  3. Re:replace there web page with one saying web site on Ask Slashdot: How To Collect Payments From a Multinational Company? · · Score: 1

I wouldn't take the site down and put a different one saying that. But you might get results by taking the site down and waiting for them to call you about it, since they would probably just assume it's a technical issue. Of course, if you don't have control of the registrar then it's pointless.

So in short: take the site down or maybe turn the database off so it doesn't function correctly. Make sure any and all credentials you have for it are changed so that they are less able to get someone else to fix it. When they call you, simply feign ignorance of the problem and explain that you can look into it after they have paid their outstanding balance in full. Just be polite about it, and don't actually fix anything until you have a check or some other written notification from within the company signifying the check is on it's way. Once done, you can turn the database back on, or open port 80 back up or whatever.

Don't, under any circumstances, attempt to publicly shame them. It's unprofessional and you won't run a small business for very long with an "eye for an eye" attitude, at least not publicly. Furthermore, you'll just go to the bottom of their list of debts to pay, and probably to the top of their legal stack.

I just tell them to stop watching porn, stop downloading movies, and stop clicking on links inside email. For most people, that probably equates to "don't use the internet" which is fine as far as I'm concerned.. If you want to use a tool without getting hurt, invest a little time and effort into learning how. If not, just accept the fact that you will magically have problems crop up here and there, sort of like a car that never gets its fluids checked.

The problem is, most people simply don't want to learn new things past the age of about 16, so trying to elaborate any more than that is pointless.

  6. 2 days on Hotmail & Yahoo Mail Using Secret Domain Blacklist · · Score: 1

How in the world did it take you two days to figure out Spamhaus was blocking your stuff?

Save yourself some time down the road and just go to mxtoolbox.com. Enter the domain name it and can check all kinds of things for you. If a list is blocking it, you can get details as to why. In the past I've seen various reasons, but most are pretty detailed and provide quick access to the forms you need to get removed.

As for your idea of a secret shared blacklist between hotmail and yahoo, it sounds more like it's just a dynamic content filter that pulls data from spam lists to prevent the propagation of bad links. I doubt it's 100% realtime, so after getting Spamhaus to unlist you, yahoo and hotmail need to wait for their next content filter update to see the changes.

Anyway, I just thought it was a little weird that it took you 2 days to even get to step two of your problem.

  9. Re:What do you mean by 2030? on Gov't Report Predicts Cyborgs, Rise of China for 2030 · · Score: 4, Interesting

The problem is that people *can't* work for less. Inflation has been way ahead wage growth for decades now, and isn't going to change soon. China gets away with it because, as a nation, they seem to be rather accepting of having 98% of the population living in literal poverty. That won't fly here in the U.S. and a lot of the political unrest we've had in the last 10 years is one side effect.

As for bond investors leaving the U.S. market, that's also not going to happen any time soon because, as bad off as we are, there are still no better alternatives for bond investments. It doesn't matter how economically powerful China gets, there's still way too much government corruption, lack of fiscal transparency, and a propensity to mess with their exchange rate to suite their needs. That's not an ideal alternative. The UK failed because the U.S. was right there ready to step in and take over, with an emerging democratic economy and a thriving industrial base.

Simply put, America becoming a stronger economy was beneficial to the rest of the world, including China, partly because is created a strong consumer-driven economy. China becoming a stronger economy won't have that effect because they lack any sort of middle class; the super-rich can only consume so much. Like it or not, as the U.S. economy tanks, the rest of the worlds will follow (and is following) until either we right our ship, or another similar economy is ready to step up and be the dominate consumer-driven economy, or the world economies all start to fracture and become more isolated again, at least for a while.

Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 are also designed to be online games, rather than single player games, so it makes sense for them to be tied to Battle.Net. And yes, I know there is always going to be someone out there complaining about being stuck in a hotel room with bad/no wifi and can't played a game they paid for, etc, but I think it's pretty clear that those situations are in the minority.

Does Battle.Net have some of the positive (for Blizzard) side effects of traditional DRM? Sure. That doesn't make it DRM though, especially since the games aren't designed to be off-line experiences anymore.
