I am thinking about dropping cable televion and just getting internet access until DSL comes my way. $79.00 for cable.. I don't watch much television. And... Heck it's broaband. basic cable would still be available. I am looking for alternatives. Maybe DirectTV and DSL. or.. perhaps I can get a T1 to my house and sell bandwidth via 802.11b. I allready have wireless access to my company assigned laptop, hacked compaq IA-1 on my dresser, and wireless access for my kids room on the second floor. Everything else is 100 BaseT cat 5. if I can get 20 subscribers in my neighborhood I will be in business
I've been using Linux since kernel 0.96 and I am disgusted with United Linux. This will stifle innovation. I know I will not allow any of my code to be distributed with it. I hope Stallman and Trovalds can put a stop to this.
I'm tired of AT&T. I have an alternate for TV, Direct TV. But... internet access.. Verizon if you are listening please bring DSL to Swansea, MA! AT&T sucks!
All is needed is a package of the recent source. The end user can build it! Also I wouldn't loose sleep over this. WineX will certainly die and Open Source will have control again. The only games that play flawlessly are the Quakes and modified Quakes (Star Wars, Arena). I tried Homeworld, it dies, I tried Half Life, it died. So why do we want to support WineX. I don't, and we can control the direction Wine will take. I bought crossover wine.. and they are contributing back to the wine project, so let's back codeweavers and the wine progect. Transgaming is out.
Also let's promote native games!

No need for radio airplay when you have the internet. Record labels can set up their own streaming radio station to promote new music. No need for Radio. I don't listen to my radio anymore. I use my Neo35 Mpeg player. Commite time radio has far too much talk. So I listen to my entire CD collection on my MPEG player.
This is a joke right? I've been building / designing robots for years. First of all Microsoft Windows isn't the OS of choice for robotics. I use a handyboard (http://www.handyboard.com), for one robot, a embedded controller running Linux for another robot, and a 68332 controller for yet another design. I use Linux to develop code for all three, and the embedded controller also run Linux as it's OS. The other two robots make use of Linux for code generation (GCC for the 68332 robot) and IC for the handyboard.
You need lots of Digital IO and lots of A/D and D/A ports if you want to build a real robot. I've got sonar, and I'm going to use the CMU cam for vision recognition (http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~cmucam/). The embedded controller based robot also as a wireless 802.11b connection to my home LAN.
I wouldn't spend $599.00 for a robotic base that hooks up to a lpatop. I am guily of building the CMU pprk robot to be driven by a Palm Pilot http://www.acroname.com/robotics/parts/R91-PPRK-3. html but at least that has a holonomic drive system and Infrared Proximitty detection. I just wanted to play more with a holonomic drive.
before you spend $599.00 do some research.
My next robotic platform is going to use the Power wheels Wild thing as a base. I'll be taken a dremel tool to the toy. It will also use optical encoders to detect wheel position, Polaroid Sonar, IRPD, an embedded PC-104 controller, a homebrew A/D PC 104 card, a hombrew Digital IO card, a homebrew D/A PC104 card, a homebrew TPU card, a homebrew H-Bridge, and a homebrew servo controller. But I will be using the CMU Vision recognition system and DLINK USB->802.11b adapters.
I went to college for Electronic Engineering, not System Administration. You can never automate a good System Administrator. I do however write my own code to do trends analysis, system monitoring. I also double a a Oracle backend / DBA person. I'm technically a Systems Engineer, not just a System Admin. I design solutions on HPUX, AIX, Solaris, and Unix. If you think all this can be replaces by a direct sales rep... think again. And I've got three boys, a house, a Silverado Extended cab Truck, a wife..
A degree doen't count for everything either. People need talent, people skills, team player, etc.
Ahh.. I think firewire is going to evolve. I am a systems engineer and work with million dollar machines.. AIX black raven... so. They us e SSA drives. I can see Firewire drives evolving into what SSA is. Raid over Firewire, that's cool.
Well Gates is a gready egocentrical asshole. The GPL will exist as long as there's free speech. So, Gates, you greedy communist bastard, get over it! Your monopoly will eventually tumble! It may take decades, but it will eventually fall. You create bloateware that's buggy. The public can exapand on GPL code and add functionality. In the beginning software followed an Open Source type model. I remember as a kid code posted on bulleting boards for my Sym-1. People and programmers shared ideas. Well the GPL also allows us to share ideas. So.. Gates, go count your money and give it to some charity that gives a damn. What goes around comes around, and eventually your software empire will tumble to the ground.
