"IT was a spunky server, full of life and function, however the Good Lord deemed it necessary to remove this server from this world with an act of Slashdot".
Okay here's the other side of the scenario. I'm a small nobody with a decent lawyer, suing a major corporation with a team of lawyers for big time problems they have caused me (family death/injury).
I sue them and lose. Um, I couldn't possibly afford the fees nor would most small fry attempt to go against the big dogs in the future.
Ironically, this is also from PBS. I'm not quite sure what you mean by "extremely short period of time", as the article I read states: "...it was not as rapid as an explosion: the changes seems to have happened in a range of about 30 million years, and some stages took 5 to 10 million years. ".
The article sums up a good deal of what is known by the "explosion" and theories of why it occured (increased oxygen, extinction period prior to the Cambrian period). My favorite topic is that of the "genetic tool kit" formulation.
It would be fairly amazing to see IBM roll their own Distro (not AIX). I'm saying standardize a distro with a few supported packages a la UserLinux. If they're going in this direction, it would make some business sense to say, here is a distro from which we know everything about these packages.
Ah. Printing setup. From that perspective, I say there is still a lot to be done. That is definetly one feature I would really like to see improvement in. Two weeks, ago, I decided to setup an old e-machine to run as a print server, using Debian, Cups and Samba (KDE played a small roll too). Those three items are glorious when you they are working, but are the three kings of doom if you misconfigure any one of the Conf files. It would be nice to see projects working together to create easier solutions. IE, after the pain of installing the proper driver for my Laser printer, it would be nice to simply Right-Click the printer in the KDE Printing Manager and say "Share". A neat idea for a distro would be called "Inner-Office Linux". Ie, when you installed a distro, it would be expicitly setup for a few tried and true tasks. IE. You check the Printer Server button, it installs all the Samba/Kde/Cupsys items that you would need to allow your office (guest login ok) print server to function. Even though I stuck to the guns in setting up the linux print server and delving into the world of Linux printing, I doubt many other's would even bother.
So I guess we always have to be pessimistic about what a man's angle is for donating to charity?
What if, per chance, he IS actually donating the money out of the goodness of his being? Nah, that angle could never be convered, this is Slashdot. Nerds, News, and pessimism.
Unfortunately, there is always a way out. That is why they have counselors and suicide hotlines. You can manipulate a person as much as you want, but that person still has freedom of choice and avenues to turn to, even though at times they may not feel like it. If you, as a concerned friend or family member know of someone that is in trouble and let him take his own life without action, that is a different matter. It probably will not until all the major players allow for their clients to talk to other providers. Average computer user's will still use whatever client is installed on their desktop (AOL/MSN).
Did you read the article? How was that marked as "Insightful"? The article is about what makes the tech industry Great. Innovation. The article focused around people that had problems or issues with current technologies, and decided to invent something to better their lives (okay, so the Atari Gameboy, probably wasted more time). I think rather than externalize their actions, they bring a whimsical nature to technology that is often times unnapproachable by other people. Cmon, the computer inside of a beer case? Why not? How is that going to harm anything?
If we all accepted the norm and did things only as we've been told, the state of technology will never change. What about if some "search and rescue" company sees the roomba with the webcam and says: "Eureka! A way to make a cheaper disaster search vehicle".
You can have your high-brow ways. I am going to continue to innovate and play around with stuff ina "juvenile" way.
Then get out there and code! If you have the vision of how things work, put a project together and start changing the world. In fact, I challenge most of the readers on Slashdot to do the same. Article after article, "Oh the world is falling". "Big brother is here". Get out there and frickin fix it then!
Slashdot has become the spot of arm-chair politics No one else that matters in the polictical world seems to be paying much attention to Slashdot, or their reader's concerns. Gasp. Maybe its up to the readers to actually do something on their own Write to your local rep, run for office, go to rallies, start talking with your friends. Anyone can point out past mistakes, but it takes real guts to stand up and try to prevent new ones.
I keep wondering that myself. (Any PHBs out there care to comment?) My wife's company is in a similar situation. At one point, they hired anyone that could spell the word "code" as a software engineer. This was for some major software ramp-up. Couple of years later, the enterprise-wide project is severely limping along. They're staff is filled with incompetent developers who basically could get away with filleting a fish on their desk, and only receive a slap on the wrist. We still cannot figure out at exactly what point does the company decide to fire an individual. One person, even has admitted to being a constant "Stretcher of truth"! My wife has been asked to "Babysit" some of the developers! Still nothing. Is it labor laws? Fear of being sued?
I think that's a great idea! What could be done, is to create a few "modules" ala Morphix, and pack some of these extensions into a single package. The "Power users", could contain the DOM explorer, toolbar extender, etc.
write an Obituary for this guy's webserver.

Just my $0.02....
(We haven't heard this in a while..)
In Soviet Russia, the computer ranks you!
And then we begin to fear other's that are NOT like us and have different cultures? Hmmmmmmmmm...Where is that happening?

But no hookers? Boring.
Hmmmm...
a.) Intel Investors
b.) Previous open demo by AMD with the same technology.
Rather ironically, I was reading this quote when I received the following link in an email: http://www.bushflash.com/nuke.html
Nuclear science anyone? But like you just said, people will just vote for his morals.

If I were to standardize my entire shop, would solaris run on all of my older machines (Pentium III/II)? Real question, not a flame.
And THEN, convert every single web site out there that runs ASP.NET and/or exclusively fro the IE browser.
(Don't get me wrong, I and all my family run Firefox, and I've already converted two in my workplace)

Desktop support? (On her brand new Commodore 64 desktop?)
AND, I get get his money too!

I've got my water right here!
Or supporting our families and paying taxes? Just my $0.02

He knew his parents, that he was obviously living with at the time.
I'd kill people to get a 512k ADSL line,
OB, Family Guys episode:
What would you do for a Klondike Bar?
Would you kill a man?
