Dont forget the biggest dependency of all--you need a JVM to run Java. That still needs to be packeaged like any other app.
It needs to be packaged ONCE, and then it will be fine for all future Java applications.
Let me know when there is a GPL-compatible JVM, available in an LSB-compliant package that will install and run cross-distro
GPL is important in this situation, why ? You are referring to a licensing issue, not a technical one. Also Java is available as an RPM or as a self executable so it should install and run cross platform without any problem. LSB or no LSB.
and wont break if you use a different X server or non-standard hardware...then we'll talk.
Can you please explain where different Xserver/hardware combinations have affected Java apps. Or are you just trolling ?
As a matter of fact, when I let iTMS manage my music files, at it did was hose up a bunch of ID3 tags and add artist names onto the beginning of each track when the directory structure is already organized by artist and album. That's hardly a superior management system.
Maybe you should RTFM. When you first use the program it asks you if you want to let iTunes 'organise' your songs for you. Just click 'no'. Simple.
For the most part, the justification for the iPod's price is the extra features it supports, like iTMS. If you're not using it, then the price seems all the more absurd.
The justification for the iPods price is the fact that Apple has spent a hell of a lot on R&D to develop the damn thing. And from an engineering point of view much more difficult to develop then some of the other MP3 players which have vastly less intuitive UIs.
What does iTMS have to do with the price of iPod. Doesn't the tiny profit Apple make on iTMS imply it is covering its own costs ? i.e. not affecting the cost of iPods.
I think I hit on the rabid Apple fanboy nerve.;)
Typical loser attitude. Can't handle an argument so drops back to personal, troll attacks. Two can play that at game.. MMOG boy lol.
I can understand the iPod not being able to play WMA/OGG/FLAC/etc. for now due to limited CPU power (even though lots of other MP3 players can do it just fine), but I don't see any reason why iTunes shouldn't be able to play them.
Just for the record:
- iPod does play WMA just not that DRM crap. - Who uses OGG again ? - Apple has equivalent for FLAC.. AAC Lossless Encoding. So no reason to support it.
With Mac's the prices are pretty much fixed by Mac, good profit margins are in there and you only get that which they release... you're not benefiting from competition in that segment, you're not getting value for money.
Well that all depends on how much the priviledge of using OSX is worth to you.
No real world cases of viruses, spyware and the increased productivity that OSX provides is worth the little extra Macs cost.
I'm a little bit dissapointed in you Greg.. your blog is generally pretty good, I don't know why your so off with this post.
HP just proved it does understand basic branding. You just showed you don't understand basic sales/marketing. Ever heard of demographics? Or channels? HP has a) completely different set of users.. and b) has completely different channels to Apple. So explain why HP isnt going to make a little bit of money out of this deal and increase their brand by having the coolest/best music solution associated with it ?
HP just told us it does listen to its customers. Sorry the onus is on you to produce research showing existing HP customers wouldn't buy an iPod. Remember HP customers are in a different demographic to current iPod buyers. They are generally people for whom price is a huge factor, don't have as much of a passion for computers and generally are normal, everyday folk. They won't know what an iPod is, but they will happy to pay a little extra if one is bundled with the new HP computer. All HP cares about is bundling something good so THEIR brand doesn't decrease in value. And all HP users care about is having their computing solution work well for them. iPod+iTunes+HP computers seems like a good fit to me.
Finally, HP is broadcasting the message that it is intelligent enough not to try to compete in every market. Remember HP is still mainly a printing+imaging company. Now they are trying to get into consumer electronics. Unfortunately they DON'T have a brand within this market place. Most people would not be receptive to the idea of ditching their Sony TV and buying a HP one. So reselling iPod+iTunes is a very smart move as it is clearly the best solution out there and will help link the HP name to quality, easy of use and elegance within the consumer electronics space. This will in turn help them sell more TVs or whatever Carly comes up with during Big Bang 3.
The clearest branding message from the hPod? That HP IS the solutions leader and companies like Dell will be the followers as their MP3 players hopelessly fail againt the iPod+iTunes.
I'm interesting in HOW he's able to do this. I mean, is it a clause that SOLELY allows political spam, or is he exploiting a loophole, as a previous poster pointed out, about pre-existing business relationships. If the former is true, then its very amusing how these politicans make "backdoors" for themselves in law.
He is able to do this because of a "so called" loophole in the anti spam law that allows political parties, not for profit and charity organisations to send unsolicited emails.
On a side note its amazing how much the medical/software industries are alike wrt to patents. Too many 'obvious' or fundamental concepts are allowed to be patented, thus making it very difficult for progress to continue. And with medical/software, a lot of progress demands priori knowledge to be available.
Back on topic.. the role of patents are a big issue at the moment in Australia as we decide whether to a) sign the FTA with US unconditionally, b) don't sign or the more likely c) sign but with conditions. One of these conditions is that drug companies should not be allowed to sue generic drug manafacturers for patent infringement without very good reason.
Questions maybe some people can answer:
1) Is there a strong likelihood of drug companies not continuing to invest in drug R&D if they are not allowed to maintain a monopoly for some period.
2) Do the major 5 drug companies develop the most life saving drugs or are they mainly nice-to-have (but profitable) ones like Viagra.
Let's start simple: the iTunes Music Store is not a good value for customers.
Right. So do tell me what is the best 'value for money' solution that allows you to from your armchair instantly download songs from a range of bands and burn your own custom CD. Or put it seamelessly on a superb digital device.
That's less than the $16 store price, but used CDs at Amazon or ebay cost $5
You complain about artists not getting any money then advocate buying used CDs. WTF? Buying a used CD means the artist gets no extra money. At least with iTMS they are getting something.
And you don't have to deal with restrictions on how you use it.
Sorry what was that.. Velvet Revolver, chart topper with DRM. Hmm. Sounds like restrictions to me. What, more to come.. how interesting! You keep buying those CDs.. I'm sure those "experiments" won't make your ripping difficult at all.
Apple takes a 35% cut from every song and every album sold, a huge amount considering how little they have to do.
Clearly your not a developer as I am sure most people would appreciate there is some cost in delivering a high quality, high availability, high traffic web infrastructure. Costs that come to mind include salaries, importing of CDs/cover art, creation of 30-second previews, big iron servers, networking. Oh and the odd 400 TB of traffic (100 mil songs x approx 4 MB each)
Until the musician "recoups" these costs, when you buy an iTunes song, the label gives them nothing.
And this is Apple's fault why ? It is the fault of the musician if they signed a contract with a music label and didn't like the terms. That was their choice.
In Australia right now we have a great band, John Butler Trio who has the number one CD released under their own, independant label. They get to keep the full 65%. Remember being with a label doesn't guarentee success and vice versa.
Because it's the exact same deal that artists have always gotten from the big five record companies.
Why would you think it would be otherwise ? Oh wait you thought just because its Apple, the labels would offer new contracts with bigger cuts to all of their artists. What world are you living in ?
But when Apple supports and profits from an obviously unfair system, while telling customers that it's "fair to the artists", they are just as guilty.
Of course its "fair".. until now there has been NO alternative. Its not a great deal for artists by and means, but at least they get something. Before people who wanted internet delivered music, had no choice but to turn to Kazza and others of the same ilk.
Thanks to peer to peer filesharing, we finally have a chance to break the major record label system
On one hand you talk about the rights of the artists on the other you talk up pirating songs. Which side of the fence ARE you on ? Or at the end of the day do all you really care about is justifying your pirating ways. Now that's something to feel guilty about.
In the end, there's 100 million reasons why you are full of shit and blaming Apple for what is so clearly an issue between the label and the artist is just being disingenious.
I've always found an uptime of more than a few months tends to mean that sysadmin skills are seriously lacking.
:)
Interesting
I gave up modding for this.

