Lets say one day you protest something the government does that you don't like, lawfully exercising your free speech and rights to petition the government for a redress of grievance. Now you have popped up on the government's radar screen. They then go check the voluminous records they have started keeping on every American!
There are millions of laws on the books many of them are complex and hard for the average person to follow. How many of them have you broken and don't even know about it.
All the government has to do now is go back and go through your call logs and other electronic traces with a fine tooth comb looking for one to bust you with.
Your best friend is a member of several environmental groups, one of them the government suspects of environmental terrorism. You were in close proximity to this drug dealer, that mafia guy, some guy who got busted for breaking into homes.
Even though you are a law abiding citizen can you be sure that every single person you ever have come in contact with is, or was as well? That is the true danger of this. Guilt by association or proximity.
The price of Gas in Dubai is 25 cents a gallon, Iran 42 cents, Qatar 83 cents, Saudi Arabia is 45 cents per gallon, Venezuela 11 cents. That is the real cost. What we in the western countries are paying is designed to generate huge profit margins for oil companies. They are fucking over the consumers, and yet you stand here saying, "Please sir can I have another!"
Because the name servers for that domain would still get the traffic from the mail servers requesting if there are any records for a host. That plus the return saying sorry we have no results would still eat up bandwidth over the course of a month when you figure several hundred queries a minute. Then take that bandwidth to over two years.
Returning 127.0.0.1 or any results at all is considered a positive answer by most the mail servers.
I closed my lists and two years later after checking my dns server and seeing traffic for a couple of dnsbl lists which had been empty for the last 2 years and finding that we were still getting several hundred requests per minute.
Our blackhole lists are defunct. We announced their closure over 2 years ago and it was
widely covered by the press at the time. We are still recording several hundred lookups
per minute so Friday December 9th 2005 we started answering positive to all requests. If your
mail is being blocked simply contact any isp blocking you using these lists and let them
know they need to remove them ASAP! If they have questions they can contact me directly.

To identify whom to contact please reference the error message you receive.

In this case you would contact somedomain.com you would tell them that the
whatever.compu.net dnsbl is defunct and is now answering postiive on all
lookups. As such they should remove it and any other compu.net dnsbl ASAP to
prevent legitimate emails from being blocked.
If they need verification send them to this web site.
I announced this upcoming change to both the SPAM-L mailing list and the
news.admin.net-abuse.email newsgroup
"Over 2 years ago I shutdown blackhole.somedomain.net, pacbelldsl.somedomain.net, and pm0-no-more.somedomain.net then announced the shutdown on the news.admin.net-abuse.email and several other mail and abuse related lists. As of today I am still logging several hundred requests per minute to it two years later. In one week I am going to start answering positive on every lookup to those domains. I don't want to do this however I am not going to continue to bear the load for something that ceased to exist over two years ago. So basically check your mail servers and if you are using the blackhole.somedomain.net, pacbelldsl.somedomain.net or pm0-no-more.somedomain.net dnsbls remove it asap!
Thanks."
It was the only way to get them to stop and if I check my server today, I will likely find I am still getting some requests on them. So it's not dickish at all as another commentator claimed.

Uncounted [uncountedthemovie.com] is an explosive new documentary that shows how the election fraud that changed the outcome of the 2004 election led to even greater fraud in 2006 - and now looms as an unbridled threat to the outcome of the 2008 election. This controversial feature length film by Emmy award-winning director David Earnhardt examines in factual, logical, and yet startling terms how easy it is to change election outcomes and undermine election integrity across the U.S. Noted computer programmers, statisticians, journalists, and experienced election officials provide the irrefutable proof.
UNCOUNTED shares well documented stories about the spine-chilling disregard for the right to vote in America. In Florida, computer programmer Clint Curtis is directed by his boss to create software that will "flip" votes from one candidate to another. In Utah, County Clerk Bruce Funk is locked out of his office for raising questions about security flaws in electronic voting machines. Californian Steve Heller gets convicted of a felony after he leaks secret documents detailing illegal activities committed by a major voting machine company. And Tennessee entrepreneur, Athan Gibbs, finds verifiable voting a hard sell in America and dies before his dream of honest elections can be realized.
