Not so fast.. As a former programmer turned project manager (They outsourced my job to India, and kept me around to work with them) I've got a little bit of knowledge. We use a company called TSI (one of Ross Perot's companies). They are very good, reliable, and they accommodate us by making sure we have a 6 hour overlap in or day (The team in India works 3pm - 1am every day).

And yes... cost was our biggest motivator. I'm not even bitter about it, it makes a hell of a lot of financial sense. Keep the people here that you trust working directly with your clients (I work for a consulting firm) and outsource your non-client facing roles as much as possible.

    Today's Wininfo by Paul Thurott:

Linux Rated Less Secure than Windows
When Microsoft announced last fall that the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) had awarded Windows 2000 the highest possible grade in the Common Criteria (CC) security certification, open-source advocates downplayed the honor as insignificant and unrelated to real-world security analysis. This week, however, ISO also awarded Linux the CC security certification, and as one might expect, the open-source community greeted the announcement with cheers. There's just one catch: Linux got a lower security rating than Win2K did last year.
ISO granted Linux a "low to moderate" security rating, whereas Win2K received a "moderate to high" security rating. According to people close to the certification process, ISO tested Linux for higher security ratings but the open-source solution achieved only the "low to moderate" rating.
Further dampening the celebration is news that most Linux installations didn't receive the certification. Sponsored by a $500,000 fee that IBM paid, the certification applies only to SuSE Linux and then only when that product is installed on certain IBM hardware. Still, the certification is an important first step for Linux, which is trying to position itself as a viable alternative to Windows in various situations. Microsoft has made significant security-related improvements to Windows since the company launched its Trustworthy Computing initiative a year and a half ago.

This is basically my experiance. This isn't specific to windows apps. I have just as many problems with random shareware/freeware apps on my Linux machine as I do my XP machine. Just everytime something happens in windows, it prompts you to send a log in to Microsoft via windows error reporting. Additionally, I think this quote may be misleading as to what Gates actually said. As I mentioned in another post I would love to see the original transcript of this speach. The reporter glossed over this 5% statistic in the NY times article, and Paul Thurott who covered the same speech made no mention of it. Paul is typically very critical of Microsoft and I would think he would jump all over a statistic like that if there was any merit any it. The fact is Windows got a bad rap for stability back in the 9X releases, but thats just not the case anymore. I restart my workstation maybe 1 or 2 times a month, and I have 2k servers that have uptimes of nearly 2 years (not connected to any external network of any kind so no need to patches/service packs).

I think the reporter intentionaly mislead readers. Notice the article has like 2 sentances even mentioning the crash statistics. Paul Thurott covered the same speech and he had _NO_ mention of these statistics and he is usually very critical of Microsoft. I would be very interested to see a transcript of the original speeach to see exactly what Gates said to get this in context.

I have a win2k server machine running here that is running a domain controller and file serving for a telephony application. This machine is not connected to a routable network of any kind, and it is only connected to the telephony boxes (just dos boxes with voice cards in them). This machine hasn't been restarted in nearly 2 years. Tell me that isn't reliable!

Obviously in normal enviroments you will reboot more frequently to apply patches/service packs, but when the machine is in a isolated enviroment like this there is no need.

  11. skewed statistics. on Gates Provides Windows Crash Statistic · · Score: 5, Informative

The 5% number is just skewed heavily by the fact that any poorly written app that crashes is counted. Whenever an app crashes the windows error reporting system fires off a log to microsoft regarding the crash. I bet 90%+ of these crashes have nothing to do with windows.

Cheating: This is why Xbox live blocks the mod chip, the game has to be signed by Microsoft, if its not it can't be played. You can't cheat, if you can't run code Microsoft didn't sign, its that simple. There is this functionality to counter-strike and probably other PC games, but its rare to see a server admin enforcing it.
