People are seeming to forget the videos are distributed to play on an ipod and the cmoputer. The ipod hads some limitations on bit rates and image quality that are much lower than on the computer. I think the movies and TV shows are encoded to be the best quality the ipod can put out (640x480 at some max bit rate...)
Its an old mac bahing troll post that used to appear in every mac story, and was completely inaccurate. the author just switched some of the names.....
What I find a little scary is now its moded interesting...
The list seems pretty large, even ps one games. One wonders how bad the "some issues" one are and if they'll improve the virtual ps1/2 emulation.

The content providers should wake up. Nothing irritates a consumer more than buying something like a DVD and having to jump through hoops to get it play on ones ipod/laptop/ car cd-mp3 player. specially when those pirating the same stuff don't have these problems.
There was a paper that didn't require ink. The old fax machine used spools of this paper called "fax paper" which was a paper that didn't require ink. The fax machine used heat to create an image. I think some checkout printers use this paper as well.
It could erase too just leave in the sun.. (I had a receipt go blank on me because it was in the sun too long). Of course not reusable.
In general, people just want to be able to use plain paper with their printers.
All that cursing. Buy A MS XBOX 360, because we all know they have YOUR best intest in mind (sarcasm). Just make sure you buy a ZUNE and MS VISTA ULTIMATE to make sure they all work together! And be sure not to forget to subscribe to xbox LIVE at 50$+/year (6 years = 300$!).
You should probably just buy a wii a ps2 or wait a year or two. The PS2 is still a viable platform unlike xbox1 or gamecube.
The PS3 is expensive because blu-ray drives are expensive.
I'm playing that game right now. When I first heard about Okami I was confused about what it was about.
It makes a lot more sense once you start playing, its a lot of fun and really stunning to look at and has a different feel from almost any game. The fact you do things by drawing them is neat different. The story is good enough to keep things moving and the translations where excellent, adding some humor among other things.
Wasn't that a circut city dvd that you had to attach to your phone to authorize....
I'd forgetten.....
The problem to some extent is that consumers still want this stuff. When I get a HDTV, I'll be torn. I'd like High Def, but I'd also like to take my videos with me on my computer (DVD rips).
Hopefully blu-ray will include a mini version on the disk, or those hd-dvd/regular dvd disk will be popular.
I've been thinking about this. Why are consumer electronics companies so eager to stick DRM on products (typically they dislike it, it ads to cost and slows consumer adoption).
Because the content companies (Motion Picture folks) have to buy in. If there was just one format the consumer electronic companies could say, high def disk, take it or leave it. However since there are two formats the Studios can choose the format the offers the most protection. In a way because of the format war the studios got to say "Add DRM" or we'll go with the competeing HD format here.
It doesn't help that sony owns electronics and content, and the content part is clearly running the company.
This seems odd, but I was looking up some css, and javascript information. I couldn't find it on google, but I figured I'd search through digg. It worked. I've done this a couple times.
Like the old yahoo and about.com, sometimes user selected content is better. Its different though because you depend on the description given to the article by the person submitting it.
That these cracks and counter DRM attempts cause enough compatability problems that the Consumer electronics industry gives up on DRM, and the studios would have to follow if they wanted there content sold at hi def prices....
One can dream that they'll come to there senses. There is nothing more annoying than petty restrictions on the content you buy..
Why shouldn't I be able to watch my dvd/hd movie on my ipod OR computer OR TV. This is getting stupid. The thing is the studios are unified in there stance by the MPAA, maybe consumers should start lobbying or just stop buying..
The iphone is a play against the "merging" of phone and ipods. Thats all. Its a long term play, as they expect to get the price down and more service providers over the years.
I love the way all pundits are smarter than jobs, yet the company's track record is amazing (I'm a stock holder since the 90s).
For design help, I used to us "the non-designers design book" by robin williams. Her books are quite good (amazon has a bunch). The help with design in general.
That and spend some time looking at designs. Why they work/dont.
Its more complex than everyone makes it seem. DRM is annoying and is getting more so (my itunes purchase won't play in my car cd mp3 player without jumping through hoops). DVDs are adding more copy protections etc. Nothing more annoying than having to jump through more hoops to get the stuff you paid good money for to play on the device of your choosing.
and bootlegs are everywhere. Maybe if they didn't charge close to 20$(in Mexico) a CD people would be more apt to buy them legit. Its completely out of control when ps games are like 3$ US and 2-3 movies per DVD is common. This is such a small scale compared to the bootlegging on the internet (although I'd bet a lot of these things are downloaded before sold).
But being the good consumers/capitalist we're trained to look for as cheap as possible, more so than thinking about all the people who worked on the media who need jobs and a paycheck. Ultimately if it gets bad enough look for much less variety in what gets released.
I understand what DRM is trying to do, but ultimately people will want the format that is cheaper and more flexible. Basic economics indicate they'll have to step up enforcement of illegal activity, there is no economic advantage to being honest and supporting what you like in todays society.
seeing as ps2 games where going for 200->300 peso (2-3$)in mexico right next to the PC software, I'd say piracy is alive and well.
I had my doubts but after traveling abroad a lot this year (armenia and central america), I'd say piracy is actually a more significant concern than I'd previously though.
I thought about one of these players. Ultimately for me I'm sticking with DVD, mostly because I can rip to watch on my computer when I travel (although they are making that more diffictult, sigh...). I can't watch those high def disks on my computer.
Now if blu-ray put a "portable" version on the disc I could take with me, like steve jobs suggested....
I was in Circutcity (Inserty funny name parody here), looking for a game for the nieces. The ps2 game shelf was gutted. But in there infinite wisdom the managment decided to stack xbox360 consolse on the floor in front of the games (maybe to tempt someone?).
Price is still a big factor in games, and there are still good games cheap for the last generation consoles.
My goodness people. Here we have a fairly inovative new designed "cell" processor designed by IBM toshiba and Sony. Of course its complexity more difficult to get run at full efficency, but the geek in me thinks the arcitecture is interesting. The compiler optimizations will come with time, like the PS2 whos games did end up looking significantly better over time.
Since Apple went x86 and Itanium sank, there are very few companies even trying anything new in the cpu world. My hats off to them and I hope it works out well.

PS2 is cheap, the games are cheaper. The games still lookspretty good. Did I mention its cheap and fun.
The new systems are pretty much a rehash of the old, with better graphics. (excepting the wii)
I'm running the latest and greatest apple OS on dual g4 1 ghz (4-5 years old). It runs pretty well too.
What was that about throwing equipment away?
Its kind of an unfair comparison as windows supports way more configurations but I can't let statments like that go....
Wasn't that a circut city dvd that you had to attach to your phone to authorize....
