Hey I have a hot conspiracy idiocy for you. Barcodes are the mark of the devil! As soon as they get out of the research labs in a few years they will send all of us straight to hell sonny boy.
not likely, in future looking articles in the past there were predictions just exactly like this.. By now we should all be earning enough to support ourselves with 4hrs days. It didn't happen, why? All of that extra productivity has been stolen from us by the gilded class. Seriously, look at a chart comparing pay scales vs productivity since the 70s. The gilded classes are benefiting enormously from all of our productivity while we work 40hrs/week if not much much more for arguably less money than in the past given inflation. Of course point this out and the gilded class puts a bounty out for you to get character assassination from big media (which they own anyways). I read a story where workers get replaced by robots 100%. It ends up with the rich getting richer and most people living in even more squalor than now because they can't make any money to participate in the economy so they get the bare bottom minimals to stay alive, assuming the shoddy public housing doesn't collapse and kill them. That's probably how it will turn out too, because Republicans.
I'd love (love) to see your charge your electric car from solar where I live. You might be able to make it down the street a few weeks a year. Snow, clouds, rain, and the simple fact that there is only ~8 hours of sunlight during the winter means it is almost impossible to use that here. Wind is never reliable, almost anywhere, even at the best of times. Hydroelectric? There is some, but that takes a massive amount of land, and is rather dangerous, if the dam breaks (in one instance killing 100,000+ people, but that is nearly worst case). Also, expensive. Tidal? The nearest ocean is ~1,000 miles away, good luck with that. Geothermal? Yeah, can't do that either. So unless you expect to pipe the power thousands of miles (expensive, wasteful, and difficult to maintain), none of that is going to work for me, or large sections of the world's population.
Nuclear? Works fantastic! Probably powering this computer as I speak. Other than that, it's pretty much all fossil fuels and a little bit of hydro (which is pretty limited in it's expansion options).
But you know, you don't have to personally have the solar panels. They could be located in a central area and have power sent to your location.
So unless you expect to pipe the power thousands of miles (expensive, wasteful, and difficult to maintain), none of that is going to work for me, or large sections of the world's population.
but but but mommy! It's too HAARD!:(
Man up. What do you think coal, oil, natural gas etc power plants do now? Do you even remember the massive power outage that affected a large portion of the United States a few years ago? Enough solar energy hits the earth in an hour to fill all our electrical requirements for a year. The only problem would be getting that energy to where people need it. Stop your whining about how hard things are. People could setup individual panels at their homes to reduce load on the grid, and plants can be setup in various locations as well. If one location is cloudy, guess what? Another one probably isn't!
Same goes for wind. Plug your car in and when the wind is blowing, your car can soak it up. They don't have to worry about building large plants in order to store the energy for when it is needed. HELL, electric cars are perfect drains for wind energy.. They can soak up the excess energy produced and then it can be used when you want it. Best part is, lots of people would want to plug in their cars at night when there is no solar but there's usually a lot of wind energy! OTOH, you might plug in your car at work to soak up excess solar energy as well.
Hydroelectric? There is some, but that takes a massive amount of land,
so it doesn't count, right?
Other than that, it's pretty much all fossil fuels and a little bit of hydro (which is pretty limited in it's expansion options).
I'm not sure what country you are from. Here in the USA there's more and more solar and wind power. Frankly, not investing in green energy right now is going to make a lot of countries hurt worse when fossil fuels start to run out and suddenly the price of green energy skyrockets from the increased worldwide demand.
Yeah because everyone knows you can't use solar and wind to charge your car. I mean, this guy does it: http://www.rowetel.com/blog/?p=78 but that's a stupid idea up there with the solar (charged) flashlight! All that crap about hydroelectric dams, tidal power, geothermal and other green energy is just made up by liberals.. those things don't exist either and never will.
As we all know, if it involves change, or it's harder than flipping a switch then it's just plain not worth doing. That's the exact attitude that put a man on the moon, for sure!
Problem solved, now we can all go back to watching TV and doing nothing.
My local Insight cable co does something similar I think. One exception, they seem to do it all on their end of the cable and the digital cable boxes they rent out are made to access that.
They actually have vod for starz, hbo, showtime and encore.. you have to actually subscribe to each of those packages to get it, but afaik there's no additional cost for it.
A friend of mine had his xbox crash while playing morrowind. I had a couple of friends over to play some system link mp Halo. It was the first time I ever saw an xbox crash, noone else I know has had their xbox crash on them.
Also, he had a dvd dongle plugged in at the time so maybe that's the culprit.
N&V covered this in the June 2003 issue along with RFID and UWB. Page 22 for those who can get access to a backissue (say at the library or somewhere like that)
One problem (that's easily fixed) with the magnetic system is that both transmitting and receiving coils have to be parallel. If they're at 90 degrees little or no signal gets through. The fix for it happens to be using 3 coils, each one 90 degrees from each other on the receiver. The transmitter only needs one, but no matter how that one is oriented one of the 3 coils in the receiver can pick it up. I haven't heard of any other chips, but the LibertyLink chip from Aura Communications can automatically select the coils on it's own.
Very short range, but it works for something like a wireless headset where range doesn't matter anyways.
I'm going to agree with others, this isn't new.. I've been drooling over this radio for something like 2 years now.
