Aero though probably the most known feature of vista is not necessary for its day to day use. If your computer can't handle aero turn it off. Aero is not Vista, its a feature that requires a shit load of power from the computer. If your going to bash Vista at least make a comment on its drivers, its UAC, its old file system, its many other bugs and let downs.
Hell Aero doesn't even come with every version of vista. But when you turn it off you basically get a sp3 version of windows XP. I'm not a fan of Vista, I use Ubuntu on my desktop and XP on my laptop(had to downgrade from Vista). Every OS that I have upgraded to(windows based OS) has required some hardware changes, I mean windows 95/98 had a shit less requirements then XP.
have you tested this, because I sure have. I have used vista on a dual core machine with aero turned on and it would eat up cpu. I then turned it off an it was alot better. I got vista on my thinkpad t60 it's also a dual core machine, turns out that when I put xp onto the machine not only did it preform faster it also had a longer battery life. It also seems to me to be a big memory hog. Basically Vista wasn't ready, when it is I might put it back on my laptop.
Well first the US made a commitment by signing papers saying they would be apart of this organization(they helped found it). So this isn't played in the U.S. favor so what, go cry to your mom. Just because you want to be special and get special treatment from a group you helped found doesn't mean you should get it. There are legitimate reasons why this is wrong. You ban online gambling nation wide yet you allow local places like Las Vegas to have gambling? Thats like having an agreement to sell and buy from wallmart but then one day you decide no one from your company go to walmart to buy anything, but then going into walmart and start selling your hand made bags. You broke the original agreement and now trying to say well I should be able to sell your lame ass bags.
Fair enough, but I think you could at least understand what I was saying. I still can't figure out his point. Besides it's not like you have perfect grammar I mean you didn't capitalize the beginning of your sentence. I'm not a Nazi I don't freak out because someone can't spell right or has bad grammar but seriously I couldn't understand his point.
I am a Canadian. I can tell you right now that the "While critics will undoubtedly note that the majority of Canadians were unaware of net neutrality" is correct. I don't think this is a hot topic in the media and that is the main source of information on these kinds of things for people who are non technical. This would probably have the same results as if you did the survey in most places. I think what this does show the people who are fighting for their internet rights, is that we need to be making a better effort to make it an issue. Otherwise people are going to think their tubes are blocked and this is the only way to unblock the trucks of email going through them.
Even when I try to explain net neutrality to people allot of the time they either don't understand or don't care. The majority of people think they only use the computer for email. They might but allot of people I have worked with in the past don't realize what they do on a computer until it is gone.
My point is, is that it's not that Canadians are less technical there are alot of people in Canada that do read slashdot, but there are thousands more that don't know whats going on.
why on earth could you not run two networks at the plant? I bet a thumb drive would work wonders for transferring data to a terminal in the same room to send data to headquarters. Hell you could have someone do it hourly if you really wanted, but you probably only need it once a day when you say do a backup of that same data. As for running the equipment, I'm sure it's ran all internally anyways, why do you have to have that computer network connected to the outside world?
why not see if you could setup a microwave relay at the top of the hillside, I believe the initial cost to set it up is about 1500 or something like that. On the top of the hill you can setup a sat, and relay the info over the microwave dish. This would be a fairly fast solution. Though you would have to be able to have line of site to the sat and the microwave dish, permission to put it up, and a power source(maybe solar panels I don't know, if theres a cell tower up there already it might be easy if you got permission from the tel com company). A stable tall tree or pole would have to be used. But thats the best I could come up with. Other people have already mentioned other ideas I could think of.
