  1. Basic Statistics on Live to be 1000 Years Old? · · Score: 1

"If you are a reasonably risk-aware teenager today in an affluent, non-violent neighbourhood, you have a risk of dying in the next year of well under one in 1,000, which means that if you stayed that way forever you would have a 50/50 chance of living to over 1,000."

How this guy is a PhD is beyond me with this fundamental misapplication of basic applied statistics. And this article mentions nothing more than various "therapies" that need to be combined in order to reduce the effects of repeated cellular replication over time (also known as Senescence, or the "effects of aging"). As your cells replicate, telomeres, or sequences of repetitive DNA at the end of the chromosome that protect the genetic information inside the chromosome, grow shorter. If the telomere 'runs out', as would certainly be the case after a couple hundred years, chromosomal information would become corrupted (i.e. mutations) and subsequent cells would be irreperably damaged. Any article claiming to 'cure' aging would have to address the telomere issue first.

No - the HP iPods are identical in every way (including firewire) except they have an additional HP brandmark below the Apple brandmark, and have 4 times the warranty (1 year vs. 90 days) that Apple offers. Look:

Absolutely right. I just preordered one from buy.com using a 10% off coupon, giving me a new 40 gig iPod for $342 shipped. Plus it comes with an HP 1-year warranty instead of Apple's 90-day warranty. So $60 cheaper and 4 times the warranty is GOOD for us consumers...

Ditto - I just discovered ATK/Cook's Illustrated and its an EXTREMELY valuable resource. Especially given the theory/experimentation behind their recommended recipes (who else would try marinating a flank steak in yogurt?), they let you know WHY the recipe works, instead of just telling you what you need to do.

I live in Charlotte, NC and have had a DVR box for about 4 months now. While I agree it has less features than Tivo I also didn't have to pay $400 up front and $10/month. I don't need recommended programming as I already watch too much TV, so I'm not missing that feature. Instead it's $6.95/month AND it integrates seemlessly with the digital cable on-screen menu system, which I like.

Re: ff speed - the fastest setting fast forwards at about 24 sec intervals. Plenty fast to get through a commercial break during shows in about 4-5 seconds.

And the only channels you can't record are the "On-Demand" channels (i.e. HBO On-Demand, et al.) and ppv channels. You can still time-shift those, although it's thru AOL TW's data center (as opposed to your box's HD).

Overall I'm extremely happy with the DVR. Just can't wait for a critical mass to get one and finally see some hacks for the firewire/USB ports for PC so I can start saving more Family Guys and Daily Shows... ;)

Where in the article did it say that any of the above is enforced??

ANY extra work/life or stress-reduction benefits, offered by a company, especially in this economy, is a huge plus as far as I'm concerned.

And if you think yoga (or simply stretching for that matter) is "silly new-age clap-trap" you obviously have never tried it, because the mental (and physical) benefits are obvious even in the short term.

I have no idea why the poster would want to 'return my Radeon AIW card'. What the linked page doesn't mention, and what people need to consider, is the capacity for ANY PVR/PC card to have hardware mpeg decoding and encoding. I believe the ATI All in Wonder 9700 Pro has SOME hardware support, accounting for 10-20% performance "boost" (i.e. less resources used), but I don't believe there are any other cards on the market with this feature. Hauupauge is scheduled to roll one out in the future (the PVR-350 I think?). Also, another feature that the ATI card has that this doesn't is support for a second tuner, letting you watch one show while recording another, or pic-in-pic. And all the great software bundled with their AIW. So why exactly is the Media Center betteR?

  16. Re:Prices on DRM: How To Boil A Frog · · Score: 1

Artists can already sell mp3s on their own servers. And burn and sell their own CDs. Record companies aren't giant CD burning corporations - they're MARKETING and DISTRIBUTION and LOBBYING corporations. Granted, the distribution aspect of their business model is definitely going to change (thank god), but my point is that their primary function is marketing the work of their indentured servants, er uh, artists.

  19. Yet another reason... on Homogenized Music · · Score: 1

Add this article to the long list of why internet radio is FAR superior to broadcast/FM. And don't think payola is a thing of the past. MANY artists' songs see the light of day because of modified payola, which still amounts to labels indirectly paying stations (i.e. ClearChannel) for exposure. Example: Limp Bizkit. I'm also surprised there was no mention of ClearChannel's bullying tactics in getting artists to "agree" to play SFX (i.e. ClearChannel) sponsored tours, or else face the prospect of getting blacklisted from ClearChannel airplay.

Good NPR story on ClearChannel and its practices:

I think a great value adding feature would be a "Relevance Score" which would allow the end user to discern between say, the Production Designer's or Director of Photography's commentary and Joe Schmoe's commentary for a particular movie. Someone on set of the movie during production would rate a between a 5 (Production Assistant) and 10 (Producer, Director), while those not related to the production would score less.

Gateway (I know, I know) made a PC with a 36" monitor, wireless inputs, Boston Acoustics Dolby 5.1 SS back in 1997-1999. It was called the Destination. You can still find the monitors on Ebay. I have one, with CD-RW and a cable modem. Best of all, though, it has the multimedia software you described that unites the interface for my cable, VCR, & CD changer thru one menu program. It's the closest thing I've seen of REAL convergence yet.

  23. The REAL Convergence on The PC As Theater: THX comes to the PC · · Score: 1

I don't know if anyone remembers the (now defunct) Gateway Destination systems, but I have one. This is THE most "convergent" system I've seen. It is basically a 300 Mhz P2 with 36" monitor(800x600 max resolution) and Boston Acoustics DigitalTheater 6000 Dolby 5.1 Surround System, and a proprietary hardware/software combo consisting of 3 RCA inputs and outputs in the back (for my CD changer, cable and VCR), and (somewhat buggy) multimedia software. An article from Stereophile (7/98) describes it here. I plan to upgrade to an all new system, with a HDTV projector. But adequate sound output (like the BA I have now) was always an issue. Hopefully this little announcement will spark some interest in audio manufacturers.
