The timing of this announcement is very auspicious, as my roommate and I were talking just last night about starting a d20 Star Wars campaign :)

I'm interested to know how serious he is about stopping GPL violations made against other projects/products.

I know I'm not the only one who won't use Firefox over Mozilla due to its incredibly annoying download manager "feature". I haven't found any way of making it use the IE/Mozilla style one-window-per-download system.

If it wasn't for this, I'd probably give Firefox/Thunderbird another try as a replacement to the Mozilla Suite 1.7 that I currently use.

Well, this sucks. I originally read the topic as "Mozilla Foundation's Failure, and it sounds like I wasn't far off.

Firefox has a lot of "features" that I don't like, such as the terribly unfriendly download manager that you can't turn off (I prefer single windows per download, with prompts asking me what to do first, thanks!). I use Firefox at work because I only need an MSIE alternative, but at home I use the browser and mail/newsgroup components of Mozilla all the time (almost never close them in fact); I have to say that I prefer Mozilla in general.

Noone is going to pay for TV downloads when they can get them for free, and it's now too late to stop them from being available for free. Even if they could, you can still get them for free using an old TV and an antenna - so why pay for them?

What they (the TV networks) need to do is offer *free* downloads or streaming playback of shows that they make money off of in the same way as on broadcast: advertisements. Why can't they let companies buy ad space in streaming TV shows and then let viewers watch for free, just like with TV?

I don't know which is the worst:

    - The government and corporations taking advantage of the sheeple's ignorance and mass hysteria,
    - The media stoking the hysteria to keep people watching the news instead of pro wrestling and reality shows, or
    - The fact that people really are stupid enough to buy into all these scare tactics used by the government, corporations, and the news media to take advantage of us.

God, finally someone who sees Creative exactly the way I do. Nothing Creative has created has been special ever since they entered the PCI sound card market by buying Ensoniq and re-labeling their cards. Whatever you may be able to say in defense of their hardware, the fact still remains that their tech support and overall customer relations are a joke, as are their drivers and other supporting software. Absolutely the ONLY thing Creative has over anyone else is EAX, and EAX won't save Creative any more than Glide saved 3dfx or any more than nVidia's refusing to conform to the standard DirectX 9 shader rendering path will save it. Why the hell won't these companies learn that you can't retain dominance over their niche of the hardware market by strongarming software developers into using their proprietary technologies?

OpenAL is kind of a joke too, from the looks of it, as it seems to be largely controlled by nVidia and Creative.

I should mention that I have an Audigy 2, but that I use the kX Project drivers http://www.kxproject.com/ instead of the official Creative ones because I can have direct control over what's going on in the DSP on the card. If it wasn't for kX, I'd probably have an nForce motherboard like my roommate (AC3-encoded 5.1 output anyone?).

  23. no, No, NO! on Computer Gaming PCs Try To Stack Up To Consoles · · Score: 1

As I have said before, one of the things that sets PCs apart from console gaming is the fact that PCs have for a long time now been free of the limitations of low-resolution NTSC/PAL/S-Video/whatever display modes. Sure, it sounds good to play your favorite PC game on your 35" TV instead of your 19" monitor, but your 19" monitor is probably capable of at least 4 times the horizontal and vertical resolution and much higher framerates.

Maybe when CRTs are long gone and everyone watches sitcoms on plasma TVs and projectors (not to be confused with rear-projection TVs) will it be worth playing PC games on a TV instead of a monitor. Even most of those that I've seen can't do the 1280x960 res that my 17" Samsung can do at 85Hz without problems and with crystal clarity.

The exception to this is older games which run in 640x480 (or lower), which would be playable and actually tend to look rather nice on TVs due to the automatic full scene anti-aliasing they provide ;)
