Depends on what you are trying to tell the person...
For example, if you just want to send over some information such as another person's phone number or directions to a restaurant or just a "heads up" I'm going to be 15 min late type message, SMS works great. For example, I'm in a meeting, but I need to goto lunch at noon, my friend messages me, "I'm going to be 30 min late to lunch", then I can stay in that meeting longer instead of rushing off and waiting at the restaurant. But I cannot answer the phone and talk to him during that meeting.
I use SMS and SMS-email in many ways, but it does not replace a phonecall, it's in addition to a phoen call.
Sun Microsystems will overhaul most its server line and cut prices Monday in an effort to show that it's got enough research power to stay competitive, even with today's depressed spending.
I went to a gym that had them hooked up to TV's, which I thought was much better, and the threshold was based on what sort of routine you pick. Also, you had a remote right there, and headphones so that no one else would steal the fruits of your biking. I think they had treadmills that were hooked up to the same concept.

I thought MS copied "windows" to make it easier on the user to manage and maintain, and not actually require people to know what the "heck they were doing". But I guess I'm way off here! So again, why pay so much more money to run win machines when you can run linux for free if you have to know what the heck you are doing for both?
on the sidewalk... When you walk down a crowded sidewalk you tend to turn sideways and slip through the crowds, but with this thing I think I would be more worried about running over someones foot. Does it come with foot detection AI?
And also, after viewing the video of the guy trying to climb up those stairs, it seemed like he was taking over the whole staircase, people will not stand for that when you are walking up the stairs... a human on their side walking sideways takes up so much less room than a person walking normally. Well that's my two cents. I do think that its useful for certian people, i.e. postmen, who have to walk the same route everyday, and of course they don't need to slip through crowds and stuff.
I think its a little different when it comes to countries. He has also done a lot of work for AIDS and other "good" causes. Countries can't really be compared to drunks, I'm not sure how you actually came up with your anology.
A little off topic but Terminator was about this too, well some say that John O'Connor doesn't send a friend back in time to sleep with his mother to create him, but he sends himself. Well, he wants to send the person he trusts the most to do the job, and who does he trust more than himself? Donno, just some food for thought.
On a side note, the Preview for T3 sucked. (Saw it before LotR: TTT)
Its a matter of curruption, the indian government is VERY currupted, anywhere you go, you can get away with so much if you have the all mighty dollar. Bill Gates just decided to take advantage of that, send gifts to a few key people who make decissions and voila, the whole government switches to windows.
But how many farmers are going to change their ways? One expensive computer isn't going to convince them to change their age old techniques that their father and their father's father and so on had been using and have passed the knowledge on to them. There are still towns in india where there is no running water, no telephone service (or these services are very rare), etc. And either way, education isn't going to help the poorest of the poor, they are just going to keep sinking into their poverty. While the rich will just move farther away. I don't really see this being too much use in the poor part of india, maybe in the cities where people can still afford it but not afford a computer may want to use it. I can see that, and I think that IS the goal (well we don't want to shoot too far) of the project (or atleast should be).
Alright then, maybe its NOT like cable TV. How about this example, a phone company. Each customer gets a seperate line, and they get sent seperate transmissions. It's true that the charge you for long distance, but I usually don't use long distance on my phone. So, I think the best solution would be to provide local mail/web (i.e. news, multimedia content, etc)/usenet to users, and say, if you connect to these servers it won't effect your download speed, a "local call".
