As some of you have speculated, there is ALWAYS something bigger and better. There are conventional bombs that currently do quite enough damage. But, why nuke someplace and risk fallout, etc.? Use some chemical/biological that is active for a few hours and leaves everything in tact but the people. I don't foresee the government wanting to give up some kind of trump card. Whether it is an SDI that already exists or what.

Keep watching, it'll be a while.

A few years ago, the engineering department I worked with (at an airlines) tested take-offs and landings with all kinds of consumer electronics running. Individually, collectively, etc. Nothing. Not a hiccup. No abnormal readings were picked up by any of the aircraft systems and none of the systems picked up any signal interference from the cabin. These tests were performed several times with the same results.

The FAA was notified of the testing (as required) and nothing was done.

After having worked with the FAA on many occasions, once they have something in their collective heads, it requires an act of Congress to get them to change their minds. They would rather be safe than sorry. For now, I think part of the whole electronics in flight (take-off/landing) has to do more with the possibility of the electronic object (computer or phone) becoming airborne in the cabin and hitting another passenger. As for phone/computer/etc. use during flight... that might be a combination between the FAAs reluctance to change and the airlines not wanting to incur additional costs that have an unknown as to when the payoff might be.

According to what has been stated, it will cost $100k to install and $10 per person to use. What is going to be the reliability of the system? Since it is a passenger convenience item, if it goes down before flight, you will be SOL even though you are expecting to use it. This will be interesting to watch.

My personal advice, from a life-long student... seriously, finish your BS. Get the MS in Computer Science. Get it at another institution as was stated. This will give you a greater depth of what is actually going on out there and a better perspective on things. I don't recommend the MBA or the MSIT at this time only because those degrees are more likely offered to a greater selection of students. Many of the non-traditional schools (re: online, etc.) offer MBAs and MSIT degrees. Get the MSCS and that will give you a greater edge. Now, if you want, after you graduate, during that first two or three years in a good job, what you do is find a decent university that offers an evening MBA program. That may cut into your social time some, but, knock the MBA out if you want, just get the MSCS first.

How do you know that by surrendering those notes that professor isn't going to use them for a book? Maybe she's looking for a student's view on economics and is hoping to find it in someone's notes? Plus you can actually feel out if it is some financially feasible for you (and your family, if applicable) to afford. Another thing to consider with a contract slot is that it could lead to a permanent position in which you would be able to negotiate terms of employment (work two to three days a week or x amount of hours). One simple way to point someone, especially those in the education field in the right direction, is, of course some simple, explanative web pages (RE: Wikis) on Open Source, Linux, etc. Another way, for those who might think certain web pages are not proof-positive enough, you can always tell them to go to their local MegaRetailChain Bookstore and check out the computer section and look at a few of the titles there. I also know that sometimes in education, a teacher is given a class to teach whether they have a background in it or not. You could ask them if they know anything aside Windows? First, since you, being overseas, will have limited ability to call Dell, give the relevant information to a family member that you can trust. Basically send them an e-mail telling them what has occurred. Remember, be as detailed as possible (dates, people talked to, etc.) Then, have them make the long grueling call to Dell. In the interim, contact Dell with your account information regarding your purchase and let met know that you are letting so-and-so friend/family member handle the account on your behalf as you are deployed overseas. Put together a nice business letter. Have someone in your unit give you some advice when you compose this letter (preferrably a SNCO or officer with some brains). Keep the letter simple and to the point. Let them know that you have not received the laptop as of current date. You have been charged for this. You will have your credit reverse the charges. In order to rectify the situation and to prevent any thefts, unless Dell can prove that it has been received by you, then they will need to send a unit to the following address . After that, the family member can then send it to you - definitely not wrapped in a laptop box. Just remember, depending on your deployment area,a laptop my be "inspected" or "held" to insure that it does not contain "contraband", even if new. You can also contact your local military PO folks and ask them how to proceed on that side. Also, if you do find yourself wanting to make a phone call, get someone from Dell on the phone. If they start giving you crap, go with asking for the supervisor. I say this because Dell started moving their call centers back to the US a couple of years ago. When you got through to them, you would deal with a level 1 who would bust their ass to try and help. It may have been tedious, but they could be bypassed by being firm and asking for a manager and they will pass you on to someone who can actually do something. If you wind up with someone with a difficult accent to understand, ask to be transferred to either someone else or another call center.
