College educated people who come to USA to work really don't deserve that kind of attitude. They go there either because they like America enough or because they can't make decent living elsewhere and both causes are respectable.
The former reason is fine, but the latter, not so much. White relocating due to economic necessity is understandable, often people from other cultures do not seem to want to assimiliate to any degree. Note that I do not expect people to give up their heritage, but far too many times you see small enclaves of people who do not deem it necessary to interact with the locals. When in Rome..
I respect that you may think immigrant engineers are lowering your hourly rate and robbing you of the job you were entitled to, but please keep in mind that it's a sign of proper upbringing to value all people equally regardless of where they were born.
Proper upbrining? This sounds suspiciously pommie to me.. hmm... what's "proper"? (Yes, sorry, the pommie comment was in jest).
It's not about political correctness, it's about politeness and respect of other human beings who want the same thing as you do: to work and be respected for who they are, regardless of where they were born.
No, it is about political correctness. I don't have to respect you or ilke you, I have to tolerate you. If you earn my respect then we'll talk.
Don't tell me what I should think; if you try that in mixed company here in the states in person you may get your ass handed to you post-haste.
Now, onto the H1-B thing: I do believe it is used to drive down wages. For this reason, I think a new type of probationary visa that runs for a year should be used, and if the worker (in a LEGITIMATELY understaffed field) performs well, they should be offered citizenship, full stop. They either then accept US citizenship, or leave.
I am curious, do you believe Romney is not capable of helping the middle class and improving the economy solely because has always been rich?
Trying to identify with the middle class (as Romney appeared to attempt to do with the 'ugly car' remark) was disingenuous. In addition, the man made some bones by slicing and dicing companies and outsourcing jobs. Why should Joe Bob average trust this guy again? In addition, some people called him a "flip flopper".. I call him a blatant liar. Then again, they're all liars.
And don't even go the 'competitiveness' route.. we're competing with countries that have no respect for their people, and who will quite literally liquidate them for gain. Somehow it's okay that a woman goes blind in China at the age of 30 after soldering keyboards all day long so that we may buy them for seven dollars, but it's not okay to fly to Cuba.
As far as "getting tough" with China, I doubt that either Romney or Obama has the balls to call them on currency issues.
You know, every time I hear this, from people on both sides of the political spectrum, the very clear subtext is "... and anybody who disagrees with me is uneducated."
It was also possible with a slight tweak to run two in an SMP configuration with some quite cheap motherboards: a dual processor 300MHz Celeron overclocked to 450MHz beat pretty much anything else in terms of price/performance.
I had an Abit BP6 back in the day overclocked running Linux.. at the time I had a Sparc 20 and then a Sun Ultra 2 at work. The Abit board was great for a home workstation for those of us without the deep pockets for a RISC workstation in the den.
Simplicity, efficiency, and longevity. Slack hasn't changed all that much and gets the job done for some of us.
That being said, it is definitely not for everybody. If somebody's really in the "I wanna learn Linux" mode, Linux From Scratch might be a better choice.
My primary system at home for the last sixteen years: Slackware.
If you use it, and you love it, please buy a DVD or contribute if you can. I do.
Remember, Patrick isn't some big conglomerate screwing everybody out of money; he's just a good guy putting out an old school yet quality distro and trying to make a living. He's got a family too.
Those of us in Maricopa County can worry about our sheriff; the rest of the country can worry about theirs. It's a local elected office. I do not understand the national media attention.
As a former Phoenix resident, I have to say maybe it's because of things like this and this?
Sorry, but once you step over the line and nobody else is reigning it in, it becomes a federal problem.
Go buy a Sansa mp3 player and an iPod and use them. You won't be claiming that they are just another company making products that can easily be replaced anymore. I am not a fan of Apple's tactics, but their hardware is superior and their software is excellent. Their engineers do things right.
It depends.. do I want an iPod Shuffle that gets a modicum of sweat on it and then heats up and self destructs, or do I want a Linux-friendly cheap-o player (Sansa Clip 4GB) that has survived countless trips to the gym, trail runs, etc? I've had both; the iPod lasted approximately 45 days while the Sansa is a couple years old and still running. It supports playlists and.. tada.. plays music. Good enough.