First of all amature science is alive and well. This dude walks into Frye's and asks a clerk for an inductor, if he was a true scientists he would roll his own inductor, it's not hard to do! I can even tune one down to.0001uH! So.. dude get a life.
As far as my amature projects go, try creating heat through a limestone catalyst! I've done it. Also my Solar panels charge several marine batteries, the marine batteries are connected to an APC 600 UPS (cheap power invertor!) Ahh and there's my homebrew robotics. And there's the work with Linux I am doing.
I want to create a solar powered boiler that will produce enough steam to drive a tesla turbine. Ahh.. and there is the old fashion inductive load on the power lines. Could this be the source of energy to drive my tesla coil next halloween? I can haul a large inductive 60Hz antennea in my truck to the high power lines and hand an inductive load on the power line. That would be cool.
First of all gasoline release more then Carbon Monoxide.... It also releases Benzene and other harmfull chemicals. Gee... just extracting carbon dioxide isn't going to save the world. What a joke.
with only 128k up upload speed for most users, no one is going to resell bandwidth. I have 128k up/ and 684k down with At&T. I have my own tools to measure traffic at my interface, and I uploaded several files and my location was at a T1, I only averaged 128k to my server and I did 5 uploades of a 10MB file as a test. All upoloads capped at 128k. I then ftpd the file back to my office at work, all 5 were at 680k. I wouldn't share this bandwidth, it's just enough for my boxes.
Time Warner misses the point, if they charge for Bandwidth then NO ONE will be interested in video on demand. The Infrastructure they designed will be for nothing. If AT&T does this I will drop them, eliminate my cable TV, get a Direct TV dish, and go with a DSL connection.

Hi, this isn't a wireless monitor, It's a wireless computer! It looks like we can get Linux on this puppy! I've got Linux with Xwindows to fit on a 128MB flash! All you have to do is nfs mount your large apps. Right now I have a Compaq MSN companion running Linux and the LinkSYS USB wireles hub on my bureau in my bedroom. Now.. this puppy would be cool it it's affordable, note I paid $89.00 for the MSN compaion and $44.00 for the compact flash. So... anyway. Cool!
I did the same thing. Last year was an exception. When the price of a Compaq Presario 7100US (AMD 1.3GHZ Athlon w 256MB DDR RAM, CDRW, DVD, GeoForce 2 w/ 64MB RAM, 1394, USB 60GBHD) I figured.. gee I can't buid it that cheap so I bought it. Now I ran into one issue, no health monitoring chips in the beast, so I can't monitor the cpu core voltages or the heat of the box. Arrgh! if I built it myself I would be able to monitor with lm_sensors!
If ATT follows suit I will find another method odf accessing the Internet. I'm not going to pay for pop up boxes in my browser. Even though I have my galeon/mozilla browser set to filter out pop up boxes, you still get traffic from them. Also what about SPAM? This charging us for overbandwidth will cause us to actively sue spammers and the pop up ad companies. If TimeWarner wants to promote video on demand they better stop this. Also we should be able to filter out graphics if this is the case. Gee I'd use lynx and just get the information I want. Coporate america made the internet evolve to this bandwidth pig, not the internet users. I was perfectly happy with lynx, gopher, and ftp and usenet. Now website have ties into doubleclick, that sucks bandwidth, plus all the ad popups, that sucks bandwidth. I encourage all Time Warner cable users to drop thier provider all in the same week, to send them a message.
Yeah I tried to order a box with No OS! I said I didn't need one because it was going to be a Linux box, well they couldn't ship a box without an OS... So, I built one!
Well I'm sure most of us feel the same way. He's got to demand that none of his code is used in the Darwin code base because according to Apple his contract was null and void to begin with. Also, I welcome his skills on the Linux / "Real" BSD (Not AppleSauce) team! It's time for him to migrate on over and develop Open Source code for Real open source platforms. His age does not matter to me, just talent.
We can control the market. Don't buy any new hardware that's SSSCA compliant. Don't go watch movies that are lobbying to get this bill passed. 20th Century FOX is actully against this so I am a FOX fan now, big time!
