it is made clear that Microsoft is watching what you are listening to. The advice given to the man for his situation was to connect to the Internet and the licenses for his music(which he already paid for... why does he need yet another license) will be updated.

Updated? How did they get the original and how would they know that your files are the right files, etc... because they are watching what you are listening to. Time to read that EULA Mr. End User. Problem is, most bloody end users really don't care. I've talked to many a person and they really think it's ok. I guess that means that I _can_ put that hidden camera in their daughter's bathroom Boy, I certainly hope noone takes that one literally. ;)

Keep in mind though that AOL/TW have control of nearly all cable. All CABLE. That is a whole lot of a very big market that they control. And a much more widely used market than computers, I might add. Let's not forget that for nearly every software product you install on your machine(in MS land) you get a bleeding AOL icon on your desktop...even if you already have the latest AOL! Creepy.

I believe the issue here is mainly that they will not be running on FreeSoftware, nor OpenSource software. Instead, they will be running on who knows what OS inside of IBM's proprietary DB. I think I would have a problem with that if I were trying to make a socio-political statement by writing FreeSoftware too. Case in point the current state of cvs -vs- bitkeeper use on Linux kernel development. It becomes less open when you _have_ to use the proprietary tools. It's not about wanting something for nothing, but about wanting everything for everyone! I can afford it, but someone else may not. That shouldn't keep innovations from occuring.

You can philosophize the rest of your life, but it won't change a damn thing. Nothing you or anyone can do, minus being the force of power(read money) will ever make a difference.

Compuserve, as it is, is not AOL. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of AOL/TimeWarner. The latest release of the AOL "browser" was reverted to IE. Why? Who knows. I'd love it if they used Gecko, but it doesn't seem that it was working as they had planned. As for Compuserve, they really wouldn't care if it tanked or not, so they just threw that client together in a haphazard manner. Not meaning to argue, but it's just the facts.

I can certainly understand. We haven't had any Apple laptops so I can't say anything about them. Mind you, we don't have nearly the expansive number of machines you do. Plus, I'm basing my experience on stuff I have built over the years and the "3 year rollover plan" that we have been working with Gateway on for several rollovers now. Once upon a time, we had Dells in here, but they were a total nightmare(Bios would reset it self/burn out for some reason). I guess you just get them in batches of bad... we had some Gateways that were very stable, and then the shipment after those were total trash. We've continued to use them mainly because management doesn't want to rock the boat... we have a campus-wide agreement with them. I'm in the Library, BTW... interestingly enough, we have our own Systems Group! Mainly what we have a problem with here is powersupplies, motherboards/daughterboards, nics, and harddrives. I know that sounds like a wide range, but since it happens so dang often, it starts to seem like the same thing over and over! ;)

    cheers!

It is more along the lines of good experience versus bad experience. I'll never buy a GM made vehicle again... they are total crap and terrible to work on... then again, Ford makes a moving death trap out of most of their vehicles. So, I'll pay more and get a VW.

I once thought as you did. I thought that getting into the politics of the situation would fix everything. The problem is that you have to be filthy rich to get not only into politics, but to get anything done in politics. Change is brought about historically by bloody revolutions by the poor or peaceful voting by the rich. Since the rich are rolling in it right now, I don't see that changing. And since you would be murdered if you were to raise a single finger in the name of revolution. You might as well do what I do... let it happen. If you really don't want to live with it. Kill yourself. I'm not trying to flame, seriously. If you have any control in of any aspect of your existance, it's when you die(given you choose to take your own life). The reason those in power are, is because the tides of life put them there. Millions of people strive to be in positions of power, however only a fraction of them get there. There is no coincidence. Just give up. You'll live a much happier life.