.. seriously ? Microsoft Word, Open Office umm .. im stretching here.

How many word processors are out there
How many music players are there
How many digital music players are there
Yeh REAL good comparison. Idiot.

Clearly the first note .. will be:
FN!!!!!!
Don't copy other people's opinions; listen to both sides of the story and make your own.
.. in Australia and the US I'm guessing, the major media sources have not been providing a balanced coverage.
Well that's the problem now isn't it
So I'm glad this movie came out to at least offer a different perspective on the same issues.
With everything like this, THE TRUTH LIES SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE.
Haha Windows sucks for umm, well everything LOL!!11
Two words:
Armour Alley
Like all great games: simple to get into, difficult to master.
Because the quality of those FM transmitters isnt the best.
.. if its not streaming OGG it just ain't cutting the mustard.
And I'm sure as you know all Slashdot readers have $100K stereo equipment which is too high end for crappy MP3, AAC or FM transmitters.
So I'm sorry
Songs bought from iTMS can only be played on your stereo using Airport Express.
So I'm happy to wait the three weeks until it arrives, as iTMS + Airport Express + Bluetooth Phone + Sailing Clicker + Powerbook is just ubercool.
Or in other words: "It really whips the llama's ass"
Here's a good link for people who want to find out more about any unknown terms.
.. I can finally figure out what this Linux thing is.
Thanks ever so much

IANAM but I'm sure this is a better source of truck pr0n.
Do it better in 1 word.
iPod.
it requires a huge kernel on each machine...
.. except having to whip out the electron microscope to read a header file can sometimes be a pain.
Well MAYBE you should be running OSX. It has a microkernel you know. MUCH smaller.
I like it
You'll enjoy it, but it's not great for any relationships you're in
.. I remember how I met my gf like it was only yesterday.
Funny
The atmosphere, the excitement, the nervousness. The way she was holding that BFG.
So all of them, you're saying.
