I built a house a few years ago and searched Ask Slashdot for Ideas. Here is what I did:
* Two bundles of banana cable to every room back to a central location. Each bundle contained 2 x Cat5e + 2x RG6QS * One bundle of banana cable over the jacuzzi tub for a small TV. * Run an ethernet jack behind appliances. (fridge, stove, washer / dryer, and water heater) * Electrical outlets in the eves of the house. Christmas lights are a breeze to put up and take down * In the great room behind where I was mounting the TV I also ran in-wall rated HDMI 1.4a back to the central closet. * I picked a room that in the future would be a media/theater room and ran power + HDMI to the ceiling and speaker wires in the walls. * I never called $phone_company to install lines. The only lines to the street are power, water, and cable (for internet)
The last one has caused some problems as every service provider says your house is unserviceable since it is not listed in "the database".
You forget that there are people who think that they are instructed by their god to kill those who are not like them. I seem to remember that there was a time in this country that there was a group of people who thought that people who were 'different' were 'lesser'. Rightfully, we put an end to that. Do you think that all people deserve to be treated as equals, or should those oppressed in Iraq be treated the way we used to treat Indians, Blacks and women in this country? Should they be the European Jews of the 30's? Do we not have a responsibility to the world to ensure people are treated equitably?
Gee, that sounds like the same thinking that started the Crusades. I agree everyone should be treated equally, in the USA; however I, and we as a country, have no right whatsoever to judge the lives and actions of a different society.
I have a Sharp Zaurus sl-5500 running the OpenZaurus firmware and the only real issue I have is finding sync software. When I first got the PDA I installed Multi-Sync and had no problems syncing with Ximian Evolution. However, it seems Multi-sync has disappeared.
As for syncing to Windows/Outlook(TM) I believe the Qtopia desktop software will sync with the OpenZaurus firmware. You should be able to easily find the hardware on eBay...
Granted I am not a Mac user but at least I know about NeoOffice and that is why the (butt ugly IMHO) advertisment should be for OpenOffice and NeoOffice
"Such commitment on open source-development could be seen as a good step, and may show the way to other companies."
Me thinks they are trying to keep up, or compete, with Nokia's 770 Web Tablet. Next OS version (Q2 2006 release) will include VoIP capabilities. And Nokia has already setup a development community here: http://www.maemo.org/
I will keep that in mind, Vonage is not an option here as they do not offer numbers in the 865 area code and according to their website will not transfer my number.
I live in Knoxville, TN and yes, Bellsouth is still the only main telco. There is one smaller telco that I know of, but They cannot compete with Bellsouth on price/options, and they are only available on the west side of the city. For example, at my last job, my boss though three-way calling was cool, it was not a feature at the time. Looks like I will be moving to Packet8 a little sooner than I thought.
A white hat would have 1. reported the vulnerability, 2. prepared a Proof-of-concept to send to them, and then 3.(optionally)threatened to release the P-o-C unless action was taken to remove the vulnerability in a timely manner.
If you would RTFA you would find that the vulnerability *WAS* reported 4 months ago and CISCO wants to fix it *NEXT YEAR*...
I know you may be joking, but I will second this. My boss asked for the same thing, they used it once when I finished setting everything up to see how it worked and then one other time. I am routinely asked how "cool" it would be if we had cameras so we could talk to and see the other location managers and show them stuff; This normally results in a dirty look from me and then an "Oh, yeah. We already have that don't we?" from my boss.
All I did was add cameras and setup netmeeting on two existing computers. We already had the T-1 and the boss' wanted to use the speakerphone. Keep It Simple...
I have tried this, and found it seriously lacking. Windows was not designed for this sort of thing, and software, in general, does not know how to handle it. I have found that it is unstable, and it is impossible to move windows from one desktop to another.
I currently use Enhanced Vitual Desktops available from on Windows2000 SP4 and have had no problems moving windows between desktops. I have had explorer.exe crash and all the tray icons disappear and EVD is still running along fine, switching desktops brings the tray icon back. I have switched terminal windows, putty sessions, Outlook, Firefox, Thunderbird, and Sunbird windows without issues.
Unfortunatley we do!:(. When I asked why (because the system was purchased in 1998!), some story about the CEO's weakness for female salespeople came up.
Do me a favor and next time the power goes out plug a phone that does not get power from an outlet into the phone jack... you hear that dial tone...
Hmm.. where I live when the power goes out I get either a loud buzzing or no dial tone and my phone only has two cords on it, one from the phone base to the phone wall outlet and one from the phone base to the handset. So, I guess BellSouth needs to fix their phone lines in Tennessee?? ( <-- smart-ass comment, my father is going to retire from Bellsouth in the next few years.) The phone starts working 30 to 60 minutes after the power comes back on; If not I call Bellsouth from my cell phone and report the problem and the phone starts working about 10 minutes after I hang up.
Also my computer works fine when the power goes out... I have a server grade APC battery backup. (Yes, I know not everyone has a battery backup at home.)
This is really the only reason I have not swicthed to VOIP (internet downtime), But since my wife has recently started asking what Vonage and VOIP is it may be time to switch.
I am glad I am not the only one with this problem. Where ever I go I always choose a seat with my back to a wall and where I can see most of the room and the door. I cannot stand people coming up behind me muchless looking over my shoulder.
I run an Exchnage2000 enviroment and I cannot get Evolution with the exchange connector to work. Everytime I click an exchange folder I get a 3 - second wait for the folder contents to refresh, sometimes I get an error and no folder contents until I restart Evolution, and sometimes Evolution just crashes or locks up.
What would really be nice would be a Windows app, possibly closed source, that would talk to Exchange and translate the protocol to a standard protocol.
I have postfix setup to call amavis as a before-queue content filter. Postfix receives the message and keeps the SMTP connection open, passes the message to amavis which scans the message with ClamAv and SpamAssassin. If the message is spam postfix returns a '550: Message content rejected: looks like SPAM' and a web address that has my contact information so I can be reached if it is not really spam. The message is then quarantined and I can read or release the message when I find it in the logs the next morning. If there is a virus detected, the message is quarantined and I (the admin) get an email with the connecting mail servers IP address / and name, who the message was to, who the message was from [mostly spoofed], and which virus was found.
If the message makes it passed these two checks it is forwarded to our internal Exchange server where it gets scanned by Norton Anti-Virus and delivered to the user.

How then sir are you using a computer a teh intarwebs? I though the Amish did not believe in electricity.
Haha, that looks like my boss' desktop. I routinely get calls consisting of "I just dowloaded something and I can't find it"

Things that suck about Comcast: No static IP

Does that have anything to do with how many Corona's it takes to reach the floor?
