Ever hear of a game called "Beyond Good and Evil"? I'm not saying the developers understood women. But the games main charecter was a strong willed woman who wasn't about sex appeal. It was also an amazing game. It's on all the 'current gen' systems (GC, PS2, XBox) and is not likely to cost more than 20 bucks. I think I saw it on PC, but I might be mistaken.
One NIC compared to another will barely ever harbor a difference, and internet hardware is constantly being upgraded with newer/faster equipment (hopefully). The way I see it, perhaps they could speed thing up a bit by cleaning up TCP/IP coding. This is doubtful. Another solution to lag would be a faster system than TCP/IP altogether, but I don't think 4 million would cover the marketing costs after development of a new software and hardware. And the speed of light isn't getting to be any faster.
The only viable solution... is all of them.
A NIC that produces "hyper-electrons" (patent pending). These "high energy electrons" move up to 80% faster than normal electrons. They also refuse to sit around in a "bit bucket." No sir, these bits are the firecrackers of bits. Not content to wait for a new assingment, they pass directly through hardware to thier destination. XYZ labs has figured out a "direct electron-spin" addressing system. Every access point on the new networks is assinged its own personal spin. The best part? Infinity is infinite, so you don't have to argue to include another couple extra bytes to the IP's if the networks grow too large! There's always another spin.
The new cards will be available in two flavors: P2P, and MMORPG.
It's not the games themselves that are expensive. It's the chassis that runs the bucks. Check out e-bay and you'll find the game boards for relatively cheap. You can even get multiple cart boards for old Atari games like you're thinking of. The Chassis can run upwards of 400 bucks (with the original images, but that can be painted too).
Honestly, you had a lot of good points. Why did you go and throw in political crap? It has nothing to do with the topic (in your context).
That being said: I would have done exactly as you did, except I most likely would not have allowed the store manager to make that phone call, or at the least delayed it. I think if a kid knows he's doing wrong and is still doing it out of spite, it's perfectly acceptable to swat him on the ass. The kid needs it. There is no other punishment that works. Heck, read the Bible and you'll find it written right in Proverbs. Pro 22:15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; the rod of correction shall drive it far from him. I'm obviously not saying you should hit your kid with a stick, but they ought to know that there is more in store for them if they do something like that.
I know a lot of parents who use it as almost a last resort. If their kids do something that they know is wrong (and not something like lying, but, oh say picking up little sis by the hair or slapping her) it's a good swat on the bare butt cheek and in the corner for a good half an hour. I also know thier kids, and they're rather well behaved and as I understand it, they may have recieved this punishment once or twice in thier lives. Enough to know thier parents aren't afraid to use it, enought to know they don't want to deal with it. That, and they're mostly good because the parents concentrate on praisning them when they're good, and always supplying attention, not just when they step out of line.
Exactly what I'm saying. The biggest effects are usually tempororary, unless there is a snap, like in another of the resposes to the GP post (Taxi Driver). But there is always a residual effect. One could argue that the simplist representation of the effects I spoke of is a balancing effect. Good for bad... unfortunately, even if you're reading a Bible, there's lines to be drawn and redrawn every day. So it's more like a 3D mapping of good/bad that is often changing. I would be in slight support of a theory like that.
I also agree about the kids messing around. At younger ages, boys especially, just fight with each other, like wolves. It's a race to see who can get on top and become the victor, but there is rarely any case where a child is inclined to purposely harm another. Except where he/she has learned to be violent (or selfish, manifested through violence). So many factors, it makes the head spin.
"What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music? "
More wisdom in that than John Cusack may be aware of.
Same princeple in videogames and music. Kids assimilate their surroundings. If it's violent (even the media presented), they tend towards violence. But perhaps they have influences in the opposite direction (parents, friends, teachers...). When I was a kid, my mother took us to see the Ninja Turltles movie. I may have been ten years old. I was pretty well aware of the difference between right and wrong. But I was still ninja-kicking with my older brother and fighting with other kids pretending that I was Raphael. I see this stuff all the time with kids. Most of them know it's not okay to ninja kick people for no reason, but now the disire is there... at least for the time being.
you bastard... I want my both copies of Fire Embelem back. I have unfinished business. And I never got to finish Castlevania to 100%! Poor Soma didn't get all the souls... be good to him...
Seriously, though. This is what a launch should look like in true form. And it's about time people lined up for one of Nintendo's products. They haven't seen a hardware launch like this... ever. I mean, the DS sold out in a lot of stores, but it took a couple of weeks in most cases. Now it's got the games. I can't wait for the new one to come out so I can replace my old DS which was stolen last summer...
I imagine it would be a safety concern. "Hello, we're in the orchestra hall and there are men with guns who are taking everyone's money." or perhaps "Yes, I'm in Office # 511 and the fire is keeping me from escaping and there's no fire escape." The thinking here is the workplace deciding to just take away your ability to make cell phone calls, rather than make a request.
Of course, I wouldn't mind painting a teenager's car with this stuff to prevent inatentive driving. Seeing as studies have shown that in any environment, teenagers (even up to 21 years old) get into over 2 times the accidents (20% more likely to be fatal) than any other age group. Add in the cell phone and the numbers double. Here in MN a law was passed that makes it illegal to talk on your cell if you're under 18.
