I would think the author would go back to at least 2,000 BCE or even 10,000 and identify the collosal leap made in farming. For a species to go from forraging to agrigulture seems like an enormous effort of overlapping memes (and luck).
MIT has been working on an even safer method for years: Pebble Bed reactors. The idea is: seal the uranium in bocci-ball sized graphite balls (uranium reaction won't get hot enough to melt the graphite balls). to stop the reaction roll the balls away from each other. when the fuel is spent, the U is sealed in graphite.
Also, whenever people invoke Three MIle Island, I'm always obliged to point out that ZERO nuclear waste was released during the accident. It was all completely contained. Most people think it was like Chernobyl, but the fact is: the safety standards worked for 3-mile.
Two problems: the cheapest food is the least healthiest. In a local mall's cafeteria lunch-line, a cheesburger is 75 cents and a banana is $1.00. Second, fast food companies do have an obligation not to market trash. Especially to children! For galaxy's sake, look at Ronald McDonald and tell me he's not as much to blame as tobacco executives!
holy cow -- that many Gbps is faster than the time it takes your brain to determine whether you're looking at shot of tiffany vionette or a lactating naughty grandma!
i think this thread is proof that macheads are zealous, but not idiots. even the shortcomings of this article's bias aren't enough to shutter out the common nerdity of us all. cheers to that.
i like how a seemingly innocuous/. post about the simplest topic can lead to nearly 1,000 posts of entertaining banter... hardly any trolls or flame wars to be found!
I don't get it, how can you fake the WHOIS registry? I thought there was some follow up needed?
Man! All this time I've been putting my real name and address on like a sucker. Which is a pisser, b/c it really bothers me that people can look me up if they find something offensive on my website.
This is the Universal Computer from a short story in Asimov's book Nine Tomorrows.
In the story, the computer starts as a planet sized computer. The two techs who run it get loaded one night and ask the computer if man will ever reverse entropy. It thinks -- replies, not enough information
Fast-forward several generations, the computer spans multiple planets... same question is asked innocuously -- same anwser.
Fast-forward more generations, the computer moves into the ether. People speak outloud to the UC. The same question asked again -- same answer.
Fast-forward to the end of the universe: the computer begins computing the problem as the last star flickers out because it has enough data.
wonder how many of the half-billion mice are in the garbage, or shipped to a street corner garbage-pile somewhere in singapore.
the fact that some mice cost ~$1 makes me think that most of the cheaper half-billion mice are being produced overseas, where health/environment regulatons allow them to drive prices down and make cheap crap.
i'm depressed today.

Huh? I haven't rebooted my WinNT PC since December 2002!
Did you know when a process terminates, it gives it's memory back to the global heap? Most memory leaks are due to bad applications (that don't use system PageAlloc commands), and don't use up OS memory if terminated.
Ok, so if this really does work, I'd love to have one lying around my house for a cheap high. I think that would be the first evidence that it worked: recreational mood altering.
Then don't buy a PC, because AMI and Phoenix BIOS form the core of almost every PC bios out there. It's far easier to buy the BIOS developers kit from these guys and slap your logo on it (and your custom PCI reg config block) than to reinvent the wheel.
And don't go running to Mac, I guarantee they will follow suit 2-3 years after DRM becomes a major selling point. It's clear the DRM and the secure PC are both sides of the same coin, but the latter is far more appealing to the drooling masses.
Ever seen any of the code that comes from the indian code factories? Everything I've seen (three different CAD companies' C++ engines) is complete garbage and the ridiculously overpriced contracts were eventually dismissed for a few bright, corn-fed american interns who had a grasp of programming style. ironically, one of the interns was a second generation Indian-American.
It was bad enough they couldn't stop talking 'bout high-school on every album starting with 'Signals', but to hear 40 year old men sing words like that is embarassing.
Once the high-frequencies have been erased from clipping/limiting of the original (CD), they can never be reconstructed. So MP3Gain does nothing (to an already mastered CD).

Can't wait to read the book.

Let's not forget that when you're sworn in to testify in a court, you put your hand on a Bible
I've been in jury duty in Sacramento and there was no bible swearing. Do any other states/counties do this? Anyone?

sounds like the setting of CUBE:

Sorry, but I see more posters of Xena in lesbian households than in nerd cubes.
;-)
Personally, I had posters of Samantha Fox and Apollonia Kotero on my walls when I was a teen, but I bet none of you know who they were.
Boot time and Adobe (and iMovie), that's all they offer for benchmarks? How pathetic. Once again, Apple proves they're just full of marketing hot air.
Get with the real world.

Read the short story yourself for the answer.

Your ignorance explains your cynicism.
World Nuclear University Launched???
This giant University will destroy us all!
T-minus 15 minutes 'till impact!

Funny, scientific american ran a better article with the same concepts, but didn't mention strings once:

It seems like every day my company is postying flyers warning of virii, having us install patches.
Is this something we're just going to have to learn to live with on a daily basis, like:
1980's IRQ conflicts, MFM/RLL vs IDE
1990's hard drive partitioning, DOS/4Gw
2000's spam, popups, virii
i hate computers. but i love them.
I'll bring the pillow cases, you guys bring the doorknobs!!!
Good night, sweet prince.
7 words that make "Presto" suck:
