    As an HTML and ASP/JSP developer I know it would be extremely dumb if this is how the dynamic form is being encoded.

    Snooping on your employees is a terrible policy, even putting aside the obvious point that employees have less trust for employers who don't trust them.

    How much time do these managers spend on making sure the minions aren't doing anything non-work-related? Wouldn't the managers' time be better spent MANAGING?

    Not to mention that most Sys admins at schools are Minesweeper solitaire cert experts, who believe anything MS says.

    This situation could be assuaged if universities paid more than $35K/yr for a junior sysadmin position. Or worse, they hire workstudy students to do the work at $8/hr.

    You get what you pay for, especially in IT.

    How does open source (and by your inference, Linux) teach kids about how computers work? It's just software. And very complicated software at that.

    My public-school computer programming courses in grades 3-8 consisted mainly of writing rudimentary BASIC and LOGO programs on the school's room full of TRS-80's.

    That was as good and introduction as any, really.

    Umm... laser printers and inkjet printers are completely different.

    Just because it's acceptable to use refurbished toner carts doesn't mean that the same situation exists with ink cartridges.

    The downside is, when the 6-week project you farmed out to a team of developers in Russia is still incomplete after 12 weeks and you can't get them to respond to any of your attempts to contact you... suddenly $10/hr doesn't seem like such a bargain anymore.

    The AC (analog computer) is so large and advanced that its technicians have only the vaguest idea of how it operates.

    So it's kind of like a Microsoft operating system, is it?

    Makes sense that when the Universe blue-screens at the End of Time, you can just reboot it and the Universe will come back online (though you'll have lost all the work and have to start over)

    It startles me that anyone would wave their flag and cry "freedom of speech!" without the very simple understanding that the right to freedom of speech is NOT unlimited.

    You've heard of shouting "Fire!" in a crowded movie theater, right? If speech convinces people to behave unlawfully or with disregard for safety, it is not protected.

    The old joke about the manager in a hot air balloon and the technician on a mountaintop comes to mind, only in this case the manager is right.

    Your solution does nothing to solve the immediate problem, which is that existing CC validation software is now broken because the Mozilla developers have pulled a Microsoft on the HTTPS protocol and extended it with a non-standard behavior.

    Whether or not the the validation software is 'truly' secure or not is irrelevant to the point; the reason this particular system work with other browsers but not with Mozilla is because Mozilla's broken.

    If we're talking about the isolationist tendencies of American culture, then geographical factors have to be taken into consideration.

    The United States is bordered by only two other countries, and the culture of one of these is extremely similar to the US. If an American wants to visit another country, in almost every case he or she has to buy a pricey plane ticket, putting international travel out of the reach of the lower classes. Not that people typically have time to go on holiday anyway -- most Americans get 2 weeks or less of paid vacation per year.

    Contrast this with the situation in Europe, where many small nations are next to each other, and workers typically enjoy more vacation time. It's easier for a British citizen to visit Spain, France, Italy, and Germany than it is for an American to visit any one of those countries.

    This is all extremely off-topic to the state of Science education in the United States, though.

    I've known coders who were great at communicating and managers who were terrible. The skill sets between the two jobs are NOT mutually exclusive.
