    SPANKING THE MONKEY

    Transcript: Vice President Gore on
    CNN's 'Late Edition'
    March 9, 1999

CNN'S WOLF BLITZER: I want to get to some of the substance of domestic and international issues in a minute, but let's just wrap up a little bit of the politics right now.

Why should Democrats, looking at the Democratic nomination process, support you instead of Bill Bradley, a friend of yours, a former colleague in the Senate? What do you have to bring to this that he doesn't necessarily bring to this process?

AL GORE: Well, I'll be offering my vision when my campaign begins. And it will be comprehensive and sweeping. And I hope that it will be compelling enough to draw people toward it. I feel that it will be.

But it will emerge from my dialogue with the American people. I've traveled to every part of this country during the last six years. During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system.

During a quarter century of public service, including most of it long before I came into my current job, I have worked to try to improve the quality of life in our country and in our world. And what I've seen during that experience is an emerging future that's very exciting, about which I'm very optimistic, and toward which I want to lead.

By the way, although the press has debunked this stupid story about a million times, Republicans keep banging that tired old drum. Why? Because they cannot attack Gore's morality (he was never a pantyhound like George W.), or his policies (most Americans give Gore and the Democrats the edge on the issues). So they keep throwing lies around, hoping some will catch on. Some do. The world is full of stupid people.

CASE IN POINT: (I don't have to name names, do I?)

Subject: al gore and the internet

Sometimes I feel so all alone in the world.

According to Microsoft's very own reference resource, BOOKSHELF '96, Al Gore did pretty much invent the internet. We might assume that Microsoft would have a pretty good handle on that particular issue and would know what they're/it's talking about. Here's an excerpt from an article entitled, "The Internet: How did it originate?" (That's "ORIGINATE". Does something "originate" when it is "invented", dammit? So let's put this crap to rest forever. THROW IT AT THE PIGS!) The excerpt:

"In 1991, Vice President Al Gore, then a U.S. senator, proposed widening the architecture of NSFNET to include more K-12 schools, community colleges, and 2-year colleges. The resulting legislation expanded NSFNET and renamed it NREN (National Research and Educational Network). This bill also allowed businesses to purchase part of the network for commercial uses. The mass commercialization of today's Internet is the direct result of this legislation." (That is a verbatim, copied-and-pasted quote.)

I repeat for effect: "THE MASS COMMERCIALIZATION OF TODAY'S INTERNET IS THE DIRECT RESULT OF THIS LEGISLATION." Well, heck: it looks very much as if Al Gore invented in the Internet!

Of course, Bill Gates (Columbia and Funk & Wagnalls) doesn't know anythi

Well, what did you expect an USofAmerican to answer?

    War is their business.
    Its always been their business

Now, Im likely to be modded off topic or troll or something else altogether, but think for a moment. The USA has fought INNUMERABLE wars since its inception (does anyone dare to list them....?) and is #1 (by a very long long shot) in Arms Purchases* and Arms Exports.

    *
    2004 USA Arms budget: $401Billion
2004 "Potential Foes"(bad guys/evil ones/terrorists/tyrants/satan's warriors/communists/leftists/whatever/anti-capital ists/opponents-of-american-plutocratic-imperialism ): $130 Billion (Includes Russia, China, North Korea, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Libya, and Cuba)
2004 "Allies": $240 Billion (Includes the 18 countries of NATO other than the U.S.; also includes Japan)

So, USA spends almost equal amounts on ARMS as the rest of the world IN TOTAL....

In 1900's, when Wrights were building their planes, why *wouldnt* they think of war? While US of Americans like to believe they are peace-loving and fair "mind our own business" nation -- and are ALWAYS surprised when characterized otherwise -- are really a nation of War-Makers .... and have been for some time. Iraq and Afghanistan are *not* aborations, are not "special circumstance" but completely business as usual.... the Wrights knew it then, but were seemingly more honest about it.

What you can do is send forms, with send a form to a user like an email -- the 'form' appears in their inbox). This form, can do whatever you'd like. You can build work-chain dependant systems with them.

Now, I imagine you can do similar via HTML forms and a Apache backend, but ive used these outlook forms before to enable some 'officialdom' instead of attached emails and forms.... and they worked pretty nice. Really, how better to dedicate the resources of ones culture than the investigation of the cause/effect and remedy for general, shared problems? Why the hell not? I can think of no better things to investigate.

The masses are convinced -- almost without pause -- that spending money on single-serving yogurt-like snacks(ever *made* your own yogurt -- VERY VERY GOOD & EASY), RetiredBoxerBrand electric grills (whats wrong with your stove?), ZXY(TM) Brand $200 shoes, and blah blah blah is a good reward in exchange for my personal effort (the $ youve collected in exchange for work).. I say hogwash.

If Im going to sacrifice 40hrs of ever week, I damn well want something worth while in exchange for my Cached-Work($). Being the sucker in some capitalist's get-rich scheme, at the expense of the planet (pollution/waste/garbage) is not all that attractive -- but insead of paying for research like this (in taxes) people are usually DrivenByMindControl to buying SomeDamnedGarbage.

Where am i going with this? What is more useful? What is the greatest benefit of the product of our collective resources (the above mentioned consumer-garbage) **OR** some peace from the endless noise in a mechanized-industrial city....

I am willing to forgo buying some of that seemingly-benign-consumer-garbage in order to help pay researchers to think about something useful. Are you? Im betting most sane, normal people would agree. Instead of working to make Widgets (as I do), I wish there was a greater market for doing something WorthWhile. The Automobile that I contribute to manufacturing is not a goal I consider worthy of my time. I have no problem working, its the *goal* or product of my effort that is worthless. But, we live in a world with F'ed up priorities (we spend to much of our Cached-Work($) buying Useless Garbage, making the production of Useless Garbage a more common goal that most would like)

These kinds of 'decisions' and 'trade-offs' are taking place all the time (every thing you do has an impact on the world). Stop and think occasionally: "what benefit, at what cost is my decision having to bear on myself and my community? What responsibility do I accept or abandon that are the consequences of this decision? How can I make the world just a little better at Zero or No 'cost' to myself or my community?"

So, how far off topic is this?
