The PRS-505 and the PRS-700 are both current models. The 700 has a touchscreen, which increases usability at the expense of screen clarity. The touchscreen is an overlay to the e-Ink screen, so you're viewing it through another material. The 505 is a nice device and handles PDF just fine. I picked one up a few weeks ago when Borders had it on sale for $199.

This is a good thing for games and does nothing to detract from them. Everyone gets what they want out of the game, because the use of the feature is optional. This is really nothing more than adding a finer level of control to the easy/medium/hard/insane difficulty settings by allowing you to set a single scene/puzzle to easy and then go back to hard mode.

The only real loss to gaming out of this is that people will be less able to act like a snob for being so elite as to have beaten a game that others could not. They'll be reduced to leveling insults accusing others of having bypassed the uber hard parts that they, in their infinite skillz, we able to defeat without even using their hands or having the TV/monitor on.

And in a few months, Outliers will go to paperback, where it will be cheaper than $9.99, and the used copies of the paperback will be around $4. Kindle prices are only good on books currently still in hardcover only. For anything else, a used paperback is almost always cheaper.

I buy books frequently (several per month), and generally stick to used paperbacks. I tend to sell the books I don't care for, and keep the ones that I will refer back to (I don't read fiction, so books have repeat value for me). I would argue that the "subsidy" you point to is no subsidy at all. I'm still significantly better off buying dead tree books rather than a Kindle version.

I do have a Sony Reader that I use to read out of copyright books and chose it because Kindle can't handle PDF well. I'm not averse to eBooks as some are. Just waiting for it to actually make financial sense.

I hope this game is as cool as it sounds, but I have one major concern - balance. If you can summon anything at any time, it's going to be difficult for them to have balance in the game. Figure out the most powerful item and summon it to kill anything you need to have killed. It's one thing to balance 20 races in a game, it's another to balance the dictionary. Of course, maybe the puzzles somehow take care of this issue.

Two thoughts: First, it's not 720 or 1080, but the Wii really doesn't look that bad. Outside of the first 10 minutes of playing any game, I generally forget completely about the quality of the graphics. It's a first impression that doesn't mean much. The same actually goes for the motion controls - they make it easier to learn, but that only matters for a short period. After that, I'm just playing the game. Second, both paradigms have their problems. With the Wii, sometimes going ga-ga over motion controls leads to crappy games. With the PS3/360, sometimes going ga-ga over graphics leads to crappy games.

I've been diagnosed with it as well, but I still don't believe it's a "disorder" or worthy of medication. I have no doubt the medication helps - I've taken it. I don't take it anymore. I do two things to combat it. First, I get regular exercise. This has an amazing impact on many areas of my life, including my ability to do boring work. Second, I work on being consciously aware of my ADD related issues and recognizing when I'm doing them. I'm no master of will power, but I'm fairly capable of refocusing myself repeatedly.

Some of this is easier for me now that I'm older and more mature than it would have been had I been smart enough to try it when I was younger. I can see some of the patterns developing in my kids, and I'm going to do my best to avert them with better habits rather than allowing them to get into the position I was in by the time I got to college (no ability to attend lecture, no ability to study and finding the material difficult enough to require doing at least one of those).

If I read a textbook with your thoughts on #4, I'd toss it in the trash. The benefits of trade have been clearly evidenced through numerous academic studies. To suggest that self reliant industrial capacity was responsible for the end of the war ignores several facts. First, Germany was able to start the war due to the same thing. Second, most of the industrialized countries were on our side, meaning that even if production were distributed, it would have still occurred. Third, specialization leads to greater efficiency, so we would have had not only more weapons, but better weapons. Fourth, since Germany and friends turned on the larger portion of the world, they would have been cut off from the majority of the factors of production and therefore unable to produce enough weapons to sustain. Fifth, with free trade, Germany would have been too dependent on other countries for other necessities to even think about waging war on them.

Everyone in protective isolation is a more likely brewing ground for hostility and war than everyone in cooperative interdependency.

The problem with this is that students are generally not in a good position to evaluate their educational needs. Many middle and high school students prefer to not be challenged and to do as little work as possible. A likely outcome of a student rating system is that teachers who offer easy classes that require little work will be seen as the highest quality educators.

Some of my most difficult teachers in high school are among those that in retrospect I recognize to have done the most for me. Only a few of those would I have evaluated so highly during my schooling.
