5 years from now I imagine you'll have a challenge trying to find a new standard cablebox that doesn't have TiVo-like features. I'm already there. The only HDTV box that my cable company supports has an integrated PVR.
You're right, and I was going to make the same point. But I guess it's fair to say that, in practice, internetworks aren't often referred to as "internets" any more, because of the inevitable confusion with the Internet. Anyway, I imagine most people who care about the difference would be able to figure it out from context.
I'll wallow with you. It's still on my hard drive...the directory's been copied over intact during every hard drive/machine upgrade I've done since the early 90's.

Who gives a crap if there are open wi-fi spots on the water?
Look, I just stopped wearing a wristwatch because my cell phone has a clock in it. Now you want me to stop wearing a cell phone because my wristwatch is going to have a phone in it. Make up your damn minds.
Here is a prime example of why we are all SubGenii. We all knew that SCO would tank. We had a golden opportunity to make some serious cash. And you know what? I'll betcha not a single person on all of Slashdot cashed in on these fools. Damn.
For me personally, it's about investment strategy. Getting rich quick is hard; getting rich slowly is relatively easy. Sure, I could have sold some of my investments and shorted SCOX, but that would have run contrary to the investment strategy that I've got in place to ensure that I eventually retire comfortably. I don't consider following a strategy like that to be unintelligent; call it instead prudent.
Man, I'd hate to be in the blimp industry. Give a dog a bad name, or what? One big accident almost seventy years ago and every time somebody suggests a blimp as a solution to anything, everybody assumes it's a fiery disaster waiting to happen. It's as if we'd all given up on ships after the Titanic.
Mercury's about as exciting as the moon. Venus is more interesting but trying to get anything to last more than a few hours on that planet is very difficult.
But I do agree that probes are a better bet than a space station, at least at this point. I'd just choose Jovian or Saturnian moons instead.
The great-niece of Kasner who was 4 years old at the time her uncle died says that although Google has brought attention to the name, it has not brought attention to Kasner's work.
Well, they've solved that problem. Instead of Kasner being unknown, he'll now be remembered as "that guy whose boneheaded family tried to sue Google".
Great. By posting those links, you've just skewed the results of THG's upcoming article...

It's not the straight IO bandwidth that'd worry me; it'd be the seeks. I'd almost want to assign each stream its own disk. Maybe two write streams per disk if you had to. If a disk ran out of space, or if there were a request to read from a disk currently assigned to a writing stream, then assign a new disk to the writing stream. Idle disks defragment. Interesting exercise in filesystem design.
I personally expect it to contain 4-8 drives. Possibly with even a raid5 setup.
I doubt it'd be RAID5. Too much overhead on the writes, and you don't need the redundancy. Although it would be cool to be able to hot-swap a failed drive out of your PVR:)
I'm guessing they're either striped, or just plain ol' separate drives sans array.
Comparisons between Lord of the Flies and BR are inevitable but not entirely justified. Without writing an essay, here's my point of view. Golding was writing about man's inherently primal nature and the conflict between it and civilized society. BR is satirical, contemporary social criticism that examines how youth deal with the rules that society forces upon them.
I'm hearing numbers like $20 billion being tossed around as the starting point for Google's valuation. I have to wonder, though, where this is coming from. Does Google really have the ability to grow fast enough to justify that kind of price? Based purely on current earnings, one might expect a couple of billion; allowing for significant growth, perhaps 4 or 5 billion. But 20? Are we just getting nostalgic?

The movie trailer doesn't reveal anything
/. readers who haven't read the book will be delighted to hear that.
Oh, good, no spoilers. The three or four
Depending on your space-sickness tolerance, it may be incontinental.

It's important for those who enjoy surf surfing.

The apostrophe isn't a mistake: it's "Coeur d'Alene" (it's French).
Not that that stops anyone from mangling the pronunciation. "Curdalane" seems to suffer from the same affliction as "Battinruge".

they tracked down and logged 30 - 40 of the sensors, before the FBI and Air Force raided one of them
Guess the feds haven't quite got the hang of that alien sensor technology yet.
Hindenburg, anyone?

...a new Exchange license designed to make this unattractive.

Damn, if only I hadn't spent all my money on that Star Destroyer...
You're trolling, but I'll bite.

Too easy.
Sounds like Kornfeld got his CCNA.

so they think anything that's user friendly must be vulnerable. A classic logic error, whose name I forget right now.
:-)
How about "familiarity breeds contempt"?
How about post hoc, ergo propter hoc?
How about "hasty generalization"?
