loosing portability is one thing (but don't forget windows is supposed to run on itantium & alpha too). Security is the name of the game. If you run the application in a VM sandbox, with no escape possible, this might be an argument.
And make a bittorrent version available for the times your site cannot cope with the traffic, torrents just might get trough when the http server is congested.
Personally, I've got all my important crap in the one computer I can trust...the one between my ears
If a lady has Physical access to this i bet even this computer cannot be trustted. But hey, this is slashdot and the odds that this will happen is small. 8)
Truecrypt (Windows, Open source) does exactly this. But it (by default) only allows 2 levels of encryption, so after revelaing 2 passwords you have relvealed all. This way of data hiding does have a lot of disk space overhead however.
They can arrest and hold you (without charges) just for being a (terrorist) suspect, what you are right now. The only way to come out of prison is to reveal your password. I hope for you it is just porn.
Is there any knoppix based distobution that has the vmwware vmtools integrated? To run you knoppix cd in a (faster) vmware box without having to install it, or remaster a cd?
Why isn't firefox a signed application? Well first there is the technical point: You can buy a verisign certificate, but it only tells You are the mozilla corporation. It does not tell you that all the source in firefox is OK. It is nothing more than a fancy MD5 hash. And i wonder if a signed executable is portable to other OS'es?
But then who is going to apply the ditital signature, is there still someone who understands ALL of foxfire's code? No jsut as there is noone who understands all of i.e. code.
Do you trust mozilla foundation more than MS? As ptorr explains there is no reason to. So what is this signature worth in the end?
The ip4000 has a special CD tray and desk wobble does not make a difference for me. I just dit no discover how to print to the cd with an other application than the standard CD label deliverd with the printer.
my canon pixma ip4000 (170 euro) can print on Specially coated cd's/dvd's just fine in full color. (printing has not the disadvantages of label that can make the dvd/ high speed cd unstable in the player)
And the same printer can print the inlay for the cover.
Epson also has a range of inktje prints (9000 series) that can print on cd/dvd's.
Why invent something new for something that already exists?
PS, please note that a badly applied label can damage your player, but printing directly on a cd does not have this disadvantage.
hothardware "thx nvidia for giving us this card remark"
hothardware:
here is something we should mention about performance, however, especially considering the measurable performance hits the 6200's took with AA enabled. Here's a quote from NVIDIA that explains what was happening... "The 6200 with TurboCache was designed for the mainstream user. Because of this we made some architectural design decisions such as not supporting color and z-compression. This is not a TurboCache limitation. This was a conscious design decision as most mainstream users play at medium resolutions with little or no filtering. In addition, there is also a known bug in the current ForceWare driver that effects AA performance. NVIDIA engineering is aware of this bug and is working on a fix now for a future driver release that will substantially increase filtering performance."
Translated: no this card is not fast enough to do AA & Anio, sir.
Het told you to find 10 vulnarebilties. Then find them. They don't have to be all true buffer overrun errors. How about finding a security vulnarebelity in a "wrong setup" environment. Avoid best practice and run php under root. and so on. Bet you can list your 8 missing vuln's in an hour.
How about "file system becomes damaged if power is unplugged" (DOS atttack when running without UPS).
On the other hand, this metered proxy will be great for my 3year old. It will be at least 3 years before he can read enough to know how to bypass it. 8-)
By linking the contest on the front page the editor of/. effective sabotages(slashdotted) the contest today. So you might have your "no splash screen" after all.
If you reach the site after all just vote for something inappropiate, and it will be disabled by default in the next version.

Design Element Users Answering "Very egatively" or "Negatively" Pops-up in front of your window 95% Loads slowly 94% Tries to trick you into clicking on it 94% Does not have a "Close" button 93% Covers what you are trying to see 93% Doesn't say what it is for 92% Moves content around 92% Occupies most of the page 90%
So if you use these kind of elements then people will dislike your ads.
that is also what is said in the article People click on (pop-up) ads because they think the system's trying to tell them something," Hallowell said. "The average Firefox user is more aware that they're ads, not system dialogs."
Those ad's will have a high click-through values, but i doubt that is the kind of people you want to visit your site anyway. Do you want to have your product associatated with "tricks?" Yes-> You sell porn. No ->
For advertisers a high click through is important because this indicates the targetted audiance matches the pages the banner is shown at. of course banner supplier will try to game this figures, exacly as some people at/. play games with their karma.

They use encryption and promise you will be anonymous. "ES5 hides your IP address while you are uploading and downloading files"

Since the "network neighbourghood" of microsft can be seen as an p2p application. It remains to be seen who will win eventually.
however...
According to sliders computers are far better hackable on parralel worlds
I agree.
Tetris like games have a market of their own. FPS is not for livecd kind of people yet. Think tetris like arcade.
Games knoppix disapointed me because the games are not acessable fromthe desktop, and i wonder if all the games are accesable from the menu.
A friend of mine had his son banging on the keyboard at roughly 6 months,
May i recomment baby type (trailware, 10 days, no spyware) that turn you default keyboard into a activity center.
If you know a free (as in open source) version of such a program please let me know.

he will think twice of photoshopping after his bandthwidthh bill's come in.
The only other thing you need to determine is what the other project is he is talking about. I could not find in in a 5 minute google.

It will be several weeks before the next episode is aired in the US. You will find a new source then.
Remeber the internet: If you try to censor it, people will find a way arround it.