Not only are they getting what they deserve they are also brining more and more un needed attention to this form of downloading and sending a message that it is okay. If they had just ignored the pirate bay a number of people would have thought it was wrong and ignored it. Now you have media attention saying they have been wronged and what they are doing is acceptable. Sometimes it's better if you just hide under a rock and if you really want to make a propaganda campaign. Now the pirate bay has been legitamized and has the backing of more people then it would have without all the attacks against them by record, and movie companies as well as the government.
on par with Digg? I think Slashdot is still better than Digg. The articles aren't always some top ten games of all time, top ten country albums of all time. I think you can get allot more technical responses from Slashdot users on average, and you don't get as much "I'm l33tz ur 5ux0rz" I do see good comments at both places, and good stories at both, but if it's a slow news day at Digg you can expect to see allot more useless drivel then on Slashdot. At least if you filter out one particular editor...
When I was still working at Dell(not to long ago) it was a big problem because we would load it onto the computers if you didn't order any processing software. There was nothing indicating that the software was trial software and when office 2007 first came out we would have someone get escalated to me about every other week because they couldn't get there files. Pretty much all of them thought it was pretty low.
I agree with your statement about rehabilitating shitbags but not socialpaths. But if you look at it like this, the shitbags are just shitbags, they know what they are doing and probably have an understanding of the crime and the punishment. I believe thats where 95% of all identity theifs fall. Then there are the sociopaths, these people probably have a few screws loose in the head. They don't know what they are doing and if they do they probably think it's quite proper to go about doing it. They are honestly sick. So we take the sick person and nuke em. That sounds like a good thing to do. 100 years from now if we haven't done something to whipe our selves out, I hope we look back at capital punshment. If I really think about it, it's like we are taking the sick people in our society and killing them on the basis that they are sick and couldn't help themselves.
Some will say that's how evolution works that's natural selection. The truth is we are suppose to be an intelligent race that is willing to grow and show emotions that races like Apes, Lions, Tigers and so on do not. Instead we haven't tried to figure out how the hell to deal with this problem in an acceptible way.
We over fill our prisons with shitbags, and we execute the sociopaths. Some say that capital punishment works as a deterant. I'm not a phycologist hell I'm not even sure if I spelt it right, but it seems you get 3 kinds of crime. Crimes of passion where you don't think about the end result(ex. you see your buddy sleeping with your wife/gf/mom what ever and you shoot the two of them). Capital punishment doesn't factor in. Then theres the people who lead a life of crime, these are the shitbags, they know what they are doing is wrong but they do it anyways, they think that capital punishment won't happen to them because they won't be caught. Then theres the sociopaths they are just going to do it, I don't think theres much that will stop them.
Honestly I don't see the point of capital punishment besides that it lessens the strain on prisons and gives the victims familys some kind of closure. We aren't even factoring in the number of innocent people that are wrongfully convicted. Hey it might be 1/100 it's still 1 too many and thats murder in the first.
To parent, sorry I replied this to your response, I think I just started rambling on my own point of view and after awhile I don't think I even came up with something that replied to yours. I just liked your idea of sociopaths/shitbags.
I would have thought they would send you a receipt. If you were running a business I'm sure you would want to keep track of that record. I'm sure some companies would require it.
What I think your getting at is that their is physical proof of evolution in many organizms and it would seem logical that we evolved as well most likely from proto-Neanderthal. There are other signs of evolution as observed by darwin in the birds that he studied, I also believe there was a case of butterflied on the industrial revolution that evovled to blend in more with buildings that were grey instead of white.
I'm not sure their is no creator you couldn't disprove it, or prove it so I will not change my mind. But there is proof of evolution in certain beings, so it would seem logical their is evolution. The question then becomes did we evolve from Neanderthal or not. Only a missing link would ever prove it to be true.
All even darwin said about the issue was "light will be thrown on the origin of man and his history," though I think being the first person to suggest human evolution would be something to not be too bold about.
I agree, I don't use Macs, mostly because I haven't purchased a new computer since bootcamp but even then I don't think I would get one. I like to build my own desktops(not even sure if thats cheaper anymore), and I like the think pads more than powerbooks.
