As much as I agree that this isnt the right way to fight this battle there is a a logic difference in the 2 types of "censorship"

    1) the ISP is protecting themselves from a group of ppl that want to "hack" any machine in search of copyrighted material, they have no responsibility for the stability of the machines they search.

    2) RIAA is forcing ppl to shutdown websites that they dont agree with (most recent being the chinese web-site of _links_, there were no mp3s they were links) RIAA doesnt get the traffic, they dont lose bandwidth resources, their systems arent gettings unauthorized/unwelcome connections

All of this over Britney_Spears_Song_of_the_Week.mp3, as much as I dont like pirating songs, (i have _three_ mp3s I dont own the cds for, and I will buy the singles the next time I am near a music store)I think abitrary connections, with risk of data loss (and other stuff) is unacceptable.

this is like putting up a brick wall on the end of everyones driveway (at the risk of it falling over and crushing a car) to stop drunk drivers

most (all ) intel serverboards support serial (i know its not AMD but hey, i dont make all the choices) and if you have windows you can just call back to vnc when the logon screen comes up (you can do that right, i remeber someone saying that you cant run stuff while loggin it ... but i never needed to find out)

Many of the examples listed in the parent seems clear to me whats 'ok' and 'wrong' blasphemy words are 'ok' but burning down a church is arsen.

violence (images of real-life ritual mass murder it seems to me that murder is already covered as wrong with our current laws but if the video is leaked out to the media it is 'sometimes' aired. We already see shows about polices chases gone wrong (and etc) on TLC (the learning channel) where it ends in a shooting, you see 4-5 officers shooting a guy until he is dead, and everything is in plain sight. or a camera at a 7-11 tapes a robbery where someone gets beaten, that gets a lot of air time,

Real-life rape vids once again someone is hurt in the process of this, so i just i think its 'wrong'

Nazi memorabilia in Germany Noone is hurt when owning a plate, however hunting down jews is 'wrong'

how to build a nulcear bomb in twelve easy steps ahh this is prolly my favorite, there is nothing wrong with reading these docs, however attempting to create (and definatly using) said items are illegal, I have read 'anarchist's cookbook' a dozen of so times but i have never created anything from those books that i couldn't buy in a store

basically we just have to concider the ppl involved if someone is hurt, physically, mentally, emotionly (yes i guess sticks and stones may not be complete) and the person cant get out of the situation then its wrong, but if you dont like something and all you have to do is close a browser window or just walk out of a room to make everything ok again then let it be.
I am not saying if you walk into a room where someone is getting beat up just walk again, because (s)he (the victim) prolly doesnt want to be there either and that would make it wrong.

however being able to ssh into any box and typing export DISPLAY=my_local_box:0.0 and then being able to run all the the remote Xapps on my box is is one of the greatest features on the planet.

if you want to increase the speed of your X its not replacing X, its replacing your KDE and gnome with fvwm2 (which is what i use) or even blackbox.
i see all these comments about enlightenment and KDE and gnome ( although i use GTK, not gnomelibs, _GTK_ for my devel and most usable apps) i shudder, because they are so slow, and then the same ppl complain about X, thats just wrong. if you want a fast system, a recommend the following:
    • replace KDE/enlightenment/gnome with fvwm/blackbox/twm
    • replace staroffice with abiword/gnumeric
    • replace kmail with mutt (read the help mutt as more features)
    • change your 14meg wallpaper with xsetroot -solid black

granted transparent video will have some important uses in editing, however what has to ask how is it done in irix platforms now, is there a hardware solution that we can not compete against because its just so great?

i needed to reboot my box do to hardware issues. nothing serious. then when i when to start X i found my backspace and delete werent working (guys on irc had a riot with my typing, mad props to #clan_gun :) ) the keyboard maps for X were gone.

so i wanted to look at the problem, noticed x3 and x4 installed on my box ( first time i used dselect in a while). i thought to my self "what a great time to upgrade to x4" i removed x3 and added the extra x4 that was missing. shut down X when to restart, startx was missing.

i removed EVERYTHING x related and reinstalled x4 debs. now everything seems fine.

removed mesa conficts and restarted X couldnt start X.... su segfaulted. reboot worked

ran blender system locked (harshly) manually needed to run fsck. /var/lib/dpkg/available was missing touched it and continued

changed xf86config-4 back to nv from nvidia x wouldnt restart. removed x4 installed x4 everything khosher ( i am sure i only needed to remove /usr/X11/lib/modules/extension/*glx* but i reinstalled anyways)
