I have one of these bright light lamps that uses an array of blue leds that emits light with the wavelength around 460 nm. Actually the leds are only blueish, and emit a bright white light. I imagine the article is talking about the same thing, so the leds don't resemble the "super blue" leds that everyone is annoyed with.
I'm a bit skeptical though If I would like to use this kind of device in my car, because this simulation of the sun can mess up your sleep rhythm if you take it regularly while driving, or so I could imagine. I use the bright light every morning, to make me wake up and boost my moods generally during the dark winter time, which lasts a long time in Finland and can really bring my moods down.
I also suffer (when viewed from the modern societys point of view, where you go to work from 8-16 and that's it) from an irregural rhythm of sleep, so I feel really energetic during the nighttime, so I need all the help I can get.
Maybe the idea is good, but I'm not sure if I want to be artificially kept not from sleeping while driving my car. Why not take a break ? This brings us down to the question of the modern society and the ideas that companies come up to boost peoples "work effectivity". I would rather take a siesta during the day than drink coffee and look at bright lights, but sadly that is not possible in so many places.
If you want a nice phone, get an unlocked Nokia N95-3; you get 3G speeds, a 5Mpixel camera, stereo speakers, GPS (works with Google maps), a Safari web browser, and lots more. You aren't locked into a contract or carrier, and you can put in a different SIM card when you travel. Umm, no. You don't get a Safari web browser, you get the one that Nokia made that is based on webkit (same HTML framework that Safari uses). The Nokia browser apparently sucks compared to the real Safari that you get with iPhone, and I can easily believe that when thinking about my user experiences with Apple vs Nokia.
Anyone who actually read the article might tell you that was not the point of the article. They were wondering why the brain seems at first to weaken the synapses in parts of your brain after the initial learning phase. Now they discovered that actually the opposite happens in different parts of the brain after this initial process.
Okay, not like I really feel like defending the guy, but be a little fair. When Norris retired from competitive karate tournaments, it was with a record of 65-5, which isn't precisely anything to sneer at. Also, whatever your opinion of kung fu flicks in general, I think you'd have to concede that "Return of the Dragon" is a pretty important piece of the genre, even if Norris only played the heavy in it. It's actually Way Of The Dragon, where Chuck Norris battles Bruce Lee at the Colosseum. Return Of The dragon may or not may be the name of the US release, when the films were re-released after Enter The Dragon, which was the first movie released in the US, but was made after Way Of The Dragon.
But anyway, Chuck Norris was the middleweight champion 1968 in karate, and that's something too. And he stayed undefeated until 1974 when he gave up his title himself.
You can save the audio file as AIFF from Audacity, which doesn't use lossy compression. No need to convert between two lossy compression formats (MP3 to AAC). Then you can import that file into iTunes and convert to AAC. Result: better quality ringtones.
4) Because it is "Good enough." There is no question, the new formats are way better at compression, especially at lower bitrates. That's nice, but people don't give a shit. MP3 is good enough. Most people would call MP3 @ 128k CD quality, because on their equipment, it sounds like it is. @ 192k it is getting hard to tell without good gear. @ 256k, even pros on good gear under double blind tests can't pick it out reliably for normal music. As such people just don't really care about the gains. Sure, AAC is better per bit. However if people already consider their music "perfect" then why do they care?
What are you talking about? Normal people (including me) can totally tell the difference between 128k MP3 compared against for example 128k AAC that is used with iTunes and iPods everywhere. The MP3 format has certain traits that you can hear when listening to music encoded in MP3, no matter how high the bitrate is. Even at rates like 256-320 kpbs you can hear for example the general muzziness of hi-hats. I can't really say any other concrete examples, but you can really hear the "profile" of the fileformat from the general sound produced.
And yes, I can hear a difference between 192 kpbs AAC and CD-audio, but at 256 kbps AAC (the quality I rip my music in) it is really hard, but you can still do it if you know what to listen for. I think the human ear and brain can make out these little differences and sound profiles easily.
It is true that the big public doesn't really care about sound quality, when 128k MP3 sounds good enough. But I like to at least get close to the CD-audio quality that we had with old portable CD-players back in the days when you could not carry your entire music collection in your pocket. I would not buy music in MP3 format, it's just not good enough for me.
