Too bad, looks like the keyboard has promise.

No, VoIP does not work on dialup. This is why last mile needs to be implemented to all homes. The quality of the bandwidth going into your home needs to be improved, not VoIP itself.

I finally just bought them a new hard drive and decided that was worth it. I live 3 hours away from them, so it's kind of hard to convince your buddy who is already busy with people who are paying him, to go and fix my parents computer for free. Who is going to lead the way and what is going to become the turning point that linux becomes a usable desktop for the majority of users? I love linux, its configurability and the support that is available on the web, but I would never install linux on my grandmothers computer at home. Do you figure that linux should just pick a default window manager now and build upon that to allow a seamless interface from those coming from Windows XP to linux?

  22. Re:Linux won't take off whilst Windows is free. on SuSE 8.2 Announced · · Score: 1

I totally agree with you. I think that Microsoft basically gives away the OS for free if you are able to get it yourself, but cripples it enough that you can't do updates etc.. so that if you want to update it, then you need to purchase it. I'd almost like to see Microsoft go all the way and make it impossible to run the software with illegal copies. Or do what some of the games do and not allow you internet access without a legitamite key. That'd make a lot of people turn to Linux real quick.

Honestly, I've used a lot of Linux distro's, but never SuSE. This new 8.2 version has totally peaked my interest and I'm going to be interested to see how it runs and works. If it's as good as it sounds, then SuSE could become my new preferred desktop platform. My only fear is that it's slower than XP.

Sir, I take your challenge! I will be cancelling my phone service within' the next two weeks. I have already removed the phones from my house and plan on going totally internet communications. The reason for this is I'm a student. A poor student. And I can't afford another $30 - $40 a month. This is because of long distance charges which add up because everyone I talk to is long distance. I am in the process of switching the few people I talk to on a regular basis over to some sort of VoIP type situation, more than likely using Messenger. I am buying them all mics as that seems to be the biggest problem and installing the software for them. They all have broadband, I have broadband, and we are all paying for it. I might as well save some charges on local and long distance services by using a medium that I am ALREADY paying for.

That's what I'm thinking anyways. Maybe we'll see if it works out or not, but it'll be a good test to see how long I can go without using Ma Bell (I'm in Canada).

I've tried plugging it into the TV Tuner card on my computer, but it looks like hell.

Has anyone figured out how to do this clearly?

I have both the coax and the RCA adapters, and I've tried both, and the picture just looks terrible.

If I could get this going, I could be watching a DVD one of my 21" and playing XBox on the other 21" monitor. Good times.

  25. Re:don't give Microsoft the numbers on Xbox Media Player Contest · · Score: 3, Interesting

But THIS console, which does all I want it to do, ISN'T controlled by Microsoft. In the future, if I can't hack it, I won't buy it. Then the bottom end drops out and they are stuck. I think the hacking is what is putting the xbox in the living room. I like the look of the xbox way better in my living room, and it's basically a cheap computer I just bought, with the advantage of having games specifically made for it, and it's online. What more can I ask for, not much other than more network capable games that rock.

If you are TALKING about THIS xbox, then MS has no control, and I don't feel bad about using it. I am an avid linux fan, but damn this thing is slick.
