  1. Just some rough number crunching on Rice University Says Middle-Class And Low-Income Students Won't Have To Pay Tuition (npr.org) · · Score: 0

They have $5.5 Billion, assume no interest income, a student costs $60K a year for 4 years to get a Bachelor's degree. Simple math states $60K*4 years* 4000 undergrads. That comes to a whopping $9.6 Billion cost. You can't count on interest income off that 5.5 bil because interest will go to zip when the market craps out like every democrat says. So, after 3 years were back to tax payers funding the students for free. Classic Socialism at its finest failure mode. I hope their idea works but it just so happens the guy typing this paid his own tuition.

Just wait for German style Socialism... must shut down nuke plants! Crap, we didn't realize we would run low on power, so lets buy coal generated electricity from another country! Well it sounded good at first, then nobody gave a crap. Don't forget to add in the govt. inspecting your house and finding that the roof insulation doesn't meet current code. 11. AI is overhyped, just like fuzzy was on Elon Musk Takes a Fatalistic View Toward AI (youtube.com) · · Score: 0

Companies are realizing that AI is a buzz word. They have tried to take decades old technology, for example industrial motor vibration sensing and transmitting. Of course, that info needs to be analyzed by software to estimate when the motor should be replaced before it fails and shuts down the line. That basic software has been in use for about 20 years as well, just simple fixed case statements based on the level of detected vibration. Where in the heck is AI buried in that simplistic model? Is it when it goes into the cloud and there is some code reading the data from zillions of motors trying to determine the ideal number of hours run before recommending replacements? Okay, it takes a ton of vibration data and creates/modifies the values used in the case statement. Wow, that sure took a computer with a lot of brainz to figure out! The University idea was a wonderful thing. Then, most of them being run by people of a particular political lean, kept building and making the campuses so opulent that tuition rates kept going up, and the Government kept giving out bigger and bigger student loans. So, perhaps now with the student loan debt bubble about to explode, Universities will scale down the spending stupidity. Back in 93 I was going to the University for a BSEE, got it in 4 years. Our classrooms were in dilapidated basements and trailers, but we still got a great education. The only difference was that we were able to get a 4 year degree and pay about $10,000 total. There was hardly ever a loan, usually a part time job would pay it off. Now either inflation since 93 has been 300% and the govt has lied about it for decades, or the Universities have simply gone mad along with the State Governments! The Universities will go back to trailers and basements with the same teachers/professors, and a 4 year degree might come in around $20K, the way it should be!

  22. From the stone age to the land of Babble on 'The Problem With Programming and How To Fix It' (alarmingdevelopment.org) · · Score: 1

Okay, I'll share a peak into my history when it comes to programming. Started out with raw assembler on 68xx and 8051 8 bitters. Complex and frustrating for the first six months but then it was easy. Then came the RISC parts in assembler not too bad to adjust to. Then I changed jobs and created programs to run on DOS for production end of line testing using QuickBasic. I literally said to myself this is for kids given it's absolute simplicity. Then I shifted to C on embedded micros, very nice as it gave you almost as much flexibility as assembly did, but in a far more human like language, so I found it to be perfectly in the middle of assembler and basic. As the embedded processors got bigger and faster I stayed with C and let all the young whipper snappers go down the path of C++/prime/sharp and so on. For me those spin-offs just added complexity that to this day I still say is overly complicated even when running on Cortex M4s. Of course somebody came out with a zillion RTOS's to make life easier. I never went the way of RTOS, but my co workers did and seem to like it. But over the years I've shifted from software/firmware to hardware. I write enough code now to validate the functionality of the hardware, and C works very well in that environment. In short, I stuck with C and didn't bother with the babble and its complexities today. So, for embedded, I say C is the Language, it goes great with a bottle of Vodka too! But then of course there was a fellow I worked with 20 years ago that was stuck on embedded Fortran, he loved it!
