And here I thought that the "redudant, autonomous, interconnection of private networks" didn't need to be saved, much less governed. I say, let em govern what they think they can. Nobody can stop the signal.
So instead of the water survival class they make you take you have to have an hour of Shipboard defense now? I can see it now... "pull on the lever to chamber the shell, slid the bolt forward... billy? are you paying attention?.... aim and slowly squeeze the shot off and don't forget to brace for recoil.";-)
I just amazes me that what Google refer's to as "Beta" is usually leaps and bounds above what others consider "Mature". Its just a refreshing change from what we are shoveled from most other software outlets.
How is this in any way linked to Yahoo? I thought that Google was the one doing this. Methinks the poster has been into the halloween candy a little early..... and that candy corn had an "E" on it for some strange reason.
It's my belief that patent law, and most cases in general don't come with a high enough penalty. I think that if someone wants to sue another. That, whatever they are seeking in damages would be applied back to them if they lose. Sort of like a wager. So if you want to sue for 50 million in damages for something... you better be sure you'll win or you get the 50 million dollar bill. This would greatly reduce the number of frivolus law suits that make it into the courtroom that block the "fair and speedy" trial we are promised. Obviously Criminal law would work differently. I have to say that I am really getting tired of the companies with the money making strategy of "sue everyone" to make the quarter. Go build something for a change. Sheesh./end slashdot opinion
So why haven't they put that tether experiment on the ISS that the shuttle ran a number of years ago. Basically it was able to turn orbital motion into electricity or electicity to motion. Next trip take them up a tether and a bunch of solar cell and Fagetaboutit.
Please sir may I have some more? I am really getting sick of these format wars every couple of years. What really needs to happen is for nobody to get any money out of these format incriments. No royalties, no advertising money, nothing. THEN maybe they can all agree on a single low cost high compression format that can be universally accepted.
This would work because everyone would sell more, movies, games, data discs, whatever. I'm tired of big electronics bickering amongst themselves, and the only ones being left out are the consumers. I say let the cream rise to the top and pick that format. When money concerns get involved with engineering concerns is when things get futzzed up.
I'd still like to see a google OS, with enhanced searches. Since we are dreaming and all... I also want it running their Algorithms, a Unix shell, and Mac design points and GUI.
Oh... and also buy up all the shares in microsoft, then pick the meat off their bones and throw away the carcass.
If I were Jobs, I would call their bluff. I would find the most offending label and preempt them. I'd cut them off completely. As a double entente I would also call for all Ipod users to boycott any music from said label for the span of one month. Typically in history, the only thing that gets results in any battle is when you hit them in the pocket book. Similar tactics helped in the Cold War, the Civil Rights movement, and the ERA. Its all words and gesturing usually, but the real results come from the almighty dollar and its influence.
OK.. usually I stay out of this sort of discussion.. but this is just idiocy. Firstly... the title is sensationalistic and just wrong. They are talking about DNS not routing.. They are mutually exclusive. The US doesn't control ROUTING. The packets will still get to wherever they need to go even if we turned off the servers and went home. Now I know many systems are dependent on the root servers, but it doesn't have to be that way.. the root server lookup list can be modified by your ISP and you would be none the wiser. This is why the Internet is a "Distributed" infrustucture.
And to speak to the political nature.... It the old grizzled engineers that have built and maintained these servers for over 30 years. The internet wouldn't be here if not for them. You wouldn't be reading this if not for them. I'm sorry it has to be this way... but they all live in the US for the most part. And if you don't want to see it all fall apart, you might just want to leave the system be. I will echo an earlier post... If its not broke... don't fix it.
"Mysterious Stars Surround Andromeda's Black Hole"
Thats just rude to refer to Kevin Sorbo's career that way. Sure I know he sucks in stars that are never heard from again, but thats no cause to put the man down.
The ISP idea is nice, but I think the real direction google should be taking is to release an Operating System, and turn the typical windows interface on its ear. We have been fed command line and windowing user interfaces already. What we need is the next great UI. Its my belief that google could pioneer the next "search" based interface, possibly with some good voice recognition. Something like "google suggest" driven by voice. The technology is here. The CPU horsepower is here. Lets see google come up with some great new algorithms and finally sink Bill's boat.

Thats no star.... thats a death moon.... er space station......no... maybe it it's a death star..... yeah thats it a death star.

Obviously the Mod's missed the subtle humor there. but I posted instead of modding this thread.
yeah yeah... sorry I should RTFM I guess... but then it just wouldn't be /. would it.

Thaaank you comeagain. is the same in any language.
And the only thing we get a clear image of is a blocky looking dude flicking us off as hard as he possibly can.

Just my dreams of a perfect world.
It was if millions of alcoholics called out in unison and were suddenly happy.
This is just my opinion.