I think imparing a person's ability to contact emergency services is illeagle. Unless they are in protective custody (as the holder of the custody should be able to contact emergency services).
We'd rather the Duke of Nukem' was Eidos' comeback. Lara has stared in too many crappy games over the last 10 years or so. The Duke always delivers. (even in "A Time to Kill").
gee. how handy that you can buy all those nice accessories from the same guys who brought you the review...Almost exclusivly if too, if you live in the US, you have to import, for now. I can't even find "Coming Soon" articles on EBGames or Best Buys sights.
By that logic I will do some unessesary math. I pay for three months at a time at about 42 bucks. 42$/90days = 46.6667$/day. 46.6667$/day * 1day/24hrs = 1.9444 cents/hr.
So, I'm losing just under 2 pennies every hour I don't play WoW. While this is an underwhelming number, it does pose a point about any subsription service. You're paying for unlimited access across a period of time. You signed a contract with Blizzard, or some other company for this (could be a music subscription). I'd like a contract that says I only pay 2 cents an hour (more than my current contract, mind you). That would bring my WoW bill to a stagering 64cents a month at max. Some months would only be about 10 or 20 cents.
.. that about 400 people are constantly waiting in line bespeaks that yes, the game is worth it. To them, at least. Not to me. It the queue is longer than a few minutes I'm not going to wait around. I'll load up Civ IV. It's perfectly capable wasting a few hours.
Although, it does suck that servers are filling up as soon as they're created, during the times I play, I don't seem to have too many queue problems... save for Saturdays, but I almost never get a chance to play on Saturdays anyway.
Can't read the article at work, but wouldn't RE4 be considered just a port of a game that already won most of those "awards" last year? Even giving it a nomination for Art/Visual would be a little generous. The only reason it's acceptable is because during the transfer from GCN to PS2 it was difficult to achieve similar graphics.
Oh, and God of War wasn't that good. It's just like playing Devil May Cry 1-25, only you don't get a choice of weapons. Hey, a brawler is a brawler. And it doesn't get much better for brawlers than Final Fight on NEO GEO.
Although it'd be nice if Bandai's would finish and release Cowboy Bebop. Gametrailers says it's coming out on 3/1/06, but seeing as nobody else is confirming that, I don't know how long it's been since there has been an update. Anyone?
Remember doing the long jump? We fat kids would slap the pad back and forth and then just take our hands off it expecting to sail into infinity. Well, Nintendo is more clever then a few 9 year olds. If you were in the 'air' for more than a couple seconds, your guy would trip and the jump wouldn't count. Still, at least our arms got a good workout.

Couldn't come up with a better name for vaporware than that, could you? Perhaps "Duke Nukem: Forever?"
Game's been in dev for years. It's had two or three release dates that were pushed back to "when it's finished." Now cancelled on the GC (which pisses me off). I know there is about an infinite chance better of this game making it into my hands that the Duke's, but delays are delays.
The PSP game won't be a direct port of the original - instead it'll feature all-new characters and stages.
When is the PSP going to get another non-sequel/port? Now, given that the US never got the original, I guess this game could be considered the second 'original' PSP game. Still... Lumines is the only game I enjoy on the PSP right now.
I agree with you that the gamecube controller is the most comfortable, but the Z is in a terrible spot. When I play 'z intensive' games, I use my index finger on Z and R is controlled by my middle, but this isn't as comfortable as you would think.
My other gripe is that the R and L buttons' pulls are too deep.
After playing Metroid (have pull R to lock on, L for free look, or the other way, doesn't matter) for a long time, I get some nice carpul tunel feeling digits. And I'd still rather use a gamecube controller to an XBox or XBox S. My whole hand hurts with extended play on those. Usually my throat too from yelling obscenities at the guy who just sniped me...
The other problem is the way the two sticks are set up essentially keeps them from being used as a strafe and aim combo for FPS's. The reason I mention this is for the Rev, you can use them, I'd imagine for all the past games. But for games like Turok, Goldeneye, and Perfect Dark, the C buttons were used to move, and A and B for reloading/weapon cycle. It's a long distance for a thumb if you have to switch weapons in combat.
Honestly, with any article that deals with PS vs XBox vx Nintendo is riddled with fanboys armed with mod points. Say anything mean (true or not) about one system and you're a troll or flamebait.
Just compare WoW to Ultima Online. Wow caps out at lvl 60. There's still a few things to do at that point. Like try to find a "Legendary" weapon (the orange ones are legendary IIRC). I've seen one of these.
I used to play UO with a few friends. I didn't play it because I enjoyed it. I played it because some of my friends lived too far away to visit for gaming sessions. I hated UO. I'd rather grind ten levels (from 40-50, not 1-11) on Wow than play UO. There was a "power hour" on UO where your skills grew 2x faster. It was the first hour logged on after 24 hours or more of being logged off. Even then I couldn't stand mining for ten minutes for a tenth of a percent of skill.
WoW is a breath of fresh air. You feel like you're getting somewhere. You decelerate in skills and exp as you go higher in level, but that's fine. I still feel like I'm getting somewhere when I play WoW.

On the other hand, gotta give Nintendo props for putting actual graphics on most of their box covers back in the NES days.