Also, the commentary on some of the B5 episodes is hilarious, with the actors of Sheridan, Ivanova and Garibaldi commenting on the couple of episodes and sounding like they're drunk while doing it.
You might want to try out Transmission http://transmission.m0k.org/, which is IMO the best torrent client for Mac Os X and has the least bloat I've seen yet. Azureus is horrible bloat with tons of unnecessary features.
Marketing numbers. So of course it is the number of created accounts on the system, not active players. Played it for a month myself (the free trial), got bored of killing small animals and haven't looked back since.
I DON'T KNOW ANYBODY WHO USES THE CAPSLOCK KEY! EXCEPT PEOPLE IN SLASHDOT POSTING STUPID STUFF! Why do modern keyboards have the capslock key? It's totally useless, totally oversized and in a real stupid position compared to the usage. Good thing you can remap it, but anyway. Do you know anybody who uses the caps lock? Much easier to use shift to type capital letters.
Anybody know what filesystems do CD based MP3 players like the Rio Volt 250 support ? I have all my MP3 CD's burned with ISO9660 + Rockridge extensions, so can I read these CDs properly or at all with these players ?
Of course these can be read as standard ISO9660 CD`s, but you dont get the full filenames. Am I right ?
No, no and no. Browsers should not work with invalid HTML! IE works with some broken HTML, and this has lead to some group of multimedia hippies starting to write invalid HTML, thus making these sites not work with other browsers.
Nintendo will survive because it has *good* games. Nobody needs 20 Quake 3:s. XBox and PS2 will probably have hundreds of games compared to Nintendo, but Nintendo games have more quality. Microsoft may have the money to advertise worth half a billion, but personally I dont need people telling me what to play. Even the Gameboy has better games than most of the Playstation/PC games produced. Nintendo has survived since the 1980`s and will most certainly survive from now on.
You are right.. standards are good in a way. You dont have to think about all the options, and can just concentrate on the standard. The command line interfaces (bash, csh, ksh etc.) are pretty standard. And terminal programs dont have to care about 10 different toolkits, 50 different window managers, different sizes of fonts etc.
In Linux/*BSD you have just too many options. That may be a good thing, but I hope someday there will be a standard GUI environment for Linux. Now there seems to be two major players, Gnome and KDE. If you want to program GUI apps, you have to either choose other, or make two versions of your GUIs. That just sucks. And I dont personally like to use KDE and Gnome apps mixed, because it just does'nt feel right. Maybe I will switch to Mac OS X someday..
Well move to the U.S and you just might do that.. now how many guns were there per person again ?
I'm just glad I live in Finland. And I dont have to thank Allmighty God for that.
I thought webpages are about content, not flying pop up windows or ultra hip design. Maybe some people care more about the way they can hide the content under pretty graphics, but I personally want to get the content (information) out with any browsers available at the moment.
Old standards allow this perfectly. What`s so important about these new standards that they need to be enforced to use ?
What about text based browsers ? It is really annoying for example to find a solution to a hardware problem, when the vendors page is full of odd javascript:NixNaxPox("index.html") or such crap.
Damn you webmonkeys. In the future I will probably see messages like "Sorry you need IE 8 and Windows 2002 SE SP4 to read your email"
I would really like to use Mozilla already, but
it just is too damn slow to use yet. I think they
should focus the next release on speed of usability for people to
really start using this and discover more bugs.
The menus come crawling down, and everything is
just sluggish on a P200MMX/64MB Linux 2.4.0.
Still using Netscape 4.7x because you can actually
use it.
Of course, text mode browsers like lynx and links
are better, but nowadays multimedia comes before content too often, and you need javascript/flash/whatever to get the information
you want. That just sucks. Damn uusmediapellet content-creating webmonkeys with the cool clothes
and funky hairstyles.
HardSID rocks, but unfortunately nobody has
written any good HardSID supported players
for Linux or other unices. I dont know why support
in sidplay for unix hasn`t been implemented, the windows version has it. Does anyone know the current status ?

Or even rocks for that matter, see Ewoks vs Stormtroopers.

In Korea, full-force, running, midair knee-extension kicks are for old people.

Start using Goatse.cx image as background for your webpages. Or even better, CowboyNeal. I would turn off my monitor immediately and run to the woods.