UNCOUNTED is a wakeup call to all Americans. Beyond increasing the public's awareness, the film inspires greater citizen involvement in fixing a broken electoral system. As we approach the decisive election of 2008, UNCOUNTED will change how you feel about the way votes are counted in America.
Because I purchase bandwidth from my ISP for a set amount of money to be able to use with any site on the internet that I choose to visit. I should not then be penalized because X site does not pay my isp to allow my traffic to go to them or visa versa.
But it doesn't work like that in real life.... The more real sugar you eat, the more you feel full. But with HFCS, the more you eat, the hungrier you feel. The problem is that HCFS inhibits leptin secretion by the body, so your body never get the message that you're full. Which works out great for the agribusinesses but not so well for the rest of us...
While not the biggest fan of on-line music I have occasionally bought albums via iTunes. However 9.99 is the max I am willing to pay for any downloadable album. So I have skipped four albums in the last two weeks due to their pricing being higher ranging from 13.99 to 19.99 for the downloadable album. That works out to $39.96 in lost sales if you work it out using my max price. Why do they think we are fool enough to pay as much for a downloaded album as we would for a complete packaged CD. I also notified Apple of my decision and why so they could use it as ammunition in their fight against the labels. I am waiting for the price fixing lawsuit and the abuse of copyright claims against the recording labels. Maybe one day. I know I am a dreamer.
This is why you shouldn't use Tivo. If you have one replace it with one from a different manufacturer. If you are thinking about buying one get any but tivo several posts here offer alternatives. If Tivo is driven out of business by their customers based on their abusive policies it will be a stern warning to those who follow!
I have posted this on slashdot before but I think it warrants posting again for this article.
We all have seen the many publisher provided services for purchasing E-books, E-Music, and Software Downloads.
These services try to limit your options and choices or even to remove them from you totally. With many of these services you must agree that you do not even own that which you wish to purchase in order to buy it. Instead they license you right to use their private property.
We see the prices on the virtual which rival that of the physical. We instinctively know that the production cost of a E-book, Downloaded software, or MP3s is so much less than the cost of a compact disc or a printed book both of which require paper, ink, artwork, packaging and so much more that is totally lacking from the ethereal versions.
Their sales decline. "Stop the thieves" they cry out into the night! Make more and harsher laws to protect that which is already protected they demand of our governments. Protect our property and damn their rights is their idea of an ideal. I am a honest person is my vehement reply. So why attempt punish me for the crimes of others.
They attempt to smother new technology on the premise that it may possibly be used for illegal activity.
While it is not my intention to justify the misappropriation of their material I must point out it's their own fault really. I blame their lack of foresight and their lack of anything resembling common sense. They do not exploit the markets available for them or if they do it's a halfhearted attempt. In the real world people are not buying what you sale one common step generally taken is to consider lowering your prices until your sales pick up. This also applies on the Internet.
In a concise conclusion I state that I personally prefer to compensate the authors and composers of the material that I so enjoy in my daily life. Currently I do so off-line. So Publishing and recording industries I say make it worth my while and convenient to do so and I will be one of the first in line online.
The reason Slashdot posters tend to lean a little to the left is because the average slashdot reader is educated and reasonably intelligent. They tend to seek out news for themselves without automatically accepting the news that the media spoon feeds them which just so happens to echo the corporate/political party line. I am not aiming this at republicans or democrats instead these are general statements. Becoming politically and socially conscious will expand your mind and tend to change your point of view.
Try this for a shot across your bow. The rest of your argument is simple. It all comes down to the definition of the word liberty. Here's a really good article about it. Permission to repost it given by the author.
