Our outgoing mail is filtered to protect the image of our company. Every e-mail that goes to the Internet represents an employee in a public forum. The people that manage these sorts of things understand the risk and occasionally blocking an e-mail refering to analysis as anal. (for example) is acceptable.
An e-mail from your company describing in great detail what you did to your boyfriend/girlfriend/hamster last night never sounds as good when read to you by your manager or hearing it on the evening news.
As a previous poster mentioned, you may use your free accounts to send whatever you want. That is much different than the same message coming from your company's domain. It isn't about freedom of speech... It's about conduct.
From the article: Finally, it was time to start writing some code. "We checked the first code pieces in around mid-December 1988," Lucovsky said, "and had a very basic system kind of booting on a simulator of the Intel i860 (which was codenamed "N-Ten") by January." In fact, this is where NT actually got its name, Lucovsky revealed, adding that the "new technology" moniker was added after the fact in a rare spurt of product marketing by the original NT team members. "Originally, we were targeting NT to the Intel i860, a RISC processor that was horribly behind schedule. Because we didn't have any i860 machines in-house to test on, we used an i860 simulator. That's why we called it NT, because it worked on the 'N-Ten.'"

A vaporware announcement is not an improved product.
And a misunderstanding of the term "vaporware" does not make for a compelling post. IE7 was announced, it will go beta, and it will be delivered. If Microsoft decides to cancel it and we remain at IE6 for the next few years, I'll stand corrected. Check back in 2008.
I've come to accept the/. bias by ignoring it and rarely read the comments. However, to mod the parent of this thread "4, Insightful" when it is FUD, and then mod the technically accurate responses as 2 or less is just ignorant.
Define "IE goes bad". Like most of us I manage all the PCs for my family members. It's only 10 or so but IE doesn't just "go bad" in that I've never had to do a repair. I also do things that would probably make Microsoft cringe: XPCreate; nLite; AutoPatch; SIF files; betas; etc.
The company I work for has over 50,000 Windows workstations and there is no magic corruption or fundamental flaw that only affects IE. I won't cover the same ground as the other responses and just ask the question that is just as ridiculous: "What is so wrong with Firefox that you need to uninstall and remove the directory and start over?" I ask because it has never happend to me or anyone I know (since the product hit 1.0... Betas don't count;). And I'm not talking about third party extensions or skins, who just woke up and Firefox needed to be uninstalled and removed?
I can't RTFA for the obvious reasons, but why include a 64-bit CPU when the system can only have 2GB of RAM? Also, anyone know what OS's are available?
When enough people have blocked enough pop-ups, sites will begin to disappear and we'll be left with fee based services only. Only when pop-up ads stop generating revenue will they go away (along with the site that served them).
Combine this with the IP address locator (http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?GetLocation ) and take your dream vacation from the comfort of your own !
For everyone who thinks this is OK, how about putting an extension cord out your window and publishing your address. My wife and I have a few things we need to recharge...;)
Also, if it isn't too much bother, disable WEP on your WiFi.
blah, blah, blah. Theorize all you want, but you are not allowed to read classified materials outdoors even while in a restricted area surrounded by a few miles of military base. Of course, this was an area where the weather was classified as well, so if you looked up and told your buddy it was sunny, you were disseminating potentially classified information.:)
"Secure OS's" are defined by the configuration. Some default installations are better than others, but if you remove all Windows boxes then you will have an Internet full of viruses and exploits that target non-Windows systems. If mom and pop can't run Windows, they'll run something else. And like their Windows box, it will be configured by someone else who may or may not know what they are doing.
My Hotmail account was upgraded to 250MB months ago. Ironically, at the same time they started blocking more SPAM than ever before. Where my 2MB account would fill up with SPAM in about three days, the 250MB container only receives a few SPAM messages a day.
It's too bad the article wasn't titled, "HP Announces Virus Throttler Program for Linux." I can just imagine the outpouring of indignation of HP throttling *my* box because *I* blah, blah, blah. Folks, we all share the bandwidth and we're all in it together. HP built a product that is only compatible on OS's that it has source code available? Well, boo hoo. If protection is their main motive then release it anyway and tout its features to get people to move to those OS's. IMHO, the Internet could do quite nicely if all the Windows machines dropped dead, but HP is in the business of selling to Corporate, which needs/has been damned to use (take your pic) Windows. Also, anyone remember when their printers *didn't* suck?
Forget that "Bill Gates is the devil" for a moment. When did he turn into a whiney little bitch and become the Joan Rivers of technology reviews? Sounds like someone was about to miss a deadline... so... write a hatchet job on MSWord. Not much else to say without being redundant, but what's next??? A JD article that Linux should be scrapped because he can't install and configure it properly? A long time ago JD went from "leading edge" to "laughing stock".
Due to regulatory and compliance requirements at my company, some users' mail (both inbound and outbound) is captured and archived for three years without any action required by the user. In fact, it happens before receipt and after sending so they *can't* get around it. For the rest of us, all mail on the server is purged after 90 days. Our tape backups are reused after five days and there is no offsite storage. Any deleted mail is really gone after five days! I love being in a meeting were we're asked to retrieve mail from 2002 and we inform them of our retention policy. Always an uncomfortable pause (on their side). So... keep what is required and get rid of the rest! Makes life easy for the admins and the lawyers have to look for some other way to make money.;)
Cool. Everybody hit his link now. He's probably on Mt. St. Helens. Watch out for the speeding Jetta on its way back to Seattle...

I'm gonna need lots of samples to make up my mind.
OMG!!! We went through this recently on a previous story. *Please* include the link to the boobies in your post! Thank you. ;)

:(
Seems that most of our greatest achievements have been by individuals. People working together usually create destruction.
Wikipedia is doomed.
