  2. What it means is on A State-By-State Guide To Restrictive Community Broadband Laws · · Score: 1

That the federal government is going to have to step in and prohibit state/county/city/other legislation restricting internet access. Such a thing is not without recent precedent. Our state recently enacted a law that prohibits counties/cities/towns/etc from enacting gun laws so that state laws could be followed.

I remember a few years ago Verizon stopped expanding FIOS and cited just these sort of local restrictions as the primary reason they stopped. Pity for those of you who don't have FTTP service available.

How is Origin malware? What does it do that makes it malware? It does have DRM but (depending on the game) its not exactly rocket science to either remove the DRM or find an existing no-DRM crack for your purchased game.

Origin gathers your personal information, computer information, application usage, software inventory, software usage, and peripheral hardware usage. It reports this data back to EA/Origin. You can Google about it or spend a few minutes and read your origin EULA.

I don't know about the US but in Ontario they use the fax a lot in the medical practice (and between pharmacies) when there is no electronic interchange available. They are not allowed to use email because it's not secure. My doctors office just has the documents go directly into their electronic system and if they need a paper copy they print it out from there.

That's a bit of a fallacy, especially if the fax is sent over VOIP as a hop along the telephone network.

  7. Re:about fax on Ask Slashdot: Sounds We Don't Hear Any More? · · Score: 1

oddly enough, someone emailed me yesterday asking if it's possible to attach a fax machine to VOIP. And even stranger, it apparently is possible.

That depends entirely on the VOIP you're talking about. Does not work with Magic Jack for example. Does work with Verizon FIOS and Bright House (with occasional errors). Pity on the magic jack, I had hoped to use the thing as a "dedicated" fax line. I ended up giving it away to someone.

I don't think most people would consider $10/month "very expensive". It is a small amount of money by almost any measure.

Is it worth $10/month? That's a personal question... but there's no way that's "very expensive" to anyone with a steady job...

I simply don't hear radio much anymore. My kids don't listen to it, I don't hear it in cars driving by, I don't hear it much in stores, and I certainly don't listen to it. But the simple numbers that tell an absolute and unmanipulable truth is the advertising revenue. Every other statistic is a complete and total fabrication created in an effort to prevent the total freefall of existing sales and stock prices. A great example of these desperadoes is that they often show revenues from 2009 to the present. This makes it look like a growth industry but in reality it is a recovery from the disaster that was 2008. Quite simply people don't want to be told by a bunch of baby boomers what music to listen to. They have a device in their pockets that gives them total control. Remember these are the same sort of people who loved putting one good song on each CD so that people were effectively paying $20 per song.

How do you propose they figure out what new music to put on the device in their pocket?

Sirius/XM? yes. Why anyone would tolerate 10 minutes of music 10 minutes of DJ chatter, and 40 minutes of commercials I will never understand.

I agree sirius is better. As for the why? It's very expensive at list prices. That is, if you aren't onto their game where you have to call and bitch every renewal. If you do, it runs about 4 bucks a month. One of their operators told me about the pricing scam when I was going to cancel a few years ago.