Well, the floor of the Senate is about to heat up with sex, sex, sex. Homosexual sex, pornography, abortion after casual sex, sodomy of all kinds, use of contraceptives and sex toys. Washington is about to become lewd, lascivious and downright raunchy. It may even get into S&M. All thanks to that filthy amendment fourteen. Yeah, that's right. We're going to talk about fourteen. Put the kids to bed, and turn the lights down low.
While the First Amendment is the popular one -- the one you bring up when you're friends tell you to shut up already, or when public school boards start quoting Deuteronomy -- the Fourteenth Amendment is the one we invoke when we want to do something so nasty that the law forbids it. Okay, the amendment does more than that, but you've got a jog button on your.mp3 player, and if I started this by explaining "substantive due process" you'd be off listening to The Pixies, or some other worthy music by now. But the Fourteenth Amendment has been invoked muchly in the courts as our shield for citizens' moral choices in opposition of legal prohibition, so it's actually honest to start this topic talking about hot, hot sex.
So what's so interesting about the Fourteenth Amendment these days? Well, I predict that you are going to hear much about it over the next few weeks as the Senate Judiciary Committee debates Bush's appointed nominee or nominees for the Supreme Court vacancy that's been announced, and for any others that are on the horizon.
Back in 1991, I had pneumonia and was laid up while Anita Hill and her former colleagues were being grilled by the Senate Judiciary committee. I don't know who had the worse week, me, Clarence or Anita. For those who remember that tawdry moment in American judicial history, Clarence Thomas was nominated to the Supreme Court by George Bush the Elder, when up from Thomas' past came a woman who claimed that he sexually harassed her when they worked together around ten years previously.
What followed was an inept attempt by senators to have a useful discussion about the allegations. The committee held hearings for a week grilling Hill and her colleagues about when Thomas may or may not have made a lewd remark, and whether the remark was original to him, or taken from a book, or Hill's imagination. The phrase "private parts" was uttered often that week. How degrading. Not because senators had to stoop so low, but because they were afraid to say "penis," "pubic hair," "sex organs" or other more accurate phrases. But it was also degrading because it was so unnecessary.###
What the Senate's Judiciary Committee should have done was to simply ask, "These are serious charges, but do we see a tendency for Thomas to either act in this way, or for this kind of personality flaw to corrupt his legal judgment or authority?" I'm not excusing sexual harassment, but simply acknowledging that he-said, she-said contributions to a job interview can be better handled than by entertaining accusations and refutations. Ironically, Thomas' appointment to the Supreme Court was to replace Thurgood Marshall, a notorious womanizer. Marshall and William Douglas, both notorious Supreme Court Justice womanizers, served the liberal agenda quite well. What was the sudden problem with womanizing in the Supreme Court? Politics, of course. Prurient opportunism from the left.
Now, come on. You didn't think the left was above the fray, did you?
Here's a nice article with lots of facts for you to ignore on our godless consitution. It wasn't accidental it was intentional.
"In 1797 our government concluded a "Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the United States of America and the Bey and Subjects of Tripoli, or Barbary," now known simply as the Treaty of Tripoli. Article 11 of the treaty contains these words:
As the Government of the United States...is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion--as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity of Musselmen--and as the said States never have entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mehomitan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.
This document was endorsed by Secretary of State Timothy Pickering and President John Adams. It was then sent to the Senate for ratification; the vote was unanimous. It is worth pointing out that although this was the 339th time a recorded vote had been required by the Senate, it was only the third unanimous vote in the Senate's history"
If I was either of the two suspects I would be crying my eyes out and demanding to be tried and jailed in the US instead of the "Local prosecution". Their best jails would likely not come up to the level of our worst.
Lets use Fahrenheit 9/11 by Michael Moore for example.
I first saw the movie from a download from bittorrent after he said he encouraged people to do so. I then saw it at the local theatre they got their heads out of the butts and decided to show it. Seeing it in the theatre was a much better experience than the download by far. I later then bought the DVD when it was released. I also bought the book Dude where's my country. and the Audio version of Will they ever trust us again, letters from the war zone. I also bought bowling for columbine on dvd.