Then again, I'm an engineer who drives a Subaru not for aesthetics but for performance (and my Subaru is really ugly, really fast, and is awesome in the snow). If you're into "purty" I can understand how the Sansa might not be your thing.
Make no mistake, I've got a Linux workstation on the desktop both at home and at work, and a MacBook for the road.. and I really do like my laptop.. but Apple aren't quite as fabulous as you make them out to be. Given the trend of the Retina Macbooks becoming more difficult to repair, I will say that my next machine will be a Lenovo running Linux. I'll take an 1100 dollar assault rig over 2400 bucks worth of unrepairable.
Granted, there are some good ones out there, but mostly we churn out people that are retarded without a GUI to know most of what they need to know to do their job.
I believe I read a blurb in Dr Dobbs about this.. in the 1980s. They were talking about the future of software engineering, and that CASE (computer-aided software engineering) technicians would be numerous.
You could probably apply this "tyrrany of the minority" rhetoric to the ACLU and the EFF.
So that's a pretty dangerous bit of propaganda to push there.
Indeed!
What gets me is that I work with educated people who cannot understand how I can be a member of the ACLU, the EFF, and the NRA.
It's called trying to keep the government in line!
Yeah... I happen to presume that taking a hand gun to the theater is idiotic but that is just my personal opinion... in fact, I think it says a lot about your culture (or personal insecurity) if you feel that you need to do this. Of course, you are entitle to disagree.
It seems to me that you fear taking personal responsibility for your own security. I do not know your nation of origin, but this is a typically European "nanny state" point of view. Over here the cops aren't for protection, they're to mop up the mess and conduct an investigation after the fact.
From the grandparent:
You are presuming that the owner of the gun is an idiot. Though it might be true in some cases, most of the people are responsible.
From you:
No, I cannot cite examples... it was a question (i.e., how... [sorry I forgot the question mark at the end]).
Can you provide examples to support your claim?
Here is a man that heard gunshots and ran towards them in an effort to help however he could. He did this without knowing the situation or who was in danger. Arriving on scene he recognized that the criminal was no longer a threat and provided assistance in restraining the assassin. Several things should be noted:
He did not draw a firearm and charge into an unknown situation. That would have added to the confusion, possibly leading to him being identified as a second gunman.
He was aware that there was a crowd and recognized the danger of hitting bystanders.
A person other than the assassin was in control of the firearm when Joe arrived. He did not misidentify the criminal and fire on an innocent.
He did not act as “judge, jury and executioner”.
He has stated (on the Fox and Friends interview) that he has no special training for such situations.
I'll tell you what I'm serious about: I'm fucking tired of the ageism bullshit in development and systems management. Having an undergrad already, I'm going to start a program at the local state university that allows for a BS in nursing to be completed by a prior degree holder in 16 months (doing all the science right now part time, like o-chem; the 16 months is almost all practicum), and then fast track into an MS in advance practice nursing. I'm looking into oncology, urology, and orthopedics.
In addition, some friends and I have opened a retail gun store.
I am tired of living for the code and the tech. It is time for me, for my mental health, to move on.. and for somebody else to take my place.
The former reason is fine, but the latter, not so much. Really? And who gets to draw the line, you? Somebody who thinks like you? Somebody you helped get elected? Not one of those 'other' assbags, right?
Wait.. WHAT!?!?
Oh dear.. for a moment I thought you meant 4chan. My Idiocracy was flaring up.
I'm picturing this confluence of side effects, obfuscated C, and monkey patching ending in some sort of miniature black hole that envelopes the Earth.
;)
Suck that, strangelets!
Fuck it. I'm about to punch through an MS in Comp Sci. What's it take to immigrate to Canada nowadays? You know, a nation that's rational? Sigh.

People like me have the intestinal fortitude to at least sign our assertions with a nick, Anonymous Coward.
Did you even read the second link? Abusing disabled folks? Seriously?

While I refuse to go to Walmart to get it, I found some at Krogers and it's incredibly tasty.

Exactly!
Reminds me of the stupidity of Bill Richardson with respect to Great Lakes water.
I don't know about you, but when I surf porn at my missile defense job I kick it old school.
Say what? Nike Ajax?
Sheeeit.. say WHAT? Nike Herc?
Pfftt.. I got your "Herc" right here! Nike Zeus?
How 'bout I Sprint with his homeboy Spartan.
Too bad neither of these were hit to kill and packed nukes.
Citation needed.

Read about Joe Zamudio for that.

Only in promiscuous mode, cause I'm a whore. ;)