One downside that I've found in my reading is that when you're using the bigger lcd (for tv and better scanner control) it drains your batteries much faster. You can control the scanner with the smaller lcd, but I think more complex options need the color lcd to set. If you're running it at home on an AC adapter, then you're okay, but mobile is kinda limited with the effect video reception/display has on battery life.
Then again, if you're the kind of person that drives around with their laptop searching for wifi networks, you might be used to that kind of battery life already.
I use winamp3 because of the media library.. I like having multiple playlists available and easy ways to move stuff between them. I tried 2.91, but the media library stuff in that fucking sucks compared to 3.
Really the only thing I miss from winamp2 besides the low cpu usage is the ability to right-click on the stop button and have it stop at the end of the song.
It would've been nice if he'd been a bit longer winded with his replies. You can't quite stretch out typed words with pauses like you can when you're standing in front of a camera.
Unless something has changed, modchips for the xbox are as simple as a replacement bios that you solder onto the test points.. bios as in a "dumb" romchip.
You could argue about the validity of the encryption for WiFi.. but I wont go there.
I am a licensed ham and it's true, we can't use encryption on licensed ham frequencies. I think there's a clause that basically says we can, but everyone has to be able to decode it. Rot13 would prolly be okay, but then there's not much point in encyrpting something if everyone can read it anyways!:)
Either way, as long as you are allowed to transmit on a frequency, and you're not a ham and it's not a ham frequency.. then encryption is fine. There are a few exceptions though, data and encrypted signals on FRS radios are forbidden by the rules that created them. Then again, that hasn't stopped Garmin from introducing a combination gps/frs radio that you can use to tell other people with them where you're at. I don't know many people who would shell out $150 more or less per radio for that though.
Anyways, even where you can encrypt.. if your equipment doesn't already come equiped for that, then it's very hard to get a complicated system set up. There are a few hobbyist audio inverter systems, but then that's the same as rot13 and anyone with that can decrypt it. All new cordless phones come with encryption now, I think they all work on spread-spectrum principles as well.
(BTW, as an interesting aside related specifically to this article.. Icom released a communications receiver called the "Icom R3" it costs about $350 give or take. It has a little 2" color lcd screen on it, as well as being able to receive anything between 500khz (iirc) and 2.4ghz, except for the 800mhz cell band. It can receive any AM or FM tv transmission, from the broadcast tv to the wireless video senders and these camera's. This radio has been out for quite some months, though I couldn't tell you when it came out.)

Actually there are a fair number of FTA mpeg2 streams on Ku band over here.. though C band isn't quite devoid of FTA mpeg2.
I know of no DVB cards that would take an authorization card for pay sat. around the USA though.
ALSO, I was going to make a comment like this.. If this project is going to support 'regular' analog tv cards as well.. like my wintv-dbx.. then I'll have to set up a box dedicated to this sometime or another. It would help if it could do the serial port control thingy, 'cause I intend on getting sat. when I move out of my apartment:P
No.. actually, that wasn't the intended nature of the corporation. That came from a 1886 US Supreme Court ruling that essentially fucked everything up.
Barry white day eh? Oh hell that would confuse the shit out of any japanese tourist or immegrants that would show up around that time of year.
They have a valentines day too, but then shortly after that they have a white day. That day is where everythings reversed, instead of the boys getting girls stuff.. girls give boys stuff.
Then they'd be wonderin who Barry is, and why it's his white day.
I had free access to all the major movie networks for a weekend and I'll tell you right now, it's the same way with all of them. I had free access to showtime for several years thanks to the cable companies' mess up.. and I knew that it sucked, but I didn't know the others did.
I wish I could find a good direct connect hub catering to tv shows.. Online is the only place I can rely on to get all my favorite shows, since there are so few of them now.. and they are generally fucked over by the networks.
Really? You know some rental stores that are open at Midnight? or 6-8am?
Wow.
Around here, people on the night shift can't just stop at a video store on the way home from work.. maybe before they go in, but that's kind of pushing it with some 12hr workshifts.
I know for a fact that SpectraDisc is using a sort of a "freshness" limitation.. to where a disc is fully readable once you take it out of a sealed package, but after a specific amount of time it spoils so it is no longer readable. There are no intelligent actions going on, it just fades out. According to their press release, the amount of time can be controlled between minutes or as long as weeks before the disc is unreadable.
Personally, the first thing I thought of when I read the summary was buying some of them for cheaper than "standard" dvd's, then ripping them.
It'd be even more amusing if someone figured out the chemical composition of them, then figured out what to do to make them not fade away.
I can't comment on Flexplay's technology, since they don't even have a webpage up yet.
nah, this is more like a book publisher suing you because you scribbled notes in the margin of their latest best seller.
You own the book.
You own the notes.
They should have no say about what you should do with your property.
Obviously, you shouldn't photocopy the entire book and sell it. But is that equiv. to what this guy did? As long as he only shares his "notes" and where he placed them in the book.. I should see no problem with that.
I still say the DMCA is the beginning of the dark ages which will kill technological advancement throughout the 21st century.. The next "holy crusade" if you will.
oh not this bullshit again

We are all also too fucking ignorant to type you instead of u, thereby proving our ignorance to everyone who has the misfortune to read our drivel.
