I am using squid to block ads. I recently wrote this in response to someone about how I customized my squid to block different ads using the realtime url filtering through ACL. My original post is here.
My technique also blocks out hardcoded IP addresses. Or if I want, a block of hard coded IP addresses, too.
Very true. The installer *may* seem to suck, but because it works across all the platforms Debian supports, if you get one to install, you pretty much have learned it all for all the other platforms. I've installed Debian on a PowerPC 850, SPARCII (pizza box), and a variety of x86. For each install, it was almost the same. The only thing that was a bit 'fun' was the PowerPC 850 needed the original boot/bios partition on the HD. But after much FAQ hunting, I learned quite a bit about openfirm ware. (I named the box later on as macpenguin). I would have to say I had the most fun installing that box, and I think it was more enjoyable to learn about installing it than getting it up and running. Once I got passed the openfirmware, everything else looked exactly the same: the old blue screen installer.
So how long will we have to wait before someone sings this into an acoustical version that *maybe* will be a top 40 hit? Well, maybe not top 40, but a lyrical version would still be great.:-)
Your analysis of the application of the Fifth Amendment I believe is correct. At least I know that is what I would do if was faced with such a dilema.:-)

You could download something that fast, but do you have a storage unit fast enough to write that fast and large enough to all that pr0n? Hmmmm.... now if you can, that would be uber sweet:-)
My email account of nearly 10 years old receives about 300 email messages a day. I would have to say at least 90% of the messages that come in are SPAM. I guess I shouldn't have signed up for all that free crap back in the mid to late 90's. *sigh*.
I doubt anyone will actually see this besides you so I will post the meat of my squid.conf file. It doesn't block ALL garbage, as for it only blocks the garbage that I have encountered. In a way it is only as good as the person that *trained* it.
What I have done essentially is enabled the real time URL filtering access control list abilities of squid. It isn't clean but instead of plastering it with crazy regular expressions, I have attempted to keep the list in alphabetical order (well I need to sort it yet again...).
I also have a fairly massive host file that cover some sites that I am not blocking. Though I could technically incorporate the host file into the squid file but I haven't done that either... lol!
I also have installed a lame little web counter that gets updated (works >50%) when redirected from the deny info tags.
I am not aware of any system that prevent actual code from being downloaded if you are on a windows box. But on my squid proxy I have placed rules that essentially prevent these little buggers from reporting back and download their annoying contents. It's great to see these guys in action in the squid logs because you can tell exactly what is going on and what you need to block. I am working on putting together a documentation, but I have been lazy...:-/
Perhaps the/. community could get someone from the WWE to wear the T-shirt. I'd like to see Steve Jobs go after him. Well, maybe if they get a female wrestler to wear it....
When do we get to see a T-shirt version of the playfair application? I'd like to see Steve Jobs making people to stop wearing the T-shirts. Though I suppose he could maybe stop people from making them in the first place.
I agree. I constantly speak with people that Quake/CounterStrike via WiFi from Torgeson. Granted, they should be doing work, but I guess when they want to game, they REALLY want to game... *sigh*

Is it just me or does this sound like RIAA bought their own version of Carnivore?

I suspect the ACLU will not be very far behind.
These guys are still around? Wow... I remember back in 95-97 when there was a big mp3 war between APC and RNS. I still think RNS was way better :-)
There is always the option of going on Survivor, or try to be the next Apprentice. :-/
So what is going to happen when someone comes along with a thick black Sharpie Permanent Marker and mark the solar panel all black?

Raven went to Virginia Tech :-) Let's go Hokies! Even castrated turkies can be hackers, too. *gobble gooble*

IT Mechanics = Plumbers of the 21st centuries. :-)
$150/hour of work... hahaha
Special deals, I'll throw in a 4-port Linksys switch for free.
Perhaps we can all be proud when we get a D++ on our next quantum physics mid-term.

Oh man, flash backs of Dead of Alive!
The annoying application can be found here and use your favorite Bittorrent Client to retrieve.

How about implement a timebased port knocking system incorporated with GPG key and a rotating honey pot and listen for UDP?
Ugh, I am already confused by my own obscurity.
Me too! I still have ICQ99a installed... lol!
Quantum Bittorrent version 10.0 here we come!
Just go to your neighborhood Kinkos and print one out yourself and put it on your car. :-)
I do not recollect or recall such information at this present time.
