I'm completely ok with toll access - it targets the people using the project. But if there are tolls there should be lower taxes.

  2. Application deployment on Competition For the App Store Is Mounting · · Score: 2, Insightful

The App Store is the most important thing the iPhone has going for it. I have a Blackberry through work and enjoy using it (because it's free!), but getting apps is such a pain in the ass that the only thing I've installed is the Google package.

It would be nice if desktop OSes had an easy way to find and install new programs as well. Oh wait ... BSD and Linux do have such a place! How has Apple not jumped on that?

Seems like the next step might be a charging / cleaning / maintenance station and a group of rovers. Maybe the station itself is a rolling rover. It would just creep along in a straight(ish) line and a series of rovers would scout the surrounding area, returning to the station for a dusting off and quick recharge periodically. Kind of like the Roomba vacuum that returns to a charging station automatically.

"Yeah, I was putting stuff in my trunk, had the laptop bag behind me, and a truck ran over the whole thing and just took off."

Too bad for him it was covered under Dell Complete Care and they just happened to have an identical one in the refurb bin. More of the same, assface! He ended up quitting about a month later.

    Fucking prima donnas.

In hindsight I should have gone CSI on him. Asked to see the bag, match the tread to his own tire. Send him a bill for $1,600.

Another pound of battery in laptops, or a couple ounces in phones, and they'd hit a seriously useful run time. In most cases this would more than double their time between recharges.

Really I think they should be treated equally. If you kill someone intentionally we remove you from society, permanently. Maybe the people who's lives have been effected by a murder should be left to decide what becomes of murderers.

I'm all for the progression of technology, but that doesn't mean 'more features without hardware usage efficiency'. The software being written these days is so bloaty that it requires hardware that hasn't even been produced yet.

And they're able to do that because people buy it. They're buying whiz-bang overpowered computers to run flashy OSes and bloated software just for the sake of the OS and software. It doesn't provide them with anything more than what they had before - just more bling.

Yes I enjoy a pretty interface and some animation on my screen. But after a couple weeks of that I just want it to do what I ask when I ask and quit showing me all that extra crap. I turn off all the animation and extra skinnings I can in everything I use - WinXP, OS X, Ubuntu. Why does a window need to animate opening? It just needs to open. Why does the menu bar need a gradient or transparency? It needs to be concise and legible.

It just doesn't make sense to me to use my computer's display as an accessory to my life, or decorate it like a room. It's like, ricing out a car. Why would you do that?

  24. Re:Potential energy on Using Sun's Energy to Split Water Means Solar Power All Night · · Score: 1

    Good information. Thanks!

There is no single universal power solution for the world, or even a single country (of substantial size). The US will have to generate power locally from whatever is available. The plains will use wind, the coasts will use tidal, the mountains use dammed hydro, deserts can harness straight from the Sun. But the problem is that for the most part none of these are reliable or provide power at the right time. We can't just make renewable energy - we have to store it as well. Even for just a short period of time. An array of grand scale 'batteries' is one option. There could also be battery solutions at each usage location, like homes and businesses. A refrigerator sized chemical battery sitting next to the water heater, for example.

So, pumping water into a reservoir then pouring it back out is a region limited tool. But apparently (news to me) it works! And that's good news. There are plenty of other ways to do it, but this one also provides water pressure.

  25. Potential energy on Using Sun's Energy to Split Water Means Solar Power All Night · · Score: 1

This seems very interesting and I hope it goes well for them. But I can't help but feel there are simpler solutions.

Any excess electricity inserted into the grid during the day could be used to run electric motors that turn pumps and push water up a hill (or tower) which we need anyway. During the night if power is needed simply run it back down the hill through the pumps which turn the electric motors and generate electricity for the grid. And water my lawn!

I realize there is quite a bit of efficiency loss in there, but it's stupid simple and it would work, as a supplemental power system.
