"Microsoft's first Windows Phone 7 update is apparently causing some users' phones to not work. Microsoft has advised at least one person to take his device into a store for a fix."
The other fifteen windows phone 7 users have not yet been in touch with technical support, but Microsoft is very concerned.
Completely absurd. When I was in high school, my friends and I regularly skipped 9 days per semester (as the limit was 10). I proceeded to go to college, get a degree and have a successful (so far) career. High school was a dreadful place to be, and forcing things in this way is just going to make the kids resent it even more. This is major overkill, people in that district need to get a grip on reality....in other news, Anaheim Union High School District votes Monday to place snipers on rooftops to guard against jaywalkers near campus.
I can't believe I'm typing this but I think they failed to properly promote it. I've never read the comic, but I heard about the movie last year and watched it (netflix I think - can't remember). I thought it was great! I wish I'd been able to see it in the theater.
Apple did go after jailbreak, and got stopped by the US Government. I don't know how you could be a reader of slashdot and not have heard about it since this was such a big deal last year.

It's a matter of price I'm pretty certain.
Without contract subsidies, dumbphones in my area (West Florida, USA) run 30-40 dollars. Some are cheaper, a handful are a little more expensive. WITH a contract, dumb phones are often completely free. Smartphones can be had for as little as $200 with a contract, or $500-$700 without. Smart-phones often generally carry premium pricing over and above a simple data plan.
When people can get a Samsung vibrant or Motorola droid, or even an iPhone5 for 50 bucks with no contract subsidy, I think you'll see dumbphones wane. Right now they're still a toy for the "wealthy".
"partly because they're better at web surfing and killing time. I know that if I have a full laptop, I'll be tempted to spend lots of time messing with the internet in the hotel room or wherever. But I did't go wherever I went to sit around and surf the net - I can do that at home."
You make a good point that I hadn't considered. I took my laptop on my last vacation and wasted quite a bit of time messing with it. I guess we've gone a bit off topic, but thanks for pointing that out just the same!
"Analysts also argue that Apple sold millions of AT&T iPhone 4's last year and despite the media-furor, consumers did not line up at Apple Stores demanding refunds."
It's been obvious for some time now that functionality is NOT the reason iProducts are popular. iProducts are "cool" and "trendy", much in the same way a prada handbag is popular yet inferior in function to many cheaper alternatives.
So, given this fact, it makes sense that a major flaw did not elicit any serious repercussions from apple customers.
Screw Bill Gates. He got the billions by being one of the most notorious evils in silicon valley and now he's a hero for giving some of the money he stole back to the world? Better than him not doing it but it certainly doesn't elevate him to good guy status. If only hitler had given some money away sheeple would probably love him too.
If you weren't joking about that somehow being comparable to photoshop, then you may want to consider a photoshop trial or at least reading about the subject.
pixlr, piknik and the like are no more competition for photoshop than Schwinn is competition for Mercedes.
Why does everything have to be built on desktop apps dependent on the web or web browsers?
We've been doing desktops since dirt, and have it pretty well understood, reasonably well standardized
across multiple operating systems. The building blocks are well understood, highly developed and
well documented.
Mozilla makes web browsers. They're trying to create a dependence on their product like Microsoft did with windows years ago.
So why does it seem as if everybody wants to make us dependent on a 24/7 connection to the
web, and why does it seem everyone wants to turn the browser into the building block upon
which everything else depends?
And don't get me started on clouds!!!
What do we gain besides a huge dependence on things outside of our immediate control.
Did events in Egypt not teach us anything about putting every thing on the web and in
the cloud?
It's not what WE gain, it's what corporations gain in the form of DRM, and tracking your online activities so they can make more money.
There's nothing magical or new about any of this, companies will do what's in their best interest regardless of what's in the customer's best interest. Sometimes those two interests cross paths, and sometimes they don't. There's way too many uneducated consumers out there to do anything about it with methods other than cyberwarfare (DDOS etc) or government legislation. However, do not forget that the legislators are in the pockets of the companies in the first place and therefore aren't serving your interests either (again, unless your interests by chance happen to be the same as the corporations interests on a particular issue).
It would be nice if people didn't buy it and capcom got that message; however that isn't going to happen.
If the game sells well, capcom will hail it as a victory and this method will spread to other games quickly.
If the game doesn't sell well, capcom will likely attribute the lack of sales to things other than the DRM.
The #1 supercomputer in the world is one of those CUDA clusters in China. http://www.top500.org/system/10587 . At the moment, nVIDIA is where it's at for HPC as I understand it.
The U.S. Government already HAS the most powerful military on earth...
But yeah, let's go ahead and put millions or billions of dollars worth of military equipment someplace where there are no people to guard it. Great idea!!!
Why would broadcasters even care? Unless someone bothered to edit the broadcast before transmission (afaik slingbox and others don't automatically remove commercials for you), the viewer still gets spammed with commercials. Seems like good business for the broadcaster to me.

Whoops! This all important tidbit is not in the linked article, I was confusing it with the article I just read on BBC on the same subject: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-12429353
You must not have read the article. It was done by a body piercing shop because all local doctors had refused to implant it.

When you're the one (or perhaps your parent or child) dying painfully from cancer, you won't be saying that. Nice troll, though.
No wonder wow gold prices have been so high for the past few years. All the farmers have been preoccupied with less profitable information farming.

Hopefully my suggestion for a new .crap tld that can be forced upon websites without the owner's consent will be implemented.
In the end, it will turn out that the scineos created wikileaks knowing anonymous would attack and garner the attention of governments...

Sorry, only one voice per ISP at Slashdot today :)
