First it was manufacturing, next IT, next Software Development, now science and engineering. The government wonders why the economy is in the shitter.
It's called globalization. Outsourcing sucks. Corporations are cutting the domestic workforce, and they wonder why their products are not selling.
We gotta take industry back and reward US companies that design, and build their products here.
Screw this globalization shit.
When I was a little kid there was a show called "Get Smart".. it was in syndication but I watched it after supper. When I was 18 years old I designed gadgets.
One gadget had a microphone, amplfied what it picked up and inverted the signal 180 degrees. I used an OpAMP to invert the signal, and also there was a potentiometer in the circuit so I can vary the signal phase. If you pointed a speaker connected the amp to the sound source that the microphone was pointing to you can cancel out most of the sound. I used a horned loudspeaker.. kind of like a megaphone. microphone was mounted below the speaker. OK so it looked kind of like a sound canceling gun. I made a lot of crazy gadgets when I was a kid. I also made a remote controlled fire alarm so if you are cooking and the alarm goes you can hit the remote and disable the alarm for 10 minutes.
US price for low sulfur diesel is $4.50/gal
I run regular gas in my Jeep Wrangler... $3.60/gal not bad. I like to go 4 wheeling so I don't want to sell it and downsize. the commute averages me around 21mpg
not bad for a Jeep. 17mpg in 4wd when I am on the trails. Fuel cost me $45.00/week
uhm.. my engineering Job is 24 miles each way. I drive a Jeep Wrangler because I love to go 4 Wheeling, it's a great convertible in the summer and awesome in the snow in the winter. It's fuel efficient enough for me. I get 21mpg for the back road commute to work. When I run synthetic oil I can squeeze 24mpg out of it.
I run synthetic in the spring/summer/fall since I do the oil changes then and save money. In the winter I have the stealership do it and run the factory recommended.
Fuel costs me $45.00/week for something I like to drive.
If we all drive hybrids or fuel sippers the government is gonna look at other ways to pay for roads. There are already talks about taxing us by the mile instead of taxing us by the gallon.
I can't justify the cost of an electric car. A volt cost $548.00/month.. no gas. My Jeep cost me $304.00 month and even at the price I am paying for fuel now my Jeep is cheaper to operate. Plus I can drive in places where you can't take a volt. And I have.
Try driving in the Rhode Island Desert. Yeah it exists.. check out google maps. There was a quarry there that posioned the soil around there years ago.
It's a desert. I have a blast 4 Wheeling there. You can get air off the mounds. If you live in the area it's off of 95 South, exit 6.
My yard is 1 acre. 1/2 the yard is wooded, I cut 1/2 acre. And I only cut it once per week with a push 6hp mower. 5 gallons of fuel lasts me 2 months. That's not expensive. I prefer to have a yard.. great for a paintball game, archery, football. I use my yard. And doing my own landscaping is a nice change of pace from programming!
I don't think it's practical to live 15 miles near your job. I prefer to live a rural area. I don't live in suburbia... I live in a heavily wooded area, only jobs really are agriculture. I prefer to live that way.
I think oil speculators are the main problem.
I have two vehicles. the fun vehicle is my jeep wrangler. The boring car that we will take for a long haul and my wife usually uses it anyway is a yaris.
Yaris saves gas but at what cost ? It's not a fun car to drive at all.
Hmm... Why do we assume aliens are friendly ? What if they exhausted their natural resources ? What if they are looking for a source of food and we look like cows to them ? I don't think it's a good idea to assume E.T. is friendly.
I don't think I watched way too much sci fi in my lifetime. I just think we really need to be careful.
flu, agent, response, cops drill !
I believe it was Benjamin Franklin that once said something like "When you sacrifice freedom for security you will have neither".
Man, our founding fathers must be rolling in their graves.
I've got floaters. I've had one since I could see! I've got one that shape of a bubble. It's small when I'm reading but if I look far away it can be the size if a dime @ 12 feet away ( yeah I measured it). It's translucent so I can see through it, though it's shaded like a bubble. I had one that was shaped like a M.... small and above the bubble. I was always told to ignore them. but now I dunno. I'm older and the one that looked like an M has changed shape. It's a curve now. same position.
Treatment for bad floaters is they suck the aqueous humor out, replace it with saline. Your body replaces the saline with new aqueous humor. But I don't want to risk it.
I figured I'd have more floaters after the procedure.
I know what you are saying... floaters suck. I think the threaded ones are capillaries that broke off due to an injury.. like head trauma. I played football in high school, and after a few hard hits that's when the M shaped floater showed up.
I deleted all pictures, I deleted all posts, I de-friended everyone, I changed the name, contact info, everything... after that I disabled the account.
Why... let's just say some things should stay private. TMI. Less is More.
I think everyone should just delete their fb account like I did. Trust me.
I bet the objects observed were "video artifacts" generated by extreme heat exposure to the camera. Venus surface is damn hot! 895 degrees F!