Mac has a good product, it's solid and it works well, they want to keep a certain image, so they make high end machines. There is nothing wrong with that people are willing to spend that money on a Mac they should it's worth it. But I would guess that 70% of all home users don't need the power of a mac in their home. Most do word processing, pay bills, look up odd facts on google, and play flash games. My old 233Mhz IBM laptop will still do that without a problem. My parents are still using the old 1.0Ghz duron that I built for them when I was in collage.
Mac computers in my opinion are built more for a high end user like someone doing video editing, music editing, or any kind of editing, programing or even gaming if you want to boot windows or play WOW(not sure what other high end games play on OSX nativly). It does them very well at a competative price. Thats the image they need/want, and thats what Macs have always been to me.
Criticizing is one thing, bashing it is a whole other department. You could have a debate about religion and no one would have to be a jackass but at one point or anouther you get someone on either side saying, "Your not based in science your a twit", or "You are going to hell, smarten up".
Also I would like to point out that not all religions believe in creationalizm, and there are people that believe in evolution, and a creator that don't believe that the world was created 6,000 years ago. Just because someone believes in creation doesn't mean they are christian, islamic, jewish or what ever.
How the universe was created is still easily debatable. As we don't even know if normal physics could exist before it was created so who knows what happend. I like the idea that there are 100s of bubble universes and that when one collides you get a new one. Can pop, or shrink or expand. Don't know if that works with how the universe is suppose to be shaped(I think its curved like a horse shoe?) It seems interesting. But I wouldn't call someone stupid for not believing me I don't know its just a thought I like to believe in. Just like religion.
It would seem that the smarter thing to say would be to say "I don't know what happed I guess it could go that way or the other". Its called being agnostic. People tend to have strong faith in one thing or another and that's great. But I don't see why you have to go bashing anouther persons beliefs because you don't share them. Most people that are athiests today at one point had parents that believed in some sort of creationalizm. So other people(not the parent) that are saying it's brain washing don't seem to be quite logical.
Quote - "Most religions arn't today what they are suppose to be like, propigating hate. People screwed it up. People typically do that."
I don't understand I thought that if you didn't like the GPL v3 you could still use the older version. I thought v3 was for people who wanted something different like between a BSD and GPLv2?
The problem with DRM is that it isn't really standardized and not everyone uses it. You have an mp3 player, it doesn't use drm, you download content it doesn't work because the drm won't allow it to be played. Now if you had one that was capable of DRM and the DRM allowed you to copy it to an MP3 player you own thats not so bad. Thats kind of like the ipod itunes music store. But then you have DRM systems that aren't compatible and players that don't use it. So these players won't work with something like itunes or other music stores. Distribution then becomes limited, the customer can't use the content the way they would like, and it goes to hell. The problem isn't DRM in general, it could possibly work for some media but it isn't implemented correctly with a standard. If I could download say a movie and make x amount of copies to any media because they all allow for drm that would be nice. But if DRM becomes standardized does it mean that it was basicly like music on a CD is now? What I mean is can anyone trade it? I'm sure theres a way to limit DRM on p2p networks allowing for only fair use trade of music and videos. Of course someone would/will break it but I would hope that it would be enough to make the RIAA and MPAA calm down, and at least consider online distribution more freely.
I personally hope DRM fails, and the way its going it definatly will/should. DRM as it stands doesn't help disribution, it limits it. It doesn't give a person a better experiance it limits it. It doesn't do anything for anyone, DRM free music would be able to be used on any player, so distribution would be better, better distribution = profit. Profit = expansion and advancement this = better user experiance.
exactly, I have an ATI card, I promissed myself that I would never buy one because of the linux support. We'll I was doing some work for a couple years that required me to have windows installed. A buddy of mine convinced me to use ATI, I figured they have better drivers now for linux if I ever switch back it won't be a problem. We'll I switched back to linux a year after I was done the work and I regret ever spending the money on this ATI card. It worked nice in windows but even the propriatary drivers have a hard time using two monitors. It just doesn't work right. The NVidia drivers at least worked properly. I don't need a new video card I don't do that much with high end graphics, but I almost want to get an NVidia card because it sucks so freaking bad. The open source drivers are almost better, but they still don't work as good as nvidias.
