I agree, but WHY is that? WHAT do Apple's programmers and designers have the Linux/GNOME programmers do not? Is there any (technical) reason someone could not hack together a smooth Mac OS X work-a-like on top of Linux? Maybe Linux/GNOME users are just blinded by their Unix heritage. But then why isn't Mac OS X blinded by its NEXT heritage?

true dat. I've done some Pocket PC development for both Strongarm and XScale processors. In our testing, the app compiled for Strongarm rather 2x slower on the 400 MHz XScale processor than on the 206 MHz Strongarm! That's 4x slower per MHz. ouch.

Intel said you needed to "optimize for XScale". I asked how and they said to use their new XScale compiler. Unfortunately, it was not released yet! I became a beta tester for their XScale compiler. Unfortunately, even with max-speed optimizations, the XScale-only binary was larger and about 1% SLOWER than the Strongarm binary.

what was Intel smoking? I really hope their marketing hype that the new XScale architecture can scale up better than the old Strongarm architecture, but we'll see...

Politics is a great investment. You can buy influence so much for such little money. Are these politicians really whoring themselves for a mere $10,000 or $20,000 a pop? They could ask so much more, but I guess there is a lot of competition in Congress for these dollars which might keep the price down.

The new Journaled File System, on which the Linux port was based, was first shipped in OS/2 Warp Serverfor eBusiness in April, 1999, after several years of designing, coding, and testing. It also shipped withOS/2 Warp Client in October, 2000. In parallel to this effort, some of the JFS development team returnedto the AIX Operating System Development Group in 1997 and started to move this new JFS source base tothe AIX operating system. In May, 2001, a second journaled file system, Enhanced Journaled File System(JFS2), was made available for AIX 5L. In December of 1999, a snapshot of the original OS/2 JFS sourcewas taken and work was begun to port JFS to Linux.

I read all about the qualified people who can't find jobs, but I have not seen it first hand. My employer is actively hiring for senior QA jobs. The resumes that actually land on my desk look good, almost too good. When I interview these people, almost ALL of them haved lied on their resumes. They say they have a Masters degree in CS and are C++ experts, but they don't know what a pointer is or how to find the length of a C string. Their resumes say they know JavaScript, but when I ask them to solve some JavaScript code problems, they admit they can't because they have not used JavaScript in 4 years and must have the docs in front of them to remember the syntax.

Where are all the qualified people? I assume they are the ones who still have jobs because they are certainly not the people who I am interviewing..