I really the the camera was baking in the heat. You need more data points than just visual to make a claim like that.
Hmm.. knowing how the military plays with acronyms I always had a gut feeling that HARP was used to stimulate the ionosphere. Have you ever seen what's constructed there ?
They are just gonna mess this up. I can't believe the Drones don't have a self destruct system. First off military GPS radios have a specific password seeded handshake in order for the gps to process the beacon signals. If the authentic handshake is not there the signal is ignored. maybe the drone was a disposable device so military gps wasn't used. I think in that case it would have been easy to build a smart receiver. GPS signals are week. if the beacon is strong then the
autopilot should ignore gps signals and use standard inertia guidance to get out of harms way. Also a self destruct would be a nice feature.
I'd like to know why the drone wasn't equipped with a self destruct system. Isn't that weapons systems 101 ???? Damn who was the idiot who left that out ?
Our President doesn't even know how to play poker. If it was up to me I'd call the Iranian leader and say "uhm... be carefull, the drone has a self destruct mechanism that could go off at any time. The last 2 minutes of telemetry from the drone indicated the self destruct system was armed. I suggest letting us retrieve the drone "
I was talking to a coworker that used to work at the same Defense Contractor as myself. I am disturbed by the fact that Command Control Systems are written in JAVA! Java is fine for web applications, but NOT AN APPLICATION THAT NEEDS TO PROCESS DATA IN REALTIME! Defense contractors look for programmers with JAVA experience. Why ? Because the colleges and universities are dumbing down technology. If you want fast code, it's got to be written in at least C. Or better yet, Assembly Code. Machine Code is the fastest, we all know that. When people argue that today's processors are much faster I like to see them running a Command Control system during a battle and the damn code is tied up due to garbage collection. Imagine how fast the control system would be if it was coded correctly in C. Now DARPA wants phone apps ? Who here on slashdot has a new Droid ? What if you are out and the phone is rebooting ? Also Android is insecure. Are you going to trust a java based application in the battlefield ? NOT ME. Java's place in the military is possibly running the front end of a mobile based webapp for barcode scanning inventory. That's about it.
This is what happens when you have bean counters in stead of engineers lead projects.
Java was never designed for the battlefield.
There are issue with hive technology too. This is why distributed computing is the way to go. what happens with a hive? Take out the queen or in this case, central computer. The intelligence should be distributed. Even if the hive is distributed geographically, all you need to do is take out communications.
Some people say spread spectrum is secure. I say what happens when you take out the entire spectrum ? It can be done.
Hmm.. What about internal pressure of the Earth's core ? They forgot about that. I guess this is what happens when the US Educational System dumbs down the physics books! I predict the dynamo will not be self sustaining.
Cloud services are going to redistribute IT needs. I believe companies can benefit by running their own Cloud. Security and Control is lost if you use a cloud offered by a vendor. Outsourcing overseas didn't work so is Cloud another attempt ? I really don't want to see the dumbing down of IT.
If I ran a company, even if my data was encrypted, I'd prefer to have my data in my data center and an encrypted copy offsite for DR purposes.
I think the Bean Counters of the World are going to leverage the Cloud for their own evil purposes. That being said I advise all of us to keep our data centers internal.
Hmm.. When I wanted to learn how to create a compiler I studied the gcc source! When I wanted to study kernel development I studied the Linux Kernel source.
The knowledge that I picked up from my study has helped me along my career. I'd say OpenSource has created jobs.
Uhm.. a Vandergraaf Generator generates a static charge. A Tesla Coil is used to produce AC voltages my Tesla Coil has a 3" coil and a resonate frequency of 4300hz. This is far from lightning. Lightning is a static discharge. Check out the large Vandergraaf Generator at the Boston Museum of science. That is what you will need. A Tesla Coil is a completely different animal.
Don't buy a ticket to or rent a view of any movie released through Viacom. It's time for us all to cut their revenue stream.
Also we all should be thinking about building an underground internet.
If you disable all the logging and performance reporting to HP the touchpad is actually fast. I have one. When I noticed what was running and reporting in the background I killed it.
I like my touchpad and the Eclipse development plugin works well!
Wrong dude. There is plenty of money to be made Native Linux App development. It's called support!
I think this post is just FUD. Have you ever checked out Freshmeat.net or Sourceforge ? There are lots of new applications being developed for Linux.
First it was manufacturing, next IT, next Software Development, now science and engineering. The government wonders why the economy is in the shitter. It's called globalization. Outsourcing sucks. Yeah but assuming that an alien life form could be helpful and friendly is foolish. You don't know one way or the other.

As far as sleep goes, you are much better off doing what your grandparents did! Take a shot of brandy before bed. You will sleep... it's like nyquil.

We should write smarter webapps. You can detect floods easily via ip address. It's real easy to block by ip address, even a caveman can do it.
