The App Store is the most important thing the iPhone has going for it. I have a Blackberry through work and enjoy using it (because it's free!), but getting apps is such a pain in the ass that the only thing I've installed is the Google package.
It would be nice if desktop OSes had an easy way to find and install new programs as well. Oh wait... BSD and Linux do have such a place! How has Apple not jumped on that?
Aside from a ridiculous audio message I think it's pretty funny. If you're downloading software from an unsecured and anonymous source and executing it on your computer what do you expect to happen? At least they didn't go hog wild and destroy the OS.
Yes, because it's so much more efficient for everyone to be using different versions of the software AND the document, unless you want to also deal with setting up a collaborative document system.
But opening a browser window and clicking a link - that's just too much effort.
Seems like the next step might be a charging / cleaning / maintenance station and a group of rovers. Maybe the station itself is a rolling rover. It would just creep along in a straight(ish) line and a series of rovers would scout the surrounding area, returning to the station for a dusting off and quick recharge periodically. Kind of like the Roomba vacuum that returns to a charging station automatically.
We've been dimpling golf balls for a long time. I've often wondered why they haven't done dimpling on race cars. Does it also create lift or something?
No shit - I had a new guy ask if he could get a better laptop than the one I assigned to him. I said no, these still a year or two in them before we get new ones. Less than a week later he brought it to me completely crushed.
"Yeah, I was putting stuff in my trunk, had the laptop bag behind me, and a truck ran over the whole thing and just took off."
Too bad for him it was covered under Dell Complete Care and they just happened to have an identical one in the refurb bin. More of the same, assface! He ended up quitting about a month later.
Fucking prima donnas.
In hindsight I should have gone CSI on him. Asked to see the bag, match the tread to his own tire. Send him a bill for $1,600.
A group of friends was sitting around talking about fantasies - the girls were all saying bear skin rugs in a cabin in the snowy mountains with a fire in the fireplace blah blah blah. The guys were talking about stuff like against the window of a room in a tall building looking over the city. And other such standard fantasies.
I said space. They all thought I was crazy. But mine is the best. And we all know I'm right.
If you want to kill yourself, fine, go right ahead. Your life, end it if you wish.
But why in the world would anyone commit suicide by hanging? There are plenty of other options to choose from. Especially when most suicidal hangings are done WRONG and end up taking loads more time to die than they had intended.
They achieve this run time with more efficient parts and... more battery! I wish other manufacturers (APPLE!) would take this approach. Another pound of battery in laptops, or a couple ounces in phones, and they'd hit a seriously useful run time. In most cases this would more than double their time between recharges.
So you're saying you'd rather have dinner with someone who spent a lot of time thinking about killing someone and never realized it was a bad idea, than someone who knee-jerk killed? I can see where it's appealing to not have loose cannons walking around, but what about smart-bombs?
Really I think they should be treated equally. If you kill someone intentionally we remove you from society, permanently. Maybe the people who's lives have been effected by a murder should be left to decide what becomes of murderers.
You are no better than him if you are advocating someone murder him. One murder does not justify another.
So what would you do with a murderer? I'm honestly curious, because I've heard a lot of ideas, most of which are terrible, but occasionally something that is interesting and possibly even feasible.
If it were my project, I'd put so much effort into getting the setup just so: trying a new format one day, scouring the planet for 78 cartridges, tweaking and automating my IT, that I'd probably only have maybe 1 or 2 songs digitized by now! I'm definitely glad he just got to it and didn't do it my way!
That's a really good point. And my lack of completed projects puts me in the same category as you.
If that were my project and I was putting that much work into the data creation I would want a lot more reliable hardware and backups. I'd also work to do more automation.
Are there some kind of secret agreements between hardware and software developers that causes them to both make products that require the other side to develop products that require the other side to... I'm sounding redundant.
I'm all for the progression of technology, but that doesn't mean 'more features without hardware usage efficiency'. The software being written these days is so bloaty that it requires hardware that hasn't even been produced yet.
And they're able to do that because people buy it. They're buying whiz-bang overpowered computers to run flashy OSes and bloated software just for the sake of the OS and software. It doesn't provide them with anything more than what they had before - just more bling.
Yes I enjoy a pretty interface and some animation on my screen. But after a couple weeks of that I just want it to do what I ask when I ask and quit showing me all that extra crap. I turn off all the animation and extra skinnings I can in everything I use - WinXP, OS X, Ubuntu. Why does a window need to animate opening? It just needs to open. Why does the menu bar need a gradient or transparency? It needs to be concise and legible.
It just doesn't make sense to me to use my computer's display as an accessory to my life, or decorate it like a room. It's like, ricing out a car. Why would you do that?
There is no single universal power solution for the world, or even a single country (of substantial size). The US will have to generate power locally from whatever is available. The plains will use wind, the coasts will use tidal, the mountains use dammed hydro, deserts can harness straight from the Sun. But the problem is that for the most part none of these are reliable or provide power at the right time. We can't just make renewable energy - we have to store it as well. Even for just a short period of time. An array of grand scale 'batteries' is one option. There could also be battery solutions at each usage location, like homes and businesses. A refrigerator sized chemical battery sitting next to the water heater, for example.
So, pumping water into a reservoir then pouring it back out is a region limited tool. But apparently (news to me) it works! And that's good news. There are plenty of other ways to do it, but this one also provides water pressure.
This seems very interesting and I hope it goes well for them. But I can't help but feel there are simpler solutions.
Any excess electricity inserted into the grid during the day could be used to run electric motors that turn pumps and push water up a hill (or tower) which we need anyway. During the night if power is needed simply run it back down the hill through the pumps which turn the electric motors and generate electricity for the grid. And water my lawn!
I realize there is quite a bit of efficiency loss in there, but it's stupid simple and it would work, as a supplemental power system.
I'm completely ok with toll access - it targets the people using the project. But if there are tolls there should be lower taxes.

I'll stick to the NES GI-Joe games, thank you.
but most of the time it was all seeders and no leechers.
Wow, life's a bitch.
My brother in law works for Britannica.
That's really all I have to add.
Have a nice day!

Ha. I like it (: But it needs a better recording.

And all this time I thought it was cool that Warcraft 3 was typable with only the left hand.

"I need a new Blackberry. I dropped mine."

You people can bitch about anything can't you? If I gave you five bucks would you bitch that five bucks won't even buy a burger anymore?
It's free music videos! Shut up and watch them!

Don't do it. It's stupid. Pick something else.

It doesn't matter how fast it is, we'll figure out ways to bring it to its knees.
HD Teleconference between multi-points 24/7 ... hell yeah! Oh wait, I can't get my mail.

...but I did watch a lot of Matlock when I was younger.
Columbo could kick Matlock's ass in a playground brawl.

Nelson Muntz, "Hah hah."
Good information. Thanks!
