Many places won't accept checks unless your name and address are printed on the check. Kinda usless, I know. I write checks so infrequently that my bank has been bought out three times since my current batch was printed (BayBank -> Bank Boston -> Fleet -> (soon) Bank of America). I've also moved twice since then, but hey, if it makes them feel better...

Most corporations are already fascist. Sure the corp as an entity might be subject to the rule of a democratic country or whatever, but internally, from the point of view of an employee, you are the subject of a totalitarian, hierarchical organization.

Also communist societies don't necessarily have to be fascist - communism is an economic theory. Nazi Germany was fairly capitalistic, but that didn't make it democratic.

I have an svn setup on Linux with Apache authenticating against a Windows ActiveDirectory domain via mod_auth_ldap. Sure it requests the user/password via the basic http auth protocol, but you can swap in whatever backend authentication scheme you want as long as it has an Apache module written for it.

Also, I believe that svn supports client access certificates if you want to really lock down your repo.

Cell phones have become just another fashion accessory, and people will try to distinguish themselves using them.

That doesn't stop it from being annoying as hell though ;-)

I believe motherboard PCBs tend to have many layers, so the traces you see on the surface aren't the only ones connecting the components. It's possible that the surface solder is splashed over a whole mess of pads that terminate around the hole.

Civil disobediance means you break an unjust law in full view of the authorities, and potentially go to jail for it. The rest of society sees your plight, and hopefully becomes sympathetic to your cause. I don't really see this happenning with music downloading. Nobody is sitting outside the Whitehouse with a wireless laptop, downloading music, and getting arrested in front of the press.

It's one thing to get the crap kicked out of you by the police for sitting at the wrong end of the lunch counter, it's another to get slapped with a tort for violating copyright. The first paints a sympathetic picture in the press, the second does not.

I don't like the current system of music cartels anymore than anyone else here does, but I don't think blithely ignoring the laws is going to do much good, especially in parts of the world with a strong copyright regime. I think change really has to come from the ground up, because I don't see the RIAA getting hit with any serious ani-trust penalties anytime soon.

And I think things are changing a bit. I think indy labels are stronger and more popular than they were 10 years ago, thanks partly to online purchasing and freely downloadable MP3s. Maybe it means artists won't make huge bucks from their music, but very few do with the big labels anyway.