Frankly throwing out your NVidia card what are you going to get? An intel card, I'm not sure how good the drivers are for that, but really NVidia seems to be the way to go, and just hope that the opensource project advances quickly(either for nvidia or ATI)
Well typically if you're going that route you have to look at the big picture. If rich wives don't really love their husband why is that? It's probably because they are not the best looking people and don't have the sizable organ they are looking for. So why did they get married and have sex with them in the first place. Well it's most likely because they are rich. Now how did they get rich? Well if you look at the parent we can see a correlation between being rich and being good at calculations. Hence you either have to be a pool boy or wealthy to get laid by some hot girl. Now personally I think most men are not pool boys, and eventually have to become pool men, in the end being rich will get you laid in a long run because even if your 80 and have a million bucks you can score a hot chick. Now if you're 80 and a pool boy you probably have 10 kids named Tom that have grandchildren all living in your house waiting for you to die so they can inherit your trailer.
So as to who wins in the scenario, the man with the mansion, who can get an 18 year old girlfriend at the age of 65. Also no one has stated that if you're good at math doesn't mean you don't have other benefits to your body.
Thats a lovely quote but I still am not sure this would have anything to do with Wal-Mart. Dell has been restructuring his company ever since he retook control. My guess is that this was part of that. I doubt that it would be laying off people in the call center support. As the amount of people that leave the call centers is about 30% a month so I don't know how you can cut 10% from that, unless your not hiring 10%. So this leaves operations like the IT department, HR, Managers, and the people that run the manufacturing lines. Now I know that Dell in the last few years has employed alot more managers than is fitting with the original Dell model. Now I could be wrong and you could be correct, but I've worked at Dell for 2 years, I hear things. Lots of the uppermanagment has been replaced in the few months since micheal took over. Maybe now they are just cutting out the fat. The whole restructuring from the start could have had to do with fitting with what Wal-Mart wanted. In the end I'm not too worried about my job its just the useless management in roundrock I suspect will be worried. The guys that remind me of Bill Lumbergh from office space.
A little off of topic but I wouldn't worry about a 10% cut hurting the tech support lines. Typically they are never at 100% to begin with if they did cut 10% of the tech support they may finally get up to 100% capacity as they would no longer have to fill those seats.
I highly doubt that Dell would work with Wall-Mart if they weren't going to make money off of it. Their model is giving them a profit, if Wal-Mart was going to cause them to cut back employees it wouldn't be a profitable enough venture for them why take it on. I'm sure this is the case with some companies, but Dell is making money, they have a way to get to consumers, if they didn't like the Wal-Mart deal they could target anouther company like best-buy. I'm sure Wal-Mart wants the Dell brand just as much as Dell wants their distribution.
Thats the thing most of what the scene calls good releases are not camra recordings, TS can sometimes be okay, but I think what hurts the industry more is the DVD releases that perviewers leak and such. I mean I love going to the movie, but if its not something I really really am excited about like the 300 or spider-man 3 or what ever and I can get a DVD release and watch it at home without the little kids yelling, I would prefer it.
Thats why I rent and buy a lot of dvds and wait for video release. I don't think camera recordings hurt the industry as much as leaks in their own security. I doubt that this legistlature will effect much, and I don't think it matters too much to people in general. I think it is a slippery slope I hope they don't start writing up bills for pirated music and such like in the states. That would scare me, I know alot of people that use P2P networks up here in Canada. I don't do that kind of thing...

Duke Nukem Forever is like Godwin's law for software. "When is it coming out?" "Just after Duke nukem Forever"
exactly, I have an ATI card, I promissed myself that I would never buy one because of the linux support.