Much of the music I have downloaded off the net over the years was music I previously owned on CD but could no longer locate the media. Others I have downloaded first but later bought the legit copy on CD-Rom or Itunes.
Before that I probally wouldn't have bought any of them. Having access to copyrighted material on the internet is bad how?
Should we be poking fun at the serious issues being raised by these simple folk. They sincerely believe what they are saying about the intentional bombardment of their home with radiation. Instead of ridicule, some kind hearted geeks should be going out there with various forms of detector equipment and identifying the source. Where's Egon Spengler when you need him?
Who knows the Door Keeper and Key Master might be heading that way already to do the dirty deed and finally let the traveler loose into the world of men!
Any time you go into a movie with preconceptions and your own ideas and what is going to happen or what should happen you will be disappointed. It's like the person who goes into a movie and 15 minutes into it has guessed the ending and of course they don't enjoy the movie quite as much as someone who lets it happen in it's own pace without trying to look behind the scenes for the solution.
Me personally I enjoyed the series and I have enjoyed the movies. I expect this one to be no exception.

development
Hi all,
Well, it's been fun. Around 2 years of development sucking up most of my free time early on, particularly, a few code forks, near miss lawsuit, many heated arguments over everything from licensing to design choices. Seriously, though, it HAS been fun, even if it doesn't sound like it.;)
Today, I received a copy of my company's new handbook. In it, there is a clause that states that anything developed while under their employ that may be of interest to them becomes their property. Because of this, no further development will be done to NeoMail. I will continue to accept any patches, posting these at the homepage, but just won't risk working on the software given the information in the latest handbook, especially since I'm a salaried employee without set hours.
This should not be held against my employer in any way, as it's becoming almost standard in employee agreements, and is solely my decision -- no direct threat has been made against me, I'm just playing it safe, fair, and legal. Any nastygrams sent in their direction will likely just cause me trouble, so unless you hate me, please don't do that.:)
I apologize in advance to the thousands of NeoMail users, hundreds of which have mailed me over the past two years. I'll truly miss working on the software.
I actively encourage you guys to fork as many branches of the software as you want at this point (don't call them NeoMail of course:)). A little credit would be nice, possibly something saying it was based on NeoMail, would give me warm fuzzies, but not necessary.
When I can buy a Ebook for a fraction of the price of the hardback or paperback. Until then they can forget me buying any ebooks. They have no paper, no artwork, no shipping, and negligable downloading costs. So why do they think they have to charge the same as a paperback for something I might loose forever in the next computer crash.

Subject: [Neomail-announce] Important announcement about future NeoMail
development
Hi all,
Well, it's been fun. Around 2 years of development sucking up most
of my free time early on, particularly, a few code forks, near miss
lawsuit, many heated arguments over everything from licensing to design
choices. Seriously, though, it HAS been fun, even if it doesn't sound
like it.
Today, I received a copy of my company's new handbook. In it,
there is a clause that states that anything developed while under their
employ that may be of interest to them becomes their property. Because
of this, no further development will be done to NeoMail. I will
continue to accept any patches, posting these at the homepage, but just
won't risk working on the software given the information in the latest
handbook, especially since I'm a salaried employee without set hours.
This should not be held against my employer in any way, as it's
becoming almost standard in employee agreements, and is solely my
decision -- no direct threat has been made against me, I'm just playing
it safe, fair, and legal. Any nastygrams sent in their direction will
likely just cause me trouble, so unless you hate me, please don't do
that.
I apologize in advance to the thousands of NeoMail users, hundreds
of which have mailed me over the past two years. I'll truly miss
working on the software.
I actively encourage you guys to fork as many branches of the
software as you want at this point (don't call them NeoMail of
course
was based on NeoMail, would give me warm fuzzies, but not necessary.
Again, I'm sorry.

Hey I own Will Smith's Willennium! Don't Dis it.
