How do you expect them to get the marketing and distribution costs by looking at the innards of the ipod?

  13. ReplayTV on Build Your Own DVR · · Score: 3, Insightful

Before building your own PC-DVR, you should take a long look at Tivo or ReplayTV.

For example. A 40GB ReplayTV unit is $99 + $299 activation. From there you can upgrade hard drive to a huge capacity for the cost of a bare drive. It takes 5 minutes to set up. The interface is serviceable. The GUI is adequate. Video quality is good. There are programs to get files from the Replay unit to your PC.

It just works. And for god sakes it is just TV. You might save some money but you gotta ask yourself if it is really worth the time and energy.

What would be cool is a fluorescent screen and a projector that uses light (UV?) outside the visible spectrum. Then the screen really could be visibly black but it would still glow when stimulated by the projector.

    Actually that would be idiotic.

    Consider:

The relative inefficiency of the fluorescence process.

The ongoing dimming of the fluorescence due to bleaching of the fluorophores.

The extra cost of using optics that high UV transmission.

The fact that UV damages DNA and can cause cancer.

The expense of a system than can excite multiple fluorophores of different colors (or were you thinking of a monochrome system?) ...

Looks like you have really thought through this "fluorescence projector" project.

I hope someone in the know could give us a better understanding on where the money goes in the production of a big time science journal such as "Nature" or "Science." Certainly we have many articles stating the costs to the readership (through library subscriptions) but how would less money going to the journals impact the quality of the journal?

Of course I am assuming here that open accessibility will reduce the flow of money to the journals, and I realize that this doesn't have to be the case. Are journals a low profit or high profit enterprise? Would fewer or more inexperienced editors produce an inferior journal?
