  1. Re:Tivo on SONICblue Hits the Auction Block · · Score: 4, Informative

The major player in PVR land is DirectTV followed by EchoStar. These satellite providers bundle the PVR function into their receivers if you want. Makes great sense since there's a kluge with an IR Blaster you need to do with Tivo and ReplayTV to control the other box. Also cable companies like Comca$t have an "OnDemand" service with their digital cable service that also does PVR functions like Tivo.

Tivo really needs to compete since PVR functionality is being wrapped up in other services like satellite and digital cable. Why pay extra for Tivo when your media provider can just roll it up for you. They become another grease spot on the "Al Gore Memorial Information Super Highway".

  6. Re:Working Together... on Evolutionary Database Design · · Score: 1

If you work with a DBA that resist change, get a job at another place. A DBA that doesn't evolve, dies. To not use a feature or function out of ignorance is blatant stupidity.

I've been in this business too long (30+ yrs) to stop learning. The day I do that; make me a manager. I've seen developers balk at using new database features because they refuse to RTFM. The good ones listen and learn. The really good ones use what they learned again. The things I've seen developers do in designs make me laugh out loud.

When I started at my company, the developers did all the work a DBA should do. The systems had no security, ran slow, and the database would get corrupted every 3-4 months. I had to recover from two of these major fuck-ups. It's been over two years and the database designs by the DBA team I'm on run smooth with no corruption. This included moving up a database version for more stability (M$SQL 6.5 sucked wind out a dead cat's Ass). The developers couldn't even figure out on how to convert the monster (2 - 50 Gig DBs). It's now split between a dozen servers with no single database problem bringing down every system we have. A developer may know features, but they never know stability, recovery or security. That's what's on the line for the DBA. We're the ones that accountable for database systems and it's our ass that upper management goes for when systems are down.

There was a comment in this thread on how a DBA rewrote code to speed up a process. That's done in my team every day. I've heard the old Oracle/Sybase/Informix/MSSQL debate for years. What I've seen is that a developer will write code that sucks for any database they use.

As for the mature crack, I'm 51 and you can byte me. I've already seen the fuck-ups that you're going to make, years ago. They never change. Just the size of the systems and the languages developers use. Just remember to learn from them so you don't hurt yourself again. You only have two feet and one ass.

  8. Re:Why Tape Is Good on Large IDE Drives as Long-Term Archival Media? · · Score: 1

The problem with any data on a medium is not how long it can be held but how long can it be read.

When was the last time you or your company used a 9-track tape spool? I'll bet that there are some of those laying around in the back of your media library.

You don't even need to go to that extreme. The venerable 1.4M floppy is going the way of the dodo. The laptop I have at work has no floppy drive. I've had to use other peoples systems to transfer data to them for other people. Let's not even talk about 5 1/4" disks.

There are companies that just archive data media in "Big Cave" companies and forget they're there. When it comes time to retrieve it, they hope someone somewhere still has a working device that'll read it. I worked at one company that always had a 9-track tape and a card reader just in case.

Much of the data loss that's suffered is not from media failure as much as "Retrival Failure". I went out to buy a small cassette palyer so I could rip my old tapes to MP3 files. So if you want to keep data for an extented period (>10 yrs.), either keep a drive around, transfer to new media, or know a company that can read it.

I see SonicBlue eating up Tivo. They've been on a buying spreed for a while. They bought ReplayTV. No, they didn't come up with that technology; just the money to buy it. They also bought Diamond Multimedia for the RIO MP3 systems. That's what they need to save the money for. The "Scum-Sucking-Lawyers" will take a big bite out of that merger.

Sounds like they want stem piracy and to increase cash flow by resales because of "SCRATCHED" CDs. That's what they liked about vinyl. When you just can't stand the POPS & SKIPS on "Dark Side Of The Moon" any more, you buy another copy. How did you think it stayed on the Billboard Top 100 for over 10 YEARS! Damn those seeds!!!

It also reduces the second-hand CD sales like Half.com. Some indipendent music stores were being pressured by the record companies not handle "Used CDs" (...or is it Perviously Owned?).

Any way you look at it, increased cash flow is the main motive. Buy once, buy often.

Don't forget the properties of insulation. You can boil water in a paper cup because the water pervents the paper from reaching it's kindling point which is above 100C.

The leaves (10 of them in fact) traps air next to the chicken which acts like an insulator. Remember all that itchy fiberglass in you actic. Same thing, less itchy. The two properties together keep the chicken ad a comfy 100C for 45 Min. There are only a few leaves left after the process since most gave their lives up for the chicken. The lava also helps since it's made up of trapped bubbles (More Insulation!)

The last part is the hole to let steam escape. Can we all say "Pressure Cooker". This get the job done in no time. Alton, you had a show on pressure cooking to make broth. The pressure get the water above 100C. Hence faster cooking.

Cooking in lava is possible with a scienific explanation. Now if I can only find one in Delaware.
