  1. The Zaurus is not a pda on New Zaurus Linux PDA Available In the U.S. · · Score: 4, Insightful

My Zaurus is not a PDA but a PDT (Person Digital Tool), and anyone who says otherwise is getting a foot in their arse.

A PDA is a glorified address book that plays music and sells for 300$. My Zaurus (SL-5500) costs less than 200, runs a mobile X-11 server, allows for quick coding (802.11b CF card + ssh) when I am off campus and can't log into something heavy, plays movies, serves webpages, and runs Linux. The Zaurus is very hackable and has a high fun value attached to it. $699 is alot to spend for it, but in 6 months you can ebay one for about 300 which would be more inline.

AMD and intel have numerous cross liscencing deals goinging on that ammount to Intel can use AMD's IP and AMD can use Intel's IP for, I believe, compatibility. I am not sure about the exact deals but in theory AMD can make a compatible implementation Intel's HyperThreading tech (via reverse engineering) and Intel can (apparently) in practice use AMD's 64 bit extensions with neither paying royalties or considerations to the other. Other examples from the other direction are AMD implementing MMX and SSE as 3DNow and 3dNow Pro.

  4. Re:STF up. on Rob Enderle Announces Death of Bluetooth · · Score: 1

Horribly off topic here but here it goes.

USB is terrible for some applications, video capture being the most obvious. The IEEE1394 spec requires a separate controller for the port, but USB controllers can e implemented in software. So when you are capturing video with firewire you have more free processor time than with usb 2.0. I am sure that there is a similar Niche app for bluetooth that will keep it alive and functioning.

(I am not sure if my explanation is right, but most benchmarks I have seen show that firewire uses less of the processor than USB).

Public educaiton in the USA is a wack meeting. First we teachers are given a few days of preplanning where we are at school working, but we have to go to about 8 meetings in 3 days to get caught up on the latest state imposed paperwork. Next you have the Superintendent showing up telling us what he would like to see without actually saying anything for about 30-45 minutes. Then when it is nearly over and he gets that I need a Subway look in his eyes someone raises her hand and asks the question... "Why do you think your ideas will change anything?" At which point any student caught pulling the fire alarm could easily get enough money from a collection from the faculty to hire a really scummy lawyer to get him out of trouble.

So I am already upgrading two components, why note spend a little more and get a new proc and mobo and make everything faster?

I am sure many who upgrade are in this circle. Their computer works fine, but when they need to upgrade one part they may need to upgrade others to get it to work fully.
